Will you buy one of these when/if they actually come out?
« on: April 22, 2014, 10:34:25 AM »
American made in Louisiana, 2 seater (inline), a/c standard, 3cyl engine that achieves 84mpg, 5 star (car) crash ratings (It is technically classified a motorcycle), and only costs $6800! Supposed to hit the market in 2015. I am very skeptical about it as it seems to good to be true. But if it does actually do what it claims and still costs under $7000 new I will buy one. I currently drive a 2003 Yukon XL (suburban) daily and it is usually just me in the truck commuting to work and school. Only on the weekends is the truck actually used as intended as a family hauler. I spend over $100 just to fill the tank and that lasts me a little over a week. The Elio is ugly but I'm all about cheap and efficient transportation. I don't see how it can only cost $6800 when a can-am spyder motorcycle is over $20k new. This car/motorcycle will destroy the hybrid/compact car market over night.

That reminds me of one of my favorite top gear episodes: http://www.topgear.com/uk/videos/clarkson-tips-over-reliant-robin

But back on topic.... Would you buy one?

I think it would be fun to zip through traffic with, if it had a few more horses under the hood.  0 - 60 in 10 seconds was probably measured on level ground, most on-ramps in my area are uphill for some god forsaken reason.  Making that tiny trunk accessible from the outside would be nice as well.

How about a velomobile? The price range is starts from a few thousands and there aren't any fuel costs.

I don't believe the safety ratings,  looks too fragile to share the road with rest of average dinosaurs vehicles; wouldn't make it here in Canada on snow and ice.
The Volkswagen vehicles using turbo diesel  blue motion technology on European market are getting close to 80 mpg, and they are same size/weight  like here;  almost  twice better fuel economy than the motors used in North America built in Mexico;
I don't know why after 4-5 years Blue motion technology  doesn't get on our market; check this 2 links the fuel economy for VW Golf, Jetta, Passat in UK vs USA/Canada;
Example; Vw Golf TDI in EU is rated 88.3mpg vs----  42 mpg Canada /USA;

Between driving in Europe and in America there is a wide difference.  Roads, distance of travel etc.

A good number of States in the US are larger then countries in Europe.  We have the majority of super highways in the world.

Europe has a great deal of single lane highways or lanes as they are called especially in the country.  Even our country roads

are generally paved with two lanes.  Apples to Oranges in driving experiences.

They prefer cars with better mileage for good reason.  Their cost of fuel.  They also prefer cars that are sized similar to the  ones

we see at the circus here in America that have 20 Clowns getting out of it in the Center Ring.

I tested my Yukon today with the built in timer on the dash and it also does 0-60 in 10 seconds so I don't think the acceleration will be an issue.

I don't believe the safety ratings,  looks too fragile to share the road with rest of average dinosaurs vehicles;

It has a roll cage similar to a race car under the body panels plus airbags to protect the driver. They say the light weight of the vehicle will help with impacts because the vehicle will be easier to move to bleed energy from an impact vs a heavier more stationary object.

I don't think so.

Who would buy a $35k volt or prius  when you can buy this for less than $7000 and get better mileage out of the vehicle? Think of new drivers also. Instead of people spending 15K+ on a corolla, sentra, civic, etc. You can get one of these for half the price.

I am still very skeptical as to how they can really build and deliver these vehicles for the price they are advertising. Especially when a standard motorcycle without any bells and whistles costs more. If they do everything they claim and really are under $7000 brand new I will go buy one the day I see it on a lot. It really is a no brainer for commuting. I'll leave the gas hog family hauler at home during the week until it's needed.

They will more than likely not pass emissions set by the EPA. That is why we don't have a lot of the VWag products that you see over seas.
