looks like Ike wants a piece of Houston.  How will the city handle a Cat 3 storm?

Houston will fill up with water, downtown blocked off, people stranded at Walmart
I-10 closed, 610 closed, I-45 closed, Sam Houston Toll (tool) road closed.

So we will see an evacuation of Houston then.  Are they already talking about it?

I doubt it, maybe areas closer to the bay.  Houston's problem is drainage, they can barely handle a big rainstorm, streets and parklots flood.   Galveston is gonna sux though

They said we should be making some kind of plans to get out, in case; it's likely to come to Houston.  I've seen the CPU models and 1 has it hitting just south-west of Galveston... Another hitting Corpus, and others in Beaumont and LA.

We'll see. We flew our planes out to Dallas when Rita hit. It was crazy looking at all the traffic standing still that Thursday morning. And then all the cars left on the Freeways when we flew back in Monday... Most ran outta gas just 20 mi outta Houston.

I live in B/CS and was here for Rita.  We had a lot of evacuees pass through here and it appears we will have the same again.

we used to live in Houston 72-74.   I was 13 i think, 1973?  I dont remember if it was a hurricane or tropical storm... started about 8am, rained alot, they let us out early from school at about 12 or 1 and already alot of the roads were flooded and that was on the northwest side of houston around Little York rd and 290.

They've done a huge amount of work since Allison. It doesn't flood anything like it used to.

Yup.  Early 70's is nothing compared to drainage now.  But there are still some places the just flood no matter what. A good ole Texas Flood!

Just an update that got emailed to me.

Subject: Hurricane Ike, 11am Wednesday

My brother-in-law works for Oklahoma Climatological and Meteorology Society.  He is also Assistant Dean of Oklahoma University School of Meteorology specializing in Severe weather.  Here is his take on Hurricane Ike and what we can expect....

Hello Everyone!!!
I apologize for the mass email, but I thought I would try to put Hurricane Ike into perspective for many of you that should probably be leaving the Texas Coastal Plains tomorrow!

Tomorrow (9/11) is an anniversary of a major disaster, but not the one that you will see on CNN, etc.
On Sept 11, 1961, Hurricane Carla roared ashore between Port Lavaca and Port O'Connor as a Cat 4 hurricane.

Here are some Carla specifics that I will use for comparison.

At landfall, Carla's sustained winds measured at Matagorda Bay were 120 mph
Gusts were estimated as high as 170mph. Landfall Pressure was 931mb
Carla resulted in 110mph sustained winds in Victoria, 90mph sustained winds in Galveston, 70mph sustained winds were reported at inland locations such as San Antonio and Austin, and 50mph winds were
reported as far north as Dallas as the storm carved its way up the I35 corridor. Damage was reported as far north as Oklahoma City.

Carla was also a prolific tornado producer (26 of them) and 43 people died during this storm.

Over the past 50 years, Hurricane Ike is the storm that most closely resembles Hurricane Carla.
Ike's track will be similar (although maybe slightly south), the size of the storm will be similar, and the intensity could also be similar. Given the proximity of a cold front that is expected to be north of
Ike (adding some wind shear), tornadoes will also be a threat.

Here is the timeline as best I can tell. I will update this as conditions warrant.

By noon on Friday, coastal locations from Corpus Christi to Galveston should be feeling tropical storm force gusts of at least 40mph (potentially sustained tropical storm force winds if Ike is a Cat 4 at this time)
Inland locations from Victoria, El Campo to Angleton will start feeling the effects in the early afternoon hours on Friday.
By 6pm on Friday, coastal locations from Corpus Christi to Freeport could be experiencing gusts to hurricane force (74 mph).
By midnight Friday night/Saturday morning, the central Texas coast will be seeing winds near 100mph with higher gusts.
Inland locations from Victoria to El Campo to Angleton could be experiencing hurricane force winds, with tropical storm force winds extending into Houston.
The minimum central pressure at this time could be as low as 935mb (remember, Carla was 931mb).

The eye should come ashore between midnight and 6am Saturday morning near Seadrift.
That places Victoria in the eye wall by mid-morning on Saturday with wind gusts in excess of 100mph
Hurricane force gusts could be experienced as far inland past Hallettsville to as far north as I-10 by this time.

