Title: The cubbies!
Post by: SteveBailey on June 02, 2008, 12:28:26 AM
OMG.  The agony never ends. This year our cubbies have raised cub fan hopes ever higher. Hard will be the fall as our beloved losers crash... normal timing would be right after the all star break.  O the humanity!

With a nickname like "Cubbies" What do you expect?

LOL yes I know its the "Cubs"

But lets face it.
Discribing a group of grown men as "Cubbies"  doesnt exactly excude a group of killers. Or a bunch of guys one would expect to win anything
Particularly comming out of Chicago
Sounds like a ballet act complete with pink tutus

Now. Change that nickname to somethihg like "The Hit Men"
THEN you could expect something.

Hmmm I kinda like that name
"The Chicago Hit Men"

But the "Cubbies"?

Now I ask you.
If you were to play for a team.
Whom would you rather play for?

"The Chicago Hit Men"

Or

"The Cubbies" ?

I am yet another Waukegan, IL dyed-in-the-wool Cubs fan.

Been to the old Comiskey....loved it...especially in the old Bill Veek days and fireworks.

Been to Brewers games....loved it...caught a Thurmon Munson foul ball.  Hot dogs had my favorite Boetjes Brown Mustard...wish I had been old enough to have an ice cold Miller back then.

But an afternoon game at Wrigley...even in the summer could have a slight chilly breeze off lake Michigan.  To see your childhood heroes (ok...they went to the playoffs in '68) in real life (and NOT in black & white)...was priceless for a kid.

And when guys like Pirates stars Roberto Clemente & Willie Stargell, or Tom Sever of the Mets, or Tommy Agee of the Giants, Pete Rose & Johnny Bench of the Reds come to town....awesome.  They don't make pre-steroid era guys like that anymore.

Count me wishing I could be in the 3rd base side in a box seat heating a $8 hot dog and $5 dollar beer with a big red "C" on my hat.

I grew up in Hammond IN, sandwiched between Gary, East Chicago, and the crappy south side of Chicago.  The cubs give me a headache.

It's the Chicago Bears all the way, only team worth watching.

Why do think Harry Carray called us:

"The Die Hard Cubs Fans"

I also LOVE The Bears.  It was a heck of a long time before the Superbowl XX win, and almost did it again a couple of years ago.

It could be worse...I COULD be a Sacremento fan.

"The Chicago Hit Men" was a nick name given to the White Sox by the news papers or something a few years back.

I'll take the name of a wild animal at any age over a pair of stinky socks no mater what their color.  (Socks???  why would you name your team after an article of clothing? Oh yeah, and the New York Knickerbockers, ????)

Just remember Cub fans. Even with Lou, and Fukudome they are still the Chicago Cubs. They have a nice lead and may win the Division. But come October they will choke like they always do. And the more confidence you have going into the playoffs the more painful the collapse will be.  :rofl

He was just now starting to get comfortable with his legs and starting to run again the in the last week to ten days. I think the Cubs can weather this injury(barring any further ones).
Title: Re: The cubbies!
Post by: wrongwayric on June 12, 2008, 11:05:03 AM
Soriano is so injury prone it's unreal. :O So far the season has been a blast and almost surreal. I don't think his loss will impact them to much right now and actually it's probably fortunate it happened now instead of later. We'll see what happens today and the next 3 games but i don't think they'll miss him to much. If Derrick Lee gets hot again and picks up the slack they won't miss a beat IMO. :aok

Funny how they never get injured until after they sign a big contract. They are not getting 17m a years worth out of this guy.
Title: Re: The cubbies!
Post by: kotrenin on June 12, 2008, 12:11:26 PM
It'll be fine,  Soriano will be back around the begining of August and will be hitting and running well before the last week of August.  He will be back in time to pick up the slack from a worn out and tired team.  They have enough depth and plenty of other power hitters to cope with his temporary loss.   :aok

Post by: wrongwayric on June 13, 2008, 06:36:14 AM
Jeeezzz how weird was the win over the braves? They pick up Jim Edmonds who most thought was washed up and he hits a homer to tie the game, then they load the bases, and the guy on the team hit by pitches most gets hit and walks in the wining run? :O Unreal. :D
Title: Re: The cubbies!
Post by: kotrenin on June 13, 2008, 09:07:21 AM
This is what I'm trying to say Ric, these guys get wins as a team, no one is really dominating the stats, no one player is carrying the team.  They all have their roles to play and they play them well.  All season long they have been manufacturing their runs "get 'em on, move 'em up, get 'em in."  Unlike in seasons past where the top hitters, i.e. Sosa, would hack at every pitch and strike out a lot, every body on this team is being more selective at the plate and they aren't ashamed to take a walk and let the next batter be the hero and hit it out (or more likely hit a base hit or double.)

I wouldnt get to cocky. The three best teams in the NL are in the Central (dont believe me look at the standings) They are going to be beating up on each other the last half of the season. About this time last year it looked like Milwaukee had the Central all locked up and you know how that turned out.

don't take this personally.........but I think jerseys with mens names on them are for 12 year old kids and younger.  at least...when it comes to wearing them.    for collecting purposes...framed....I'm not opossed to it.........but I've never been a merch buyer...for any team in any sport.  I'm also not into autographs.  for what it's worth though.... The Cubs are sending 7 players to the All-Star game this year, it's a club record that includes 2 rookies that will be starters, Geovany Soto & Kosuke Fukudome, Soto is only the 2nd rookie catcher to get into the All-Star game.

