Joe Walsh & Barnstorm was the very first concert I saw, an easily impressed 15yr old (75)

Back then, when you came in they were still setting up the show. That exact show is what inspired me to want in the biz. Never even dreamed I’d go as far as I did. Never actually thought I’d ever get in. I was living in Mayberry, bailing hay on a produce farm, then worked home construction through high skewl. Then 80s recession hit, wasn’t working, was in the right place at the right time.

But ya, that concert did it for me.

My dad and his wife were murdered by a maniac driving while high on drugs a few months back.

It is interesting how music can take us back places.

My dad and his wife were murdered by a maniac driving while high on drugs a few months back. I saw all the Eagle's talk in this thread today and I was immediately reminded of his favorite song by Eagles and James Gang member Joe Walsh. I dialed it up on Spotify to give it a listen for old times sake as my dad would hit it up on the Juke Box while we played pool once a week at our local pool hall during my high school years. Wow, it really hit hard and drew a tear listening to it initially but once reminded of the fun we had while playing pool to it and some other old tunes we liked, I added it to a playlist I made consisting of his songs. It's quite a range as he liked surfing music, Johnny Cash, the Stones, Yardbirds, Blind Faith and others but this song was the top of his list. I'll never forget him using his cue stick as a microphone, guitar, sword or bayonet as we listened to these tunes emanating from the jukebox at that pool hall that's no longer.

I don’t know how I missed this. That’s a life changing sad experience. Sorry you have to live that loss.

I understand looking back. I’ve lost so many, that each one types of movies or music, places. All triggers to us now. Personally I’ve put those mutual preferences to sleep, too many people, too many triggers. Just give them merit once in a great while. I’m pretty much down to documentaries and rock.

You’re welcome to vent on me any time.

Best advice I have, the waves will get smaller in time. Give time, time to work.

I was part of the Black Sabbath return show in Chicago. Which felt very odd. Its always a surreal feeling to work with people I’ve idolized in my younger years. I’m over the star-struck POV. But still, even to my last day, I get assigned or hired and during the show on stage with them I will drift into these thoughts. How the hell did Opie from Mayberry even get to there. In theory, I should not be. People just kept calling.

Most of my stories aren’t meant to be brags, its still bewilderment how I even got there. I never really meant to fit into the whole roadie “I’m with the band” persona. When I’m hidden on stage with the band I become part of the band more than anyone on any crew. I’m the only one dealing directly with the band.  It’s my stage as much as its the band’s stage. Basically I’m steering the aircraft carrier and do my best to inspire adrenaline. When you work with someone often, ya become a trusted friend. They know when they see me nothing is going south. To be trusted by someone you idolized, its strange. I’m the only one pulled into the prayer circle before we launch. Meeting Ringo Starr was epic, even to me. That seriously has a family feeling that they put so much faith in Opie.

That drivel said, 450 high profile artist, 4000 concerts in 45 yrs,… I have barely scratched the surface of who I really wanted to work for.

I’ve done a lot of beginnings and endings of bands.

Pink Floyd always topped my list. Never got to work a true PF show. But worked seoarately with Waters and Gilmour’s solo shows.

Packing up Gilmour show I was packing his personal gear in an original Pink Floyd case he carried since day one. It was epic for me, as that was as close as I got. Closed that old wooden black case, with trigonal PF label. Petted it like a dog, and kissed the top. Where that case has been tells its own story just looking at it. That case symbolized where I was in the game, not any one person.

My friends and co-workers say I made it to top shelf, I say I almost made it.

Walking out of my last venue, I could hear the end of Clapton’s Lala piano part, like the end of Casino. It was like putting your old dog to sleep. I came out the end of the grinder, still both feet in Opie, I just have a lot of campfire stories. Now, I’m just a shmuck, and proud of that. My name in the industry will fade like everyone else.

AH replaces that adrenaline I’ll miss.
Observing these guys run events/scenarios reminds me of how a crew can make stars align to creat a memory. It’s the same. Its really all about the players/audience. Its not easily replaced. Yall don’t understand, you really do it how its meant to be done. Its exactly like putting on a concert. Creating a memory is very powerful. Be proud, you’re doing it right. Skins, terrains, you’re all a part of a production. I’d put you on my crew any day.

I hope HT realizes, despite the some negative input, not allow that to over-shadow he/they did it right. Its ok to have a reunion tour. This would rank high on my list of the best reunion tour. As many memories made here as many high profile bands. Thats probably what drives me. To see that would be like the first sound of the crowd when the band is launched. The hair on your arm will stand up.

Hmmm,  not bad songs, but for my ancient taste, the mix could be better.

Don’t get offended, I’m old skewl.

We call this a flat-line mix, no real thought put into it, kinda why I dropped off. Flat-line mixes started in late 90s and got more common and normalized. There are no dynamics. Everything is at the same level, all meters are at 0,  the vocals get buried, not out front. If that is what people are now used to then its ok for them.  But really, in this stuff my mix is locked after first song. Its boring for me as I’m doing nothing creative.

Many times I listen to the mix, so sound engineers are listening differently. Doesn’t mean anything to fans.

When I did a Rammstein and Megadeath show, I simply put all monitor outputs way up, all same level, no real mix for players to take cues. They loved it. I was bored. I came up with the term testosterone over-load.

In the 80s-early 90s these clowns dressed like females (vomit) now its the opposite, look and act as badass as possible, the biker wannabe look.

Before ya get upset, my dad said the same thing about my music, he was a big band era fan of the 40s-50s. So, just words from an old guy.  The songs are O K, to me he mixes blow. Pro-tools had a lot to do with it, the guy at home has little experience on creative mixing, nor great vocal effects. So. I’m just a grumpy old man. As an engineer the mixes make me crazy.

Even if we go back to Ozzy, Whitesnake, Queensryche, The Cult, Guns & Roses, there was still creative mixing and dynamics.  Those songs will last forever, not sure the life span of the newer metal, time has not passed much.

Again, we listen different, all music is personal preference, my words should mean nothing. I appreciate your contributions.

On the flip-side, it provides work for the less experienced engineers. Ya don’t have to know much to meter and fader everything at 0.

Ozzy isn’t the only one retiring, why my reply above drifted, all us engineers of the era are retiring with him.  We had our time, our time is over. Our entire era is retiring. Take it and have fun running with it. If its fun you should do that. Its your world now. <S>

This dweeb makes me crazy. 200+ plug-ins is absurd. Totally over-processing the signals, compressing everything just to add it back in at the end. He’s not mixing, hus over use of plug-ins is mixing. The end result, a live concert no longer has live dynamics.

Ya know how many FX and plug-ins on bugger bands than Jason will ever be? Very little to none, except on vocals. Common 5-10 plug-ins on digital mixers. Maybe a rack of 6-16 items on analog consoles. And it sounded better live. The expensive instruments of the band no longer sound as they were designed to sound. With this guy they waisted their money.

I do use 3 stage multi compression, if available. More so for talking heads, they must sound like TV.
