Not trying to get too deep here, but it seems like this topic has been brought up
quite a bit these days, between my friends and family members.
Just wondered what your opinions were on 12.21.2012.
My opinion is simple. I hope it ain't true.

no way im gonna die on my 32nd birfday. now that i've made it past 30 nature has another 85 cruel years in store for me, i just know it :old:

So you think a culture that never had the wherewithal to develop the wheel could predict the end of civilization? Sheeesus. Dumb people everywhere- frankly I'm surprised you survived Y2K.

not sure what the wheel has to do with a civilization having a massive knowledge of astronomy but...if you say so. seems to me any civilization that could cut stone with the same precision as modern machinery and build massive structures without the the wheel, had to have some knowledge beyond your understanding.

I am with Spikes,..uh,...in an idea sort of way, not in a man-love sort of way. :)
Have to figure it this way. If it is going to end, there is nothing I can do about it, so why waste precious time worrying about it? If it is not going to end, then I will not have wasted precious time worrying about it.
All I have to worry about is the backlash from the first sentence of this post. Now, THAT IS something to worry about.
I don't think you can beat that. :)

Uh, the world can't end on a good movie year. Not when Joss Whedon is so close to getting his oscar. :)

+1 and the whole thing is blown out of proportion.

I plan on living past 2012.........But, If I die? you'll hear no complaints out of me.

I plan on living past 2012 as well, even if it's on another planet. Plenty of room in the TARDIS, y'all.
-
We are planning on having a "2012 party" in my neighborhood. I'm gonna be up in the plane waiting for the end of the world.
"Do you see it yet?"
"No."

Its all moot anyways. The Maya didn't predict the end of the world at that date, they simply stopped bothering to calculate their calendar out any further due to it being, oh, 1300ish years away. Their calendar was more accurate than ours, but there were no apocalyptic bits to it. That stuff was added on recently by bad fiction writers.
Somebody actually went down to the Yucatan area of Mexico and asked a Mayan priest if the world was going to end in 2012. As I recall he thought the question was absurd and that it was stupid to think the world was going to end.

If it happens you wont have to worry about it. so why worry.
I think its BS myself.
-
Well I don't think we have anything to worry about for qt least another 30-35 years at least. That is when the current crop of teens (kids same age as my oldest who is 14) get to the same age as us right now and they start seeing the hopelessness that we all left them with financially. Then we really have to worry about the end because they may kill us all.

The Mayan Calendar was miscalculated by 200 years.

Biblical stories of the ending and the apocalypse have always shown MANY dates and times when the world should be doomed, the next being May 21st.

What he said. I hope it starts at my front door. The current sytem of whats valuable is skewed. We need to try something different because it doesn't work. I think the system has already started to collapse and hope it continues. Other wise we would end up like this......

I've studied this in depth; using the waxing and waning of the moons, the alignment of the stars, and the geo forces of the earth. I've concluded the Mayans need a new calendar.
-
What the heck are you guys Smokin??
The same thing will happen at the end of the current cycle of the Mayan Calendar that happens at the end of the cycle of our current Calendar.... the current cycle will end and a new cycle will begin. Did the world end at Midnight December 31st 2010? NO.... The year 2011 began. This is nothing more than Global Hype being promoted by people that are trying to sell their books on the topic.
Makes for humorous discussion over a few brewski's... nothing more.

Simple answer really. Anyone that thinks that people writing on stone some how predicted the end of the world should put an end to it now and leave the rest of us alone. It is already too crowded on this planet anyway. Please apply this to people even thinking for a second that it could be true.
Thank you for your consideration :bhead

And the very best stone cutters built Twainaku, in present day Bolivia. Their work was unique because they actually angled their stone (instead of just stacking up blocks) which showed an advanced knowledge of geometry. They also had no written language.

If 2012 is the end of the world, it will likely be due to a man made apocalypse and not a natural one.
I can imagine a greater power shaking the jar to see 'if we will fight'.