And btw, the Sox suck.

The last time the Cubs won a WS you had to ride a horse to the ballpark. And the ball park was named West Side Park, not Wrigley.

I think Moses still wore shortpants too. And we only had 46 states in the Union.

The longest streak of losing in American Pro sports history.

Yeah I don't think the Sox have it this year, more likely it's gonna be the Ray's or Angles.  Even if it is Cubs Vs. Sox the Cubs have already shown they can beat the Sox winning 4 of 6 against them this year.

I'm a Tigers fan, but you're on crack.   What would give the CUbs the CLEAR ADVANTAGE are Harden, Dempster and Zambrano.   To top it off, you have Kerry Wood closing.    Figure those three starting 2 games each for a WS.   You aren't winning three games against them.   It's that simple.

Cubs swept at Wigley, Sox swept at Comiskey (I still have trouble calling it the Cell.)

Only one of those I'd take on the Sox staff is Zambrano.  That guy is a horse, and he and Ozzie would make quite a pair.

Harden is fragile, Dempster is unproven.  Buehrle, Vazquez, Danks, and Floyd are no slouches.

As far as Kerry Woods is concerned:  I'd take Bobby Jenks over him any day.   :)

I'm not really on the White Sox Kool-aide, I just think they have a better shot than most people are giving them.  (They still gotta put away the Twins, which has not proven easy the last few years.)

I'm just doing a community service here, trying to temper Cubs fan's enthusiasm so the collapse will not hurt as much.  Come to think of it, I should dig up the thread from 2003 when the Cubs were in the NLCS.  Was quite entertaining.

I understand the ball busting.   But to say the Sox will not "bounce em".   Harden isn't hurt, Zambrano and Wood are fine as well.   Wood took the smart play by sitting on the DL when he did.

Again, I'm a Tigers fan, but I'm a baseball fan and put bias aside.

Let's keep counting them down.

The magic number is down to 2 with that incredible game today, going into the 9th down by 4, then having 2 outs and scoring those 4 runs to tie it up with a single run, then with Soto's 3 run homer, then end up winning it in the 12th with Wood getting the win, was a great game to watch.

That was a fun game to watch, especially all the celebrating after the game, I'm glad they won it this way instead of winning it by Milwaukee losing, plus they did it at home, you know Wrigleyville will be going crazy all night, they said they have all the streets down there shut down.

This is the first time in 100 years the Cubs have made playoff appearances in back to back seasons, last time was 1906-07-08, and we all know it's been exactly 100 years since a championship, but Wrigley is built on a boulevard of broken dreams, so lets  :pray

Now, it's megalopolis from the loop almost to Rockford.

I'm a Chicago sports Fan

I was born in Bridgeport and lived 6 blocks from Comiskey park so I'm a Sox fan first

Truth need not be said by me but....Cub fans are cry babies and cry babies lose

100 years of losing and they still just don't get it, the cubs choke every year no matter how close they come....luck on the other hand is a different story.   Do I want them to win...yes.   Do I look foward to the day they do..NO...the gloating would go on for a 100 years till there next championship

Will they make it??   Hell no

I'm a little surprised Pinella obviously doesn't have this team ready to play Oct. baseball, "tho hes been accused of that in the past". I'm even more surprised they haven't won a playoff game yet. I'm more of a Sox fan but still I "feel the pain" of Cubs fans This year is an even worse one then 1969 was, and I sure remember that one, the choke of '84, the choke of '03, and the total breakdown of '04.

This year they actually have the team that can, and should, go all the way. But coming back from an 0-2 start against a team as hot as the Dodgers? I dont think thats going to happen. They are probably going to lose tomorrows game and then The Cubs ownership is going to have to break up this team. They cant win in Oct. and theres no point keeping it together.

Problem is they are saddled with some big, big contracts. Soriano?? They couldn't give him away, Fukadome too. Dempsters going to want big money as a starter cause his contract is up now so hes gone. Their catcher Soto, whos had a huge year, is going to want a ton of dough. And others coming off of good years, with contracts up too, are going to want big pay hikes. Guys like Theriot, Marshall, Marmol, Fontenot, and Cedeno.

They already have a huge team payroll of 120 million. And for what? For a team that cant win an Oct. game? I'll bet they have 55 million sunk this year into Soriano, Ramirez, Lee, and Fukadome, and not one of them have an OCT RBI this year. Soriano is batting .111 this Oct, Fukadome is hitting .000, Ramirez .250, and Lee .429 but again no RBIs between the 4 of them. Soriano has a playoff BA of .219 with an OBP of .271 out of 169 at bats in his career during Oct. And this is your LOF? An OBP of .271? Ramirez has a playoff BA of .203 out of 17 playoff games. Lee hit a .242 in 22 playoff games.

Yeah I was at a game at Wrigley against the Astros a few years ago, I was on the first base line, right by the Astros bullpen, about 4 rows from the wall, the whole game all me & my friends did was heckle the Astros pitchers warming up, one of the pitching coaches eventually flipped us off, and they started yelling stuff back at us.  This was about a week & a half before that game against the Dodgers, I believe, were that father & son Cubs fan took the hat off one of the pitchers sitting there and started that brawl in the stands between the pitching staff and the fans.
