I was in middle of writing a Viet Nam Campaign for OFP when the new terrain editor came out so I put that aside.
Had some real cool cut scenes.. 60’s music.. First scene is outside of the barracks at night.. downloaded the Riflemen's Creed from Full Metal Jacket.. The next scene was 3 months later landing at Saigon International airport.. the background music was Beatles “Back to the USSR” it was shaping up..
The missions I shared w/ sqd mates I thought were good but got some feedback from Ranger Bob that kinda got me thinking about the whole thing..
Bob: Are you simulating marching through the jungle for 12 hours at a time?. Mission after mission when you finally find a VC/NVA outlook,.. no bodies home?.. Me: well, um.. no..
Bob: Are you simulating 80% humidity humping 75 pound kits bugs snakes ants.. there’s more diddlying ants in Viet Nam than any place in the world?.. Me:.. I.. ah.. um.. no..
Bob: When you DO finally make contact with the enemy, around chapter 10, does the radio go nuts? Is the squad leader shot dead in mid sentence? Is there mass confusion.. Can you hear the VC leader shouting orders in Vietnamese less than 10 meters away?.. Is the radio man wounded and screaming his bloody head off and won’t stop... he won’t stop!. compromising your units position?.. Do you have to call in a dust off medivac chopper every 10 minutes and have an open field for him to land?.. Tell me, in your simulation, does your M16A2 have a tendency to jam?.. sometimes the cartridge simply falls out? Finally, are you trying to glamorize the Viet Nam war?
Me: Ah Jeese Bob... that sounds a little bit too heavy..
Bob: It WAS heavy..
Well..... that kind of put an end to the Viet Nam project...
God Bless America and God Bless Ranger Bob..
