I found out last night that .p <gameid> still works for communication across countries....so it is still possible to talk to others....just can't have a group hug moment.

I think thats the one that needs work. They should set it up much like the "join" window. The players getting the private message has to accept the massage.  Or can ignore it and let the haters hit a stone wall. 200 is tuned by the players and they should know what they "could" be getting into, but PMs from someone you dont want to talk to still show up and that first message could be filled with all kinds of hate.

I think HTC should have more MODs and they should be more strict on what is allowed and what isnt. A couple months of the biggest mouths losing privileges may slow them down some.

“The massage?”

“Yes, the massage.”

“Oh!  You mean the message?”

“That’s what I have been saying you idiot I am here for the massage!”

HiTech posted a comment about AH (from Steam?)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is a good simulation but there are a low number of players and many of them have dreadful attitudes towards other players. For example there is a high level of superficial charm but after a while the real personalities start to come through and then you realise there is something very wrong with many of these people and you are probably dealing with an unusually high proportion of psychopaths. There are no new players and when they do get new players, they tend to leave very quickly because of the dreadful social interactions. When these problems are raised in the community they are denied and burried. The community argues that their community is friendly and supportive: let me make this very clear, they are friendly and supportive of each other but not outsiders. Having said all that, there are some decent human beings in the game but they generally let the psychopaths ruin it for the nice people, probably because they do not want to be attacked like the other victims. So if you can handle personality disorders and you like to fly a very well built air combat simulation then go for it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I agree. Not that new players leave because of the "dreadful social interactions" but because of the steep learning curve, with the social interactions a minor supporting player.
But I do agree that there is a significant # of long term players who seem to find validation in AH by punishing/belittling enemies they dominate, and of course newbs would find that very off-putting.
The solution to me is simple, and if I am reading HT right (I like to theorize on limited data) the disabling of 200 was a shot across the bow to the small but vocal minority that love the venue merely in order to beat their chests when victorious.

Imo "shots across the bow" work short term, but actual damage to the hull is necessary long term.

My solution? Mute the players from 200 who are regular toxic contributors to it (and apologies, OP, but you are one of them, and there really aren't that many) but leave it open for everyone else. Give the toxic people an opportunity or two to come back and behave themselves, but ban them for an entire tour if they just don't get the memo. And ban them forever if toxic 200 is their raison d'etre. There is a definite element of truth to what the guy HT quoted posted. But it can be contained with less draconian measures.

A lot of people use PM so as not to burden the rest of the arena with disagreeing with another player.

And some use PM to try to bully/intimidate other players on a more personal level.

(SNIP) what we suggest and what actually happens are 2 different things(SNIP)
(SNIP) It would be nice to have a forum where input and suggestions / polls could be used to help make the game and community better as a whole even as a starting point.

What you really mean is what you suggest and what you really want are usually 2 different things.

We have an area on the boards called "Wish List" for suggestions. The game also has a running poll that covers everything possible. It is called subscriptions.

Um Guys I got two Toxic PM's from the above player for killing his perked bombers in my perked fighter yesterday.  Just any FYI to add flavor to this conversation.  The offenders here are just being jerks.  They can paint it as unfair circumstances, or playful ribbing, or some other smack talk, but the fact is it's toxic.  I have a fairly thick skin and for year's have always just taken a screen shot added the pic of toxic/rage PM's to the Pigs Wall of Shame Rage PM picture gallery on our private Facebook page.  Now I am going to report every single toxic PM.  Why?  Because what if this jerk was firing this off to a new guy or a teen?  That's why.  I do not want to see people run off by these psycho personalities any longer.  I will make Hitech aware each time.  So I encourage you each time you feel that I have given you good customer service and you feel the need to make a horrible comment via PM to do so.  It will be shared. :aok

Not the first time in gaming history, or Aces High history where developers were so disconnected from their community that they made a mistake in a decision on the game.

I'm probably considered one of the most toxic players on 200 and I never went after a "noob" to berate them...where's the skill in that?

The people "picking on noobs" are doing it silently via chat so they keep feeding them easy kills...most of the top 50 in fighter score are the ones you need to blame for "picking on noobs".

Just look at their score and see, if they have killed 1 single person more than 5-10 times a tour, you can assume they were vulching them or damn near.

The only way to stop people from doing that would be change the scoring system so they don't get as rewarded for killing the same person in a sortie.

Agreed.

Whether you think it's playful or that people should have thicker skins, the fact is that smack talk runs people out of an arena.  We saw this happen in the AvA some years ago.  It only takes one or two such personalities to have the effect.  Calling people ack-runners, HO-tards, pickers, gangers and so on produces resentment, and people leave.

It really is not terribly difficult to be pleasant and sportsman-like.
