You guys need to promote it. From viewing the other posts, that is very clear. I never know when its being held either. Knowing who won and who was in attendance at a KOTH is great information for those that could not make it.
There was always a large discussion of KOTH the week of the event in AW. I had always sent out a "Results" email after each event, and then one week prior to the next KOTH, I would always send out a "Reminder" email. Always keep in mind that people love to see their name in writing; what matches they won, most improved perfomance, close-but-no-cigar flying, funny moments, etc.
Also, our webpage on
http://www.327th.com was always up to date with the latest winner. People knew when it was going to be held and if interested, wanted to attend. Of course in AW this was mostly within the FR crowd.
When I got CH Products to sponsor the KOTH in AW, it was a great time for us. Not because there were prizes, but everyone knew this had now become bigger than ever. If you won a KOTH, or even just a match, people at CH and outside of AW were hearing about this as well. IT WAS ALWAYS ABOUT THE BRAGGING RIGHTS. That is why I tried to win it ... nothing more.
On that note, I see your concerns with winging and the desire to elliminate everyone's handles during the matches. Fortunately for the KOTH we had in AW, winging was little to no problem for us. Sure it happened, but when it did, everyone came down on them ... and hard! The ruling body for each event was the KOTHers themselves. But the benefits from knowing the guy (or gal) you are about to engage with, especially when it gets down to the last 6 or so players, is the ultimate thrill and challenge. To know whether this player has two wins already and if they shoot you down its all over ... it puts your heart in your throat!
Yes, I hosted the events, and I guess when it came down to it, I probably had final say with a decision. But overwhelmingly for every occasion that a decison had to be made ... it was made BY THE PLAYERS. I simply voiced that decision once everyone spoke their peace. I found it very distressing at the last KOTH I attended in AH, that a CM made the decisions based on "I'm a CM and so my call stands".
The honor of the event begins and ends with its players. The event needs to be established for them to act in the benefit of the KOTH, not personal gain. If you don't have that ... you don't have KOTH.
I'd like to see KOTH really take off in AH. And I understand that the event will inevitably be different than the AW days. But the way KOTH was run in AW is a winning formula, use it.
Good luck! (and HAVE FUN!)
