Before we went all soft and girly and handed in our weapons, I used to have an old .410 shotgun specifically for dealing with snakes in the yard....think you'll find most every non-urban house did, or something similar.
Mild recoil ,small size and a good spread of shot at 15 yards made it ideal for a snake gun.
Handguns were a bit of a rarity even before the Great Oestregen Surge that overcame our government and disarmed my fellow Aussies, so small shotguns usually filled the anti-snake role.
BTW, I'm not sure on this, but I think all our snakes, deadly or not, are protected fauna, ie, it's illegal to kill them.
but if you have a 6ft King Brown on your patio, I guess the law doesnt count for much.
