I was just reading an article on ign about Fighter Ace closing down http://pc.ign.com/articles/108/1084575p1.html and it speaks of FA, WB, AW, CFS, ect but not a word about AH. Its not the first time I read an article where all the sims get mentioned but AH.
Otherwise the article is quite good. Its also funny to see that WB are offering free months to former FA players.
But still I find the lack of mentioning AH a bit strange.

Well, I would disagree that fighter Ace was one of the early pioneer's that paved the way for the huge MMO
Early online sims like Fighter Ace (and Kesmai's Air Warrior and iEntertainment's Warbirds) may not have had trolls and wizards but they nevertheless paved the way for the huge MMO market that exists today.
I would agree that Air Warrior then Warbirds could lay claim to that feat........
but none of the others... that is prob why Aces High is not mentioned.......
YMMV....
-
Because the people on top never get praise.................. The harsh reality is they always want to knock down the good ones! HTC, the good ones!

Luckily enough I still have some old friends that managed to post up some AH links on their forum. I believe once they have tried both games the better product WILL shine through, for all of those players with half a clue.
-
It also could be as simple as the fact those ones mentioned are all relatively obscure compared to AH. It's kind of like, if you ask the average person walking down the street if they've heard of Warhammer 40k Online, you're probably going to get a blank stare. If you ask them if they've heard of World of Warcraft, they may have been witness to the dust bowl in the 30s, but they've probably heard the name somewhere along the way.
AH is the most popular one out there. People with an interest in online flight sims can find it pretty easily if they go looking. The author might have just assumed everybody's heard of AH.
Wiley.
-
The best advertising is word of mouth... I'd be suspect of any game that offered 2 free months, it is indicative of an company's end stage marketing ploy.
-
He's clearly talking about AW and WB as being the start to something bigger.
That's true. He's not saying they were the only things. He's not saying AH was at the start of it all (AH was not, so he's right in leaving it out).
If this were some showcase about flight sims I can see your issue, but frankly it's not an article about AH. AH has no connection to FA.
So, what's the issue?
-
Ya - gotta agree with Krusty and TC on this - AW mid 1980's and later WB in IMHO are the roots of our present day flight sim world. Aces High got it's birth out of WB's later.
It's like you're upset that Toyota isn't mentioned when including Olds and Ford regarding the birth of vehicle assembly lines. Toyota just didn't have anything to do with it origionally.
Still my feeling is that whenever a competitor disappears the overall flight market is weakened. All sims bring something unique to our world upon which new developers are able to build bigger and better.
Fighter Ace - RIP :(
...cheers eh! :D
-
got to agree it is not the sign of a healthy genre ...
i'm not sure the overall numbers playing these types of games have ever improved since the peak of WB/AW ...
-
When I was trying to improve the Aces High Wikipedia article recently (it's in an abysmal state), I found that there's almost nothing I can do with it. Why? Because there are next to zero third party sources for this game. IIRC, I think I found one article that referred to Aces High. To be honest, I was shocked. For such an excellent game, it was as if it didn't even exist outside of this website.