By noon on Saturday, a weakening Ike should be located south of San Antonio, but the entire Texas coastal plains south of I-10 should still be experiencing hurricane force gusts, especially along the coast.
This means that some locations from Victoria to El Campo to Lake Jackson could experience sustained tropical storm winds, becoming hurricane force, then back to tropical storm force for approximately
18 hours. Not to mention the tornado threat that will persist from Friday afternoon through the day on Saturday. By this time, Austin should also be feeling the effects of tropical storm force gusts.
Folks, to have wind clobbering your house for 18 hours straight is as difficult on you as it is on the house. That is a tremendous amount of stress, both physically, and mentally. It's not worth the toll it
will take on you to stay in these areas.

Hurricane force gusts could be experienced in Austin between noon and 6pm on Saturday as the storm cruises up I-35 with Austin potentially taking a direct hit. I probably should mention the flood risk at this
point. The models put out over a foot of rain in the Austin area on Saturday. Toss in high winds on wet ground and there will be some very large trees that will come down across Central Texas.
Winds should start to subside from Victoria to Galveston at this time.

By the way, did you know that the wind loading stress failure limit on the "Godzillatron" scoreboard in the south end zone at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium is only 90mph? (The UT Athletic Dept had not considered this potential safety risk until a dedicated UT alum working at OU brought it up in a conference
call. Their response? "Wow, we never even thought of that thing blowing in and crushing the south bleachers.")
By midnight Saturday night/Sunday morning, the storm will be slowly moving northward through the Texas Hill Country. Conditions should improve for damage assessment along the coast by noon on Sunday.
Conditions in Austin may not improve until after noon on Sunday.
I realize this is a lot of detail for a 3-day forecast, and to be honest, we just aren't very good at hurricane forecasting. (Of course that never stops any of us from trying to do it anyway!)

I will try to update this email as conditions warrant.

My advice? I would recommend moving inland! I would suggest Houston for the eastern folks, and Austin for everyone else (although Austin stands to take a very severe hit and could also be without power for a while.) Dont panic! But, go to the grocery store today. And don't buy frozen foods!!
Plan for power to be out in many places starting on Friday down near the coast, and maybe by Saturday and through the weekend in Austin.

I understand being worried but don't assume a Tornado is going to hit Carrollton. The Storm is tracking NE, the worst weather for N Texas probably will be the Marshall to Texarkana area. Even that doesn't mean automatic Tornado. Hurricane spawned twisters are not the same animal as the big F4/F5s we get in the spring. I hope your family is safe, theres room for concern but not panic.

Was on the radio this evening with a station in Galveston. He was planning to ride it out... changed his mind when his local  weather synopsis included the terminology 'certain death'. Storm surge expected to top 24 feet.

He's on the road now... I hope he manages to make it out; my understanding is the road network is overwhelmed.

It's looking like not enough folks boogied when the boogieing was good.

I taped my windows and stocked the pantry and fridge.

I didn't buy much.  This may actually be a chance to eat all of the stuff that we have packed in the pantry that we never eat.  I have always ranted that we have a year's worth of food and that there is no need to buy more.  'Bout to find out if I was right.  I'm prolly not.  She usually is.  Nuff said, here she comes, she knows I'm typing this.....

what Ike is going to do, what it`s actual track will be, wind speeds, etc.
I casually asked....."What ya think the hurricane is going to do?"

Its sad to see people making fun of this tragedy that is ready to happen..yea go watch
football and bbq..mean while people are going to lose everything they have.
Texas has 35% of oil refineries in the U.S.. Billions of tax dollars will be needed to
rebuild.

Prices of fuel will go way up. thousands of people will be displaced. But at least
you all can get the rain you need and have a few days off to bbq and watch football.

Well, maybe some would like to make light of it, to better cope with what’s to come.  We/Most of us are adults and we know what fate awaits most & we do feel for them.

To pop off and assume that we have no morals is kind of atypical.

Most of us in this thread (Texan’s) are going to get hit HARD.

And show us where you get your stats. from.

Exactly.  The eye of the storm is supposed to come directly over Rattfink and I but we've done what we need to do to get ready.  Now it is just a waiting game.

We know what it's like to go through it so I don't really think we are being insensitive; however, I suppose if you are ultra-sensitive then anything bothers you.

I am hearing about a cargo ship that lost its engines as it was leaving Port Arthur to get out of the path of the storm and the Coast Guard is not able to go get the people off the ship.  Those people need our prayers.

I've heard the Coast Guard rethinking that decision to not get out there. Apparently, if the freighter drifts off in certain directions, it will make it more plausable for the CG to safely get a helicopter out there. Seems like that window of availability is coming to a close though.

Yeah, that really sucks that they are unable to rescue the crew.  It will put the Coast Guard in danger to even make it plausible thus resluting in more injured or heaven forbid, death.

