I find using real squad names of no consequence either way.  Do you want a bunch of squadrons named:

The Smurph Blueberries AVG or Staffel 69 of the Soaring boxmunches?

If you look hard enough, almost any name you come up with that doesnt have a blatently pop culture/moderism in it has been used by a real squad at some time.

Using real names has the same issue.  I find that I associate the person flying with whatever CPID they choose.  Yeager is just Yeager....he ain't Chuck Yeager, he is just a guy names Yeager.  Its just a way to identify people, not a way to associate them with historic figures.

Am I disparaging the feelings of Furry cat loving aliens everywhere.....am I just a guy named Al Franks.....am I just a guy named Aaron Leon Fountain....hmmmm

Its just a CPID, and just because you dont like taking a name associated with something else, doesnt make it wrong.  There are far more meaningful things to dwell on....even in this game.

Maybe think that one through again, laddy.

This thread was started by one individual in an attempt to piss and moan and rant and rave about yours truly. It appears Stony doesn't get enough attention at home or online, so he has to berate someone that comes here and uses a name Stony doesn't want him to use. Too bad. Life is unfair a lot of times, Stony. Sometimes you don't do anything wrong and a few people of extremely low intelligence run your name through the mud for years to come. Other times you kill, rape, and murder your own people, and the world sings your praises.

Get over it and move on.

Pongo your song is as old as they get. Read the sig.

The batteries might have been low on the irony meter. Well, in any case, what handles folks use is their own business, somebody wants "Maverick" or "Richtofen", who cares.  Let them be. Its an air combat sim, what are we supposed to draw inspiration from, famous shoe salesmen? Must be a tough day to find something to gripe about I guess.

No aces, no indiginous northern peoples, no animals, no sitcom extra terrestrials, no fictional movie gunfighters, no spell casters? :) wouldnt be very interesting at all.

What's so difficult in finding a name that is not related to anything?

Taking a real persons name as your handle isnt like wearing a Brett Farve jersey. You are acctually asking people to call you by that name. Its kinda weird. Especially when you shame the name you have taken.

Yes if you use someone elses name you should keep political thoughts and such completly to yourself.
If you by name affiliate yourself with a famous aviator, you
should be above reproach on all counts less you sully the name.

For the record I think its plain wrong.

And un-original  :p

For the Record.....

CB Radio Guys use "Handles"

Pilots use "Callsigns"

AirWarrior players use "CPIDs"

AcesHigh players use "GameIDs"

So, If a Bunch of AirWarrior Guys on CB Radios want to use real pilot names or squadrons,  I dont see why anyone here cares ;)

Two questions.

What's AirWarrior?

Who has really used a CB since the 70's?:D

Oh yeah. I gather the purpose of a thread on a BB is to throw out an idea for discussion and ideas.
Aren't you glad we read yours too?

As for the use of names in general....

I guess names can be used to honor or disrepect.  It is would be how they are presented that would matter.

Our Squadron uses a historic name.   Our website recognises and remembers those men that fought so valiantly from Henderson Feild many years ago.   Iv talked with thier Historian and Iv never heard a complaint of our use,  In fact its been praise for keeping he name alive and remembered.   I think that it is approperate usage.

Present a name with recognition of who you are honoring and use it with respect and all will be fine.

I don't think Major SnoGoose would mind at all. I think he would be rather honored!