I doesn't. I was looking for over a year to find a flight sim (before I started in AH). AH never came up in any searches back in 2003. The only way I found out was word of mouth and the guy had to write down the URL for the site.
-
I don't know what HTC's plan or philosophy on marketing is, but a simple press release announcing any new additions to the game would go along way.
Many "Articles" we read are actually nothing more than cleverly disguised press releases.
HTC could issue these themselves, or hire a PR person to write it and release it.
The PR people also have the contacts to get the press release or article picked up by magazines or web sites.
At the company I work for we have done it both ways with good search results.
-
The game's so poorly known that when I first downloaded it, I assumed it was one of those cult-following-only games, simply because I couldn't find much documentation at all for it. It was only when I happened across it from another website a year later that I realised I was wrong.
I just googled "Aces High II", and looked at IGN's and GameSpy's pages for AH. IGN doesn't mention any updates to the game since 2003, and GameSpy contains an update for 2004. Quite frankly, I'm not surprised this game seems to have only about 5,000 active players - the third-party sources about AH suck.
Oh, and Gamespot actually has images and updates from 2006. Amazing!
-
I dont think they (HTC) automatically spend money on advertising.......I sense them pushing the advertising when the numbers need boosting. Most likely they use a sophisticated forcast model to determine when they need to invest.
As far as FA is concerned, I would not think the average FA guy is going to be interested in something as complex and challenging as AH.....For this reason they will certainly be more attracted to WBs. The good news for WBs is that an infusion of 100 new customers would be an huge game saving deal. In AH thats probably just a weekly swing in membership.
-
I got into flight sim/games by accident, I was looking for a tank game and found armoured assault which is part of warbirds ( I find it ironic now that I hate gving and I'm crap at it.) and didn't hear anything about aces high for about another six months and then it was slanderous. Its a wonder I made it here but I did, I was simply completely ignorant to the fact that it existed.
-
I suppose it is because no one is actually getting hold of AH2 in the mainstream.
-
I found ah2 from the history channel commercials.
Ah2 is great but im not sure they could handle 10,000 players
I think the reason they dont get in the main stream is because its a small company. Its a matter of keeping within thier limits.
IF they did get some seed money to go big time it would mean a very different game.
Perhaps they just want to keep it profitable but small
-
I believe they are targeting a certain audience
-
I found ah2 from the history channel commercials.
Same here. I had never heard of it previously, and since the commercial I saw aired over a year ago I haven't heard or seen anything about AH since, outside of this website.

^ This
Imagine what TardTastic Tuesday would be like with 3600 people on at once. The Claim Humpers would be bigger than the Chinese Red Army. The DA would be even more chaotic. And where would they put all the extra players when LWO is capped at 150 players??

I suspect HTC is keeping the game on the down low for this very reason. In a lot of cases big doesn't always make better.
I found this game by goggling flight sims and just happened to get lucky and stumbled onto AH2.

How do you use goggles to find a flight sim? :P
-
beer goggles man. beer goggles! :lol
-
Last sim standing will prob absorb the other flight sim player bases, then AH will get more recognition. At the minute its looking like ah and ww2online but ww2online isn't really a flight sim.
-
beer goggles man. beer goggles! :lol
:lol
-
i think agent will gt owned
-
i don't know il-2 has already ported to the game boxes hasn't it? that may give it the inside track
10,000 players would be a problem, but i am sure it would be a good problem to have as problems go.

That's weird. I found it by Google-ing "wwii flight simulator" back on whatever the date in my signature is. :D
-
I like the way HT rolls.
I assume he's not your typical CEO type with it all being about profit... He and Skuzzy like their cozy hours with trips to starbucks a couple times a day. They don't wanna have to buy for FNGs that were hired to handle the surge...
-
No....I'd really like to make millions of dollars. If you have 10,000 friends looking for a flight sim, please send them our way. ;)

hmm
Does HTC give a discount for referrals?
:headscratch:
-
The first rule of AH is don't talk about AH. :noid
I always mention AH whenever I'm talking to someone with an interest in aviation.
Soda last time I looked AH had a program where a link to AH on your website could generate income. We link to it on the Musketeers.org site but we didn't sign up for the program.
-
I played with a couple of folks way back in DF2:JK online deathmatches, and eventually joined a Raider Wars squadron with some of them. They eventually moved onto Tribes (the first) for a long time and were pretty well respected. One or two of them I'd play WB HTH against (it was free, I was young and unemployed) even though I was rubbish. One day he said "You know about Aces High, right?" and I said "What now?"
He gave me the URL. It was still being developed, but I followed nonetheless. I didn't make the beta or anything because I had no 3D card at the time.
Word of mouth ftw!
-
If 10,000 people came to AH all of a sudden, Skuzzy would not be able to handle the load and they would have to outsourse tech support to India like 99% of the other country's. God help us.
-
This is how I found AH2. The review was done back in 2001 and the site hasn't even bothered to update any information about the game since 2006, these were only version updates.
http://uk.gamespot.com/pc/sim/aceshighii/index.html
HTC should really think about relaunching their product as most of the games I buy, I first see on sites like Gamespot and IGN, etc. Aces High 2 is hardly covered on these sites, maybe a paragraph and a super outdated picture if you're lucky.
If HTC want more subs, these sites would be my number one target for advertisement.
-
LOL HTC has been around now for 10 years and you guys still think they don't what they are doing???? I see the ads for the game on the Military Channel all the time, plus word of mouth. The flight sim producers are a small community and the ALL know each other, there is of course some "rocky" history amoung these "players" in this group and of course when one goes under the recommendation of the "failed" producer is hardly a pat on the back in my book :rofl.
Most of us have tried all the games out there and have friends playing the "other" games and some of us play them all, so I am sure HTC will get their share of FA players.
-
The Claim Humpers would be bigger than the Chinese Red Army.
:rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl
I don't care who you are...that's funny...and correct :aok

