What happens if you hit the "wall"?

Now THAT is a great idea

Why not use the rumble terrain?

The wall is a near-vertical mountainside terrain. You die if you hit it.

The WW terrain is similar to the rumble terrain, except it only has one "chamber". There are about 6-8 takeoff fields evenly spaced around the circular "chamber that are about halfway up the wall.
The terrain works well with the event.

IMO, we just need more promotion of it and possibly more commitment to it by the one CM who's in charge of running it.

I think the following things would help the event immensely:

A. PROMOTION Submit a banner to HTC to run at the top of this BBS for 2-3 days before KOTH runs each month.

B. WEB PAGE We need a web page promoting this event that has a table of months with who won each month and a link to the AAR put up by the host CM. (veery simple webpage that I would be happy to write up myself) The webpage should notate which pilots have one multiple KOTH's. If they win 3 or so they get a medal, etc.

C. AFTER ACTION REPORTS by the host CM. These things add/develop interest in these events. The last snapshot AAR I wrote had about 100 views last time I checked. People like to read a detailed account of an event they played a part in. It's interesting to them to read about how theirs, or their squaddies skills made a difference in an event.

tumor.. if they have an alt cap then is a person disqulified if they exceed it?

midnight said..."As far as winging goes, I would personally like to see the same type of KOTH event for wingman pairs. Not a 2-v-2 engagement, but an entire arena full of wing pairs. Last wing pair (or single member) flying wins."

Unlike midnight I don't mind agreeing with anyone who has a good idea.... his idea is a good one.   Add his idea to a kill minimum and absolute alt cap and you might have something.

Here's a page I whipped here at work. I guess I just volunteered to be the webpage guy. Does anyone have any info on past koth winners? What plane did KOOL choose for next month? I'll work on this page some more and make it useful.
Anything to add Aub?

No Hornet, that's not what I want, but thanks for the vote of confidence. I'd just like to see there be 50+ in KOTH on a regular basis. :)

Here is some KOTH news from me...

I have been rotating terrains, trying to test them out, see which does the best. I've used the DA arena, that was too big. I didn't particularly care for the WW terrain. Last week, I used the rumble terrain. That seemed to be a better fit, being smaller (some say too small) and the air starts.

There is an alt-cap. Do I disqualify people? I will. I like to give warnings first. I'm not the type of guy that says 'Hey lazs, your .001 k over the alt-limit, good bye.' After repeated warnings, someone does not comply, they get the boot. Last week I booted one person, half-way to booting a second because they failed to read my MOTD and treated it as a 'free-for-all'. Thats not nice, so I wasn't nice after a couple warnings.

Prizes. I am currently debating prizes. AW participants may remember CH being involved and giving out so monthly prizes to winners. I may bring that to AH, if I can get a reasonable amount of people to commit. This event has been growing monthly, which is GREAT! I'd like to see the numbers at my personal level (50+ for three months) before I will consider prizes.

And now, for more about me. I have been mundo-busy in real life lately. That's no excuse, however. has the event suffered? Yes. Should I be trying harder to make the event succeed? Yes. Theres so many in the community thats been making this event work past few months, and they deserve thanks. HB, BigMax, Newman, IceMAW, Tumor, WldThing, others I can't remember right now... Have been making this event SURVIVE! When my real life calms down, I will make KOTH into what it should be.

Hey HB, email me at alieneagle69@hotmail.com

I read about the KOTH and realized that people with handles that are popularly hated will be singled out, people will wing, people will hang to the back and not stay in, people will break the alt cap.

so basically I didn't feel like going in somewhere knowing I'd come out feeling like it was a disorganized uncontrolled CF.

I'd rather have some fun with the very limited time that I can fly now...so I do TOD's only.

You guys need to promote it.  From viewing the other posts, that is very clear.  I never know when its being held either.  Knowing who won and who was in attendance at a KOTH is great information for those that could not make it.

There was always a large discussion of KOTH the week of the event in AW.  I had always sent out a "Results" email after each event, and then one week prior to the next KOTH, I would always send out a "Reminder" email.  Always keep in mind that people love to see their name in writing; what matches they won, most improved perfomance, close-but-no-cigar flying, funny moments, etc.

Also, our webpage on http://www.327th.com was always up to date with the latest winner.  People knew when it was going to be held and if interested, wanted to attend.  Of course in AW this was mostly within the FR crowd.

When I got CH Products to sponsor the KOTH in AW, it was a great time for us.  Not because there were prizes, but everyone knew this had now become bigger than ever.  If you won a KOTH, or even just a match, people at CH and outside of AW were hearing about this as well.  IT WAS ALWAYS ABOUT THE BRAGGING RIGHTS.  That is why I tried to win it ... nothing more.

On that note, I see your concerns with winging and the desire to elliminate everyone's handles during the matches.  Fortunately for the KOTH we had in AW, winging was little to no problem for us.  Sure it happened, but when it did, everyone came down on them ... and hard!  The ruling body for each event was the KOTHers themselves.  But the benefits from knowing the guy (or gal) you are about to engage with, especially when it gets down to the last 6 or so players, is the ultimate thrill and challenge.  To know whether this player has two wins already and if they shoot you down its all over ... it puts your heart in your throat!

Yes, I hosted  the events, and I guess when it came down to it, I probably had final say with a decision.  But overwhelmingly for every occasion that a decison had to be made ... it was made BY THE PLAYERS.  I simply voiced that decision once everyone spoke their peace.  I found it very distressing at the last KOTH I attended in AH, that a CM made the decisions based on "I'm a CM and so my call stands".

The honor of the event begins and ends with its players.  The event needs to be established for them to act in the benefit of the KOTH, not personal gain.  If you don't have that ... you don't have KOTH.

I'd like to see KOTH really take off in AH.  And I understand that the event will inevitably be different than the AW days.  But the way KOTH was run in AW is a winning formula, use it.

Good luck!  (and HAVE FUN!)
