I just rolled my eyes when I saw that.

For some really rare animal I can see it, but a dog?  That's just a joke.

ridiculous imo.

I like the fact they rescued it, it is a living creature after all.. but damn, they mounted an entire operation just for it. whatever happened to sending a single chopper to pick it up?

Didn't come outta *my* pocket, nor yours... I think it's a nifty story. Who cares how stupid it is... A buncha people spent 50 grand to save a dog. That's the kinda kooky stuff that makes life interesting.

How can we justify the extent of our moral convictions based upon how much money it costs us? That animal DESERVED to be saved after spending 19 days adrift with nothing to eat but that dead Indonesian crewman, which is poetic justice since the Indonesians don't keep dogs for pets, but rather for fresh meat.
That Captain should be imprisoned for abandoning that poor dog.

Elfenwolf How many animals are now being put to sleep because some retard decided to waste their budget on one dog?

The one that should be put in jail is the person who authorized the rescue.

guys stop flipping out

Think of it as a training exercise.  It is like a firefighter getting a cat out of a tree (which also costs heaps of cash, though not 50K)

If these guys were to rescue a family and dog off a civilian craft that had a pet on it do you think that they would say "no the dog cant come?"

If you ask me, they are just learning how to deal with new situations.

Mighty1, let me tell you the story of the little girl on the beach. Once a little girl was walking on a beach where thousands of starfish had washed ashore and were dying.

The little girl began throwing the starfish back into the surf in an effort to save them.

An old man, upon observing her efforts, said "It's no use, little girl. There's too many of them, you'll naver make a difference."

"Oh yeah?" said the little girl, throwing another starfish back into the surf. "I made a difference for THAT one."

So you see, Mighty1, we at PETA make a difference one animal at a time. And most people would agree with my compassion, too. In fact I'd wager that if a news copter showed footage of a dog abandoned at sea on a boat and a human abandoned at sea on a DIFFERENT boat that the viewers of the news show would donate more money to save the dog than they would to save the human.

Your analogy does not apply here because we are not talking about just manual labor we are talking about using limited funds to help one animal instead of using those same funds to help many.

I can feel compasion for an animal but to put the needs of a few over the needs of the many is stupid.

I also don't agree with your comment that most people would rather save an animal over a human.

I always suspected Peta was full of diddlying morons so thanks for proving me right.