If 10,000 people came to the game I think HT would just add more arenas, I don't know anything about how many people their servers can support but I don't think 10k would be a problem. The only thing is like Dogg said, you need to have customer support for all those people and that's a busy job.
-
10,000 more people came to AH, well HiTech would be one happy man. But beyond that, the game would evolve much fast because there would be more revenue to reinvest in the product, and that would ultimately be better for all of us
-

Ok Yeager, spill the bean man. What position have you applied for? :rofl
-
10,000 new players gets us the B29 :aok
-
Maybe I'll dust off my resume... :D :lol
-
I also found Aces high from the History Channel. Does anyone know if the show Dogfights is still on. I haven't seen it in a while and that was my favorite show there. The commercials for aces high would come up about every other break.
-
Better SEO would not hurt at all. Especially within savvy high tech geniuses at HTC, this could be easily accomplished. That and the European market, btw. A little PR with game sites, magazines, blogs... All may be actions without money involved. Of course, results will be smaller.
I remember that I got hooked when I saw Computer Gaming World's cover for Confirmed Kill. I still keep that issue. I didn't had a computer then. Then CK became WB and I got a computer and internet access... by dial-up.... :D
Now, it's the few magazines, the gaming websites, the blogs, facebook, that improve your search results, all combined. One article here, one article there, a few well chosen keywords, a tag here and there, a link here and there...
When searching by "World War II combat flight sim" AH comes in #2. If you widen it to "combat flight sim" all 1st page is Microsoft´s. A small difference produces very different results... How often do you search deeper than the first page of search results? And it's the same with "combat flight game"...
We all should try to promote AH in our town, maybe in LAN meetings, where young gamers get togheter. If we managed to recruit 2 out of 100 would be awesome... We could try the armed forces recruitment approach, lol, "Young man, you look like you could become an Ace! Let me tell you how..."
Cheers

And even that is out dated (and I have never seen six countries)...
http://compsimgames.about.com/od/aceshigh/Aces_High.htm (http://compsimgames.about.com/od/aceshigh/Aces_High.htm)
Simulate World War II in the online game, "Aces High." You'll play one of 50 planes from a choice of six countries with "Aces High." Offline and 8 player head-to-head is always free in "Aces High." Other options require you to pay a monthly fee./quote]

That issue hangs on my wall.
Funny story about that cover. When I was creating CK I was working for a different company in my other life as an EE, and creating CK at night. Was in the break room when I heard 2 guys talking about this game CK in the magazine. Was fun walking over to them and asking them if they would like to see it at my desk.

No Offense, HT,
I would rather u not have 10000 people, your servers barely handle TT adaquelty. Other then that. My friend turned me on to this game, when he was falling asleep at work. i asked what u have a hard night? He just replied that he was playing this addictive thing. Been here since then.

Don't worry about ignorance... There is nothing you can do about it.
Never, not once, does the op realize it is his computer that can't handle Titanic Tuesday. (I upgraded last year and haven't had a single issue on Tuesday's since)

I really don't mind the relative difficulty in finding AH. At least then you have an outside chance
of finding someone who really enjoys the subject matter rather than the latest gamer fad.

I came across AH looking for an MMORPG to play. It was on a free trials list.
I thought ti was gonna be absolute toejame cause the download was tiny and I'd never heard of it.
Chances are article editor hasn't heard of AH more than anything..
it would be nice if there'd been full arenas 24/7.. and not drop down to 70ish during off hours.. i mean that's quite miniscule for a game of this scale.
i get the whole "family team" development toejam and such... but it sort of makes loyal players suffer...
the slow patches and updates.. the stagnation.. now ww1 splitting the workload more..
..reasons I quit this game. it got boring, and i got tired of paying for something that hardly moved. I remember how damn long i was waiting for the new terrain, in the end i quit before it even came out.
-
I stumbled upon AH when I was reading some article in simHQ.com. It was not even about AH, but used screen shots from the game and mentioned the name in the caption. I went looking for it and could never enjoy another game again. Damit, there always have to be some smartass that makes everyone else look bad.
More to the point: I never met another person who knew what AH was before I mentioned it to him. Never.
-
Saw a commercial and checked it out.