Another interesting tidbit: The Galveston jail hasn't been evacuated. I'm a little bit surprised to have heard that they left about 1000 prisoners & staff at the jail.  With as structured & procedure oriented as a jail must be, seems like they'd be the first one with a solid evacuation procedure.

Last I heard there was no plan to evac Houston. Evacuating Houston during Rita cost 110 lives while the hurricane itself killed only 9.

Last I heard there was no plan to evac Houston. Evacuating Houston during Rita cost 110 lives while the hurricane itself killed only 9.

They've got Houston & the surrounding areas divided into sections, designated by either numbers or letters.  Some sections they asked to evacuate, other sections they asked to shelter in place.  I did hear not too long ago that they expected 20 ft. surge at Baytown, though.... which is getting kinda dang close to where my in-laws are.

I have several close friends who live in Houston that were not told to evacuate, voluntarily or mandatory but have left anyway.  Couple of them went on to Lampasas to family and another couple coming here to stay with me in Bryan.  I ‘m glad they got out, storms are too unpredictable.  We are still going to catch a piece up here but hopefully not as bad.  It’s almost here…Good luck Whiteman, RattFink, Dnil, all <S>

Winds picking up here in Sugar Land.  We're sheltering-in-place.  1st hurricane for wife and kids so it'll be quite an experience.  We expect it to really pick up sometime after dinner.  The surge already coming in well ahead of the storm surge is really unexpected.  That's a big warning sign.  I can't believe there are folks still trying to ride it out along the coast.

Downtown Houston is Closed... Major damage... 2.8 million still without power. Mongomery County (Conroe area) will not have power for 2-4 weeks. I heard 3 dead in Galveston, not confirmed officially. I have power in Katy Tx, though my Parents do not (Fulshear, TX). NO Ice anywhere, barely any gas.

Worst part is we slammed by a storm front last night, Bringing more rain than the hurricaine... Which flooded most of the Houston area and surrounding areas even more. People trapped in Houston homes because of Bayou Flooding and downed trees blocking streets.

More to come, gotta clean up.

I'd personally like to thank all the brain surgeons that cleaned their front yards immediately after the hurricane, and stuck everything down the storm drains. I appreciated it, especially when my home office flooded the night after the hurricane during much lighter rains. Thank you my dear neighbors.

I'm back.  The hurricane was hellacious and the devastation it left behind wasn't to good either. Obtaining basic items such as food and gas requires long waits in long lines.

The cool weather couldn't have come at a better time and we are lucky to have that and not the 100*F temps that we had a couple of weeks ago. I stocked up with water and perishable foods and I have been doing fine.

I'm glad to hear that you guys fared ok.

I hear ya.  My parents ran into the same problem with their neighbors.  They were told to stack the limbs and other debris on the lawn but most people stacked them in the street next to the curb.

My folks have a huge limb hanging by mere fibers over their fence and they are waiting for it to be trimmed.

Here in Conroe we have received most of our power as of last night and we are getting back to normal slowly.

Here in Ohio we lost power to 1.1 million customers. we still have around 150,000
people out of power. Trees down everywhere. I was out of power for 3 days.
what a wake up call. restraunts were running out of food. Batterys and ice were
sold out fast. Everything in my fridge was ruined. Ugly

I got to finish Clapton's autobiography while hunkering down in Beaumont.  First thing I did when I got power was put in Crossroads Guitar Festival '04 and cranked up 'Cocaine'.  Finest version of that song I've ever heard.

SRV's 'Texas Flood' was kind of a no brainer.  So I went with 'Couldn't Stand The Weather'.

I stayed awake for the entire storm, minus an hour nap when the eye passed over.  The backside hit and all hell broke loose.

 :devil,

Well hurricane Ike is making money for me, we sent technicians from our ARTCC here in Albuquerque to Houston.  So to cover the holes left in the schedule everybody else is getting a little overtime.  Apparently Houston's center was on engine power for 2 1/2 days.  And a number of the technicians lost their houses.  Other than that things aren't too bad four the FAA personnel still have not reported in the Fed is most likely because they're stuck on the road somewhere.  It sounds like the cleanup will be done for the FAA in a couple of days and then maybe I'll be able to get some sleep. :) it is interesting though that just after the hurricane the powers that be decided to top off my fuel tanks we picked up 7500 gallons of diesel day before yesterday, they give me about 10 to 15 days of uninterrupted power if I need it.

Good luck everyone,
Kevin
