Training Newbies
« on: July 17, 2002, 12:27:44 PM »
OK, Last night I clicked on the training button for the first time to see how this new training system works.  Everything seemed to be working ok, and I understand how the interface works, but has anyone had any luck actually talking to these newbies?  I spent about a half an hour trying to talk to 2 or 3 of the ones online last night, and who knows, maybe I was annoying them to death!  I can't tell.  There are a couple of things that might be happening:

1.  The newbie is so new that he/she doesn't even know how to tune the radio to respond.

2.  The newbie is so distracted by flying or configuring his setup that he/she is ignoring requests to provide help.

3.  The newbie already has a trainer that they are comfortable with.

4.  The newbie doesn't speak English.

5.  Maybe I just need a better pickup line.  Is "Hey so-and-so, let me know if you would like some help" too intrusive?

If anyone has had some success training newbies, I would like to have some advise from you on what it takes to be successful.

Try "Is that a Machinegun sticking out of your wing, or are you just happy to see me?". :D

LOL, tell me about it!  After the demise of the volunteer staff in AW, we formed an independent group, CAST - Community Action & Service Team.  As a member of that group, I agreed to spend two hours one night a week touring the training arenas there to help newbies - I never did figure out the best way of communicating!    I thought perhaps they didn't know how, and would give instructions, but still...... silence...... maybe they just didn't want any help, but if that was they case they could have said so.... Perhaps there was a knack, but I never discovered it during the short time I tried....  :p

Same here, got it actually to work though was helping a guy, but he decided to switch teams and he musta been using team channel to talk back, and Im like where'd he go? Oh well. Also when I tried to get him on my help list I clicked his name and then click add, it added some other guy from the top. Now I got 6 guys on my list and I have never seen any of them again.

That is right Pooh21, I didn't think much about it, but it is impossible to actually select the newbies you want in your pool.  The system doesn't add the newbie that you indicate.  I was trying to find a newbie that had not already had someone try to help them, and when I pressed add, someone that had already had three trainers popped onto my list.  Very strange.

Thanks for the history Flossy.  I hope contacting a newbie is not simply a function of the number of attempts you make.  Wouldn't it be nice to have a popup window on the newbies side that automatically tuned their radio for them if they accepted the help that is offered to them?

hanging out in the MA is best place to pickup newbys, they will say things like 'hey , mister , can i ride in your air plane?" and "how do i start the engine?" and "how do you make the tank move?"and "what is JABO?"

Talking to newbies is ART, plus it helps to have the patience of job and a very thick hide.

Eventually either you figure it out or you quit trying. Remember, no one wins em all.

I'm sure that would help a lot!  :)  Must admit, I have not tried this new system yet, though I do try to answer any newby's questions I see being asked in the MA anyway.  The last time I spent any amount of time with a newby was quite a few months ago and I received a Profanity warning!  I never did find out what I was supposed to have said - I think I must have mistyped SHIFT or something....  Since then, I have become involved with the CM team, anyway.  ;)

tonight I thought i'd help some noobs.

Been watching this guy try to take off for ages so I tuned my radio to him on private and typed  'do you want assistance'  no reply. ok maybe text is scrolling past a bit fast and he doesn't know what the key is to expand the message window so I typed 'do you want assistance'   again still no reply.

Hmm i though, he knows how to get in a plane so insted I typed
'get in plane and fire your guns, if you want assistance' and sure enough out he come blazing away :D

Ok I we have contact !
I now instruct him how to type a message and sure enough up comes a little help plea 'How do I take off?'

Now I make my move and tune my Vox to him as well.
ok I now know  have his attention so why does he then type  Frogman how do I take off? and start to ignore me?

He then get in a tank and the message buffer comes alive with 'how do I start my tank' over and over

But being patient I now up a tank and move it so i'm in front of him, Surely he can see me? and I start to type/speak to him instructions on the art of tank driving.

But he keep typing 'how do i move my tank' over and over.

so i give up, I tried as length but he wore me down.

By now a load of people are replying in the text buffer, so he couldn't miss the instructions and off he goes driving around the base.

He's in a LVT and he finds the trigger, and a plane takes off near him so being a noob , he opens fire, the pilot of the plane (shall remain nameless) then decides after getting up to help the said noob by diving on him, and the poor noob killshooters himself LOL

I almost wet myself.  and I was able to calm myself from my frenzy of frustration, thank you nameless pilot you cheered me up :D

I would also like to mention that DJ111 and Zeroping both deserve a medal for the patience they showed trying to help a noob get green text, they fought valiantly for a good 20mins untell they overcame the task at hand. WTG :)

God its hard work, but i'll try again :)

Blank, the noob you're referring to seemed to have an IQ of a rock.  Being one of those people who asks a question, gets the same response a half a dozen times, and asks again.

There's nothing that can be done to help those people=/

HELP A N00B!
« Reply #13 on: July 22, 2002, 06:08:06 PM »
ok, I think I can explain some of this, because I am a n00b!
And I desperately need help
I hit the option to get a trainer.  I waited for a couple minutes, and didn't see anything in the chat window.  I wanted to talk and ask quesitons, but I couldn't figure out how.  I got so engrossed in trying to find the talk key that I wasn't even paying attention to the chaat window any more.  So I just took off, flew around, strafed a pillbox-sort of thing, and landed.

BUT I STILL NEED HELP!
I don't know how to change planes, or anything else.  I think if you could just expain to me how to talk to other people, I could do ok!

I have worked the system successfully, my only niggle:

The newbies have a hard time with the interface.  Figuring out how to use the radio, then figuring out how to use the map (and how to change sides), is hard to describe.
I have had to change sides in order to cater to the newbies I wanted to help, rather than tell them to change to rook.  I am now a bish, because they have the newbies.  My heart is with the rooks though.

I found the training interface to be simple, and it works just like the webpage says it does (which is a little different than how Ronni explained things in the announcement some time ago).  In any case, I would ask for a more user friendly interface first, when it comes to training and expanding the customer base.