My brother in law was telling me about this online game using wwII planes etc......didnt quite hear the name, did a search, found aces high, and the rest as they say "is history".
Only little problem was, he wasn't playing aces high lol...........

watch about that one humbleb
i was beaten by bringing up this issue, the ww1 will slow down the ongoing development of the 'main' game, AH2
I know WB very well, the game the playerbase. I worked for years there as an official trainer. I don't think that a lot of FA players will stay at WB.
They have a real big graphical bug, a massive flickering at all computers running a GT200 chipset nvidea card.
Additional they have big warping issues for most european players, so i see more difficulties than strong points for wb. The question is how to attract AH2 at that playerbase.
One real strong point is the fact that there are massive scenarios and different events avaible at AH2. One strong drawback is for new or intrested players the sometimes 'unfriendly' culture of this forum. here we all have to improve to make sure that this game have a good future
-
dhryan, it wasn't that you brought up a question about splitting the development. It was the fact that you insulted us by saying we weren't talented enough to make a game that looked as good as another game you mentioned.

:lol sorry, i don't want to talk it over again, doesen't make sense, just go back to the thread and read it again, i apologized thereabout if anyone of you feels insulted, but no reaction about my sorrow, instead the clubbing goes on.... and at the end i see nowadays 20 players in ww1 and 450 in the ww2 arenas
well, i make my piece about it..... there are so many good point about improving the gameplay brought up on this forums, major and minor. At the end each player decides what he likes to do. WB got its first lack of player when wb 3.0 didn't offered the same strat tlike wb 2.77 did, the next lag of player they got in 2007 when several squads changed over from WB to AH
I my opinion HTC should have a community manager who look over the boarder and try to be active on several forums about dogfight sims. Pushing it a bit more, its not that visible as it could be
cheers

Why? its not your business? you don't own or work for HTC I can't remember them sending me any money either guess I don't own it. The problem with a forum is a lot of people seem to think they know best, rather than someone who does it for a living and has done for a good while. If it came down to players calling all the shots or HTC I know what one I'd pick. :salute

lol i swear people would complain if you hung them with a new rope, There doing a great job with the game, its been online for 10+years.. i think they know what there doing by now, the player base seems very loyal and at times critical, but i can understand that at times, but then again some people get alittle carried away with there opinions and well if your that unhappy why play then? we will get what we get when its time, i find nothing wrong with that what so ever, just enjoy the game gezzz :old:

Coming over from FA, that has to be the most ridiculous assertion I have yet read.
better get used to it. We have more crackpots and nutjobs than you can shake a stick at. Brown nosers, haters, trolls (don't feed em), shade accounts, welcome to the AH forums, sometimes it can be very entertaining just reading some of it over your morning cup of caufee.
AKAK said it best in another thread, DysFUNctional family.

It wasn't about the forums, it was about this.

well i know you are active a AGW, but let me say, its not that advertising as it could be, because, its your company, so if some of these morons like stiglr throw some s*** in, it would be better to have someone acting without emotions sometimes .....

Again thank you for that wonderful in sight, I value your years and years or experience managing a computer gaming company.Any other extremely great insights you can let me in on? BTW can you send me a cost benefit analysis of your idea and have it on my desk by Wednesday? Also would you please send me a shovel like the one you have, it appears to be a super shovel with how fast it seams to be digging.

LOL lets make WWII a four plane set and only have dogfighting and see how many servers are needed :rofl Sheez you WWI haters are really getting tiresome. HTC should NOT be taking a beating for offering a WWI dogfight choice, in a topic that wonders "why HTC is overlooked".
You want to find the best flight sim, find the one that everyone bashes from time to time but keeps playing, I have no doubt that AH will be around as long Hitech, Pyro and gang want it to be and they will run it as they see fit (as it should be) I hope there will be some more addtions to WWI but if not I still will go there for my WWI fix and thank HTC for providing another choice for ZERO extra cost.

You said it best with HiTech and the guys adding on and giving more for free. Now I know I have drawn some people in here just off my Facebook account because I posted a link to it. Also with all the other WW2 flight sims are İou able to submit skins for ingame use? Are you able to build terrains and submit them for ingame use?? Let the haters and dweebs answer those questions.
My hats off to hitech and the gents at Hitech Creations and may I have many more years of addiction to being shot down, blown up and generally pwnd by everyone.

" Why is AH Always overlooked?" Is an over generalization. YOU DO RELIZE... we are all here. So its impossible to be always overlooked.

I don't get why more people are not playing in the WW1 , I'm no fighter pilot, really crap at it; but I love how up close and personal the dogfighting is. I tell my squadies that for me its like being a kid again wondering what happens if I stick my fingers in a fan....it hurts ...but is so dam fun.
and I can't help keep doing it again and _gain! .....sorry just lost my left hand pinky tip!

WW I for me has been a NOOB experience all over! lol....If I even get close to a WW I plane, I suck in the WW II arenas for two weeks!!...I keep trying the "BatfinkV" vertical escape in a CHOG....it no workee. I just still suck to much to make the easy transition back and forth I guess. It is a lot of fun though.

speaking of which.. Does HTC and more specifically AH2 have a facebook page? Wouldn't be a bad idea to have screens links to vids etc, Plus helps the search/spam friends factor.
Probably do just haven't looked.
-
I've often wondered about this as well. I used to get a magazine called "PC Pilot" (or "Computer Pilot, not sure which...), and I remember they ran a series on virtual air combat. IIRC, the only sims they mentioned were IL2 and Warbirds, as well as self cotained games like MS Combat FLight Sim, etc. I always got the feeling that they werre going out of their way to NOT mention Aces High in the different gaming magazines I've seen. I figured that maybe Hi Tech had pi$$ed off the wrong people in the industry or something.
As to what got me into the game, my brother had been telling me about it for years and that I should join, but I never got around to it. Then one evening I saw an AH commercial on the Aviation history Channel and was amazed! Called my brother and said "is that the game you've been telling me about?" Been hooked ever since. But lately (2010?) it seems like I haven't seen any of the commercials for a long time. Is it just me, or have they not been airing recently?

Just gave the AHII Wikipedia page a facelift (read: new face).

saw one on the military channel a few weeks ago i think. but yeah in the early 2000s they were on like every commercial break during Flight/ww2 documentaries it seemed.

Believe me, AH is NOT overlooked. But as 1 poster has mentioned it will attract some less than desirable attention due to it's level of success relative to others regardless of the variables involved, whether perception or fact is the make up of the "looking glass" being used to evaluate the product. But even this is proof that AH is more well known than we may think it is.
:D
The sad thing for me concerning FA is that I couldn't afford to keep paying the subscriptions to help the game develop. I had tried FA years back & liked what I saw & the potential that was there but I couldn't afford to promote 3 online flight sims so I had to make a decision.
Sorry FA folks. I really liked the game.
I hope that you find what you're looking for here in AH or elsewhere.

Well a little History,FA was never advertised to be a flight Sim game,in fact it started 13 years ago on the zone as an arcade game, from there it just evolved.Fa is more than a game but a community,we just had our2010 convention in FL where I got to meet RET Fuzz (cool dude) and other players. Our game still has some rooms with arcade physics and the most popular TC (total combat) at level 5,then we had rooms that catered to the Historical crowed where we had input into the history of the rooms ,like Aces over Africa, Italy 1944, Bad weather Normandy these are all played at level 7, then for the total Sims guys we duplicated some rooms to cockpit view and level 10 ,aka Flight sim.The biggest challenge to the FA player is the resistance to change, like all cockpit view, and no padlock to enemy, also in our most popular rooms we play a style that matches 5 country's against each other to take the whole map.So you would have an all SU team flying against an all JP plane set, not all planes for all sides.
I played last night in AH and had a blast 3 buff kills 3 fighter kills and hauled troops oh yeah when i asked "hey now that my chute has landed in the middle of nowhere and I have a 45cal in my hand how do I get a plane "oh just hit alt F4 nice pick on the noob lol. FA guys will do fine here, and just my opinion not many will go to War birds.
so I will see all you killers in the sky's, and to my bud RET Fuzz great to meet you sir ~S~ FA style.

Sorry, but I came over from another online game when suggested after they closed (along with WW2 Online), and been here ever since 1999 or so. No offense to Fighter Aces ( I know the feeling of something that you enjoy, slipping away) but I haven't looked any further for my online fix. I hope that AH will help to fill the void and welcome to all, the more the merrier. My preference being the Axis versus Allies Arena, be sure to check out the custom enhancements that players have created for even more enjoyment.
Overlooked? or undergreased the greedy palms that do the write ups? I'm with you, it seems that WW2 fighter combat is much more player intense, than any other flight/ game simulation, and I think we know who does a demgood job at it.
(drunken post # I forget** check under sig I guess)

I remember looking at the FA 2.5 squadron leaderboard. I thought myself pretty decent so I went from the top. BANZAI were number one but I thought to myself I'm not being no Japanese lover. Second on that list were TEA (The Empire Aces) the rest is as they say history!!

I loled at the Alt+F4, I hate those people.

Well I did FA and AH combined for awile but I prefer AH due to the comardarie here and a lot less D/L of arenas.
Just a little hint when someone tells you to hit Alt F4, tell them you have a better way that they should try. Tell them to hit the power button on their comp to get the same effect.
BTW we need to stop referring to the gentlemen and ladies coming from FA as FA pilots. Let me be the first to say to them welcome aboard new AH pilots, wether they be commrades or enemy and btw AH salutes like this <S> or in the boards :salute

... I'd be suspect of any game that offered 2 free months, it is indicative of an company's end stage marketing ploy....
I agree fully, but what do you call a company, which beats the 2 months by another 1 1/2 months for a total of 14 weeks?
Just came to think of it, that the statement of yours, Delirium, was a bit superficial, or was it even meant aggressive?
But against whom? ;)

Because the market for a game like this is tiny on scale of things compared to the more mainstream PC and Console games. Most game publishers now aren't interested in publishing PC only titles it has to be multi platform as that's where the bucks are.
Even MS have pulled the longest running of them all "Flight Simulator". Market too small to justify cost for return etc compared to just pumping out some new XBox titles.
Plus another aspect for AH even though it's muti player and there have been some improvments over the years, the graphics look very dated. Even though the gameplay itself might be as good as it is, the eye candy for anyone new is first impression and compared to what any previous flight sim someone might be use to, trying this out it's like staring back into the 90s in some regards.
A Lot more games have bigger and better multi player support then they use to, the likes of ARMA2 and BF series adds more competition for anyones spare time and combat fix..
Basically for PC's market and sales there is WoW and Sims. Everything else is muti platform.
I commend HT team for all the work they have done, it's certainly been able to hold my interest off and on for the last 10 years.. But at moment that's leaning more towards off just due to my own commitments and free time nothing due to this or latest changes etc.. Though drop in numbers for MA during Aussie evenings is more noticeable lately than previous years or maybe it's just been a quiet few months, dunno.
Unfortunatly the market for this in it's current format is very small and always has been. Other then for when AW crowd joined I don't think the growth has ever really been there going by numbers in the MA's over the years. Always around the same.

When is the last time you played AH? Especially since you made this outrageous claim:
Many people over there are articulating themselves in their Bulletin Bords arrogantly and agressively even before a reasonable argument tries to find majorities.
I don´t know why this occurs. In other circumstances of life I would rate such behaviour as precarious, born from inferiority complex or even childish.
Keep up your intelligence gathering and play "whack-a-mole" elsewhere please. Place Thorsim on a pedestal for mastering "non-sequitur posting". He tried like the dickens to "stymie HiTech and others", but never made a single substantiated claim.

By beeing so aggressive, are you trying to prove, that my point you quoted (as above) is correct?

I found ah2 from the history channel commercials.
I found out about AH from playing WB for the last 8 months. I checked it out about 5 days ago and canceled my subscription to WB's.
Not many people know about AH I guess. When i purchased my new video card a couple days ago the person behind the counter asked me what I wanted it for. I told him gaming. He said what game. I told him Aces High. He responded " Is that a card game" I laughed and informed him of what it was. He was a young kid of about 25 yrs. I was shocked he didn't know. I guess i should not have been.