The world has been ending multiple times in history and each time they've been wrong.
Some people sold their houses, quit their jobs and quivered around churches 100% sure the end was nigh. Some committed mass suicide. You gonna repeat their mistakes?
-
Highly doubt the world will end, but the people who think it will end Dec. 21, 2012 may be something we have to worry about. There is nothing more terrifying than human stupidity. Add a fear factor in there and humans will begin to act like animals.
-
Who cares if it does end? I mean really, what ya gunna do about it? Write a strong letter of complaint to someone? Protest? Sue the solar system?
I am 99.9% certain it won't end next year. But even so, I'm living each day like it may do at any moment.

:lol Dave, that is so true.

The notion that the alignment of the planets will screw everything up is just so ridiculous that I can't even entertain it. Your car has a bigger effect on you RIGHT NOW than all of the planets would if they were perfectly aligned. It's the sort of conjecture that makes me hate MOVIES let alone anything real.
Plus, 2012 is the "end" of the mayan calandar in the same way that "999" is the last year. So, <shrugs> personally I don't think it will happen, but I also don't worry about it either.

Hmmmm!
2012 Nostradamus predictions have gained a lot of popularity, firstly because the year is coming closer and secondly his predictions seem to match predictions from other sources like the bible, Mayan and Gnostic texts and so on. You must also keep in mind that Nostradamus predictions are never clear cut and he writes symbolically and hence different people interpret these symbols in various ways. Although this is the case, many of his predictions have been interpreted correctly regarding the second world war, Hitler and so on. This makes 2012 Nostradamus predictions even more interesting to read as most people feel that they can be highly accurate.
Nostradamus Theory
2012 Nostradamus predictions paint a bleak picture of massive destruction and havoc brought about by a comet. It is not clear whether this comet will strike the earth or will pass very close to our planet, causing massive earthquakes and other cataclysmic occurrences. But all interpreters of his quatrains are united on the opinion that it will be a comet which will come somewhere in December 2012. Nostradamus writes in one of his quatrains – “In the sky will be seen a great fire dragging a trail of sparks”. This line clearly suggest a comet and many are of the opinion that it will be very big in size. Certain interpreters put the size to be just a little less than the planet Jupiter, and if such a comet passes close to the earth the effect of its gravity will cause the oceans to rise and also give rise to earthquakes.
Another theory is that the even though the comet will pass close to the earth it might cause an asteroid to shift course and impact the earth. Such an impact will be the size of several atomic bombs and will cause massive destruction. Some predict that the superpowers of the world will send atomic missiles to break this asteroid in space, but still there will be a shower of hail and fire from its fragments.
For 2012 Nostradamus also suggest that because of the massive destruction caused by the comet there will be widespread anarchy and certain nations can take advantage and plunge the world into a third World War. One of the quatrains says – “King of terror shall come from the sky. He will bring to life the King of Mongols.” This line has been interpreted that after the coming of the comet China will gain prominence and might start attacking countries to gain supremacy.
2012 Nostradamus predictions also gives an indication of the fate of certain nations, and how long the comet will be seen in the skies. He mentions – “The Great Star will blaze for Seven days” meaning the comet will be very near the earth for seven days and nights. Further he says – “The Huge dog will howl at night, when the great pontiff will change lands”. The great dog is taken to be the United Kingdom by many interpreters, and the line suggests its destruction. The pontiff is taken to be the pope and hence Rome too will be destroyed.

In regards to Hitler and the second world war, if he was in some sort of psychic trance, predicting things etc., Why say Hister? If he had knowledge of what was going to happen, why not just say Hitler?
Just like any of the other secret codes, they remain vague.

Wouldn't work. You would only be able to travel back in time to the point in which you invented time travel. IE, if you invented it yesterday, you would only be able to travel back to that point. At least, that's one of the theories. I suppose one could argue that if time travel was possible, one could also argue that they could go back to any period they wanted.

wrong :) the theories state that traveling back in time will never be possible, only forward time travel could ever be possible.

What you are talking about sounds like a Tipler Cylinder. But Stephen Hawking pretty much disproved the possibility of a Tipler Cylinder, because it requires either an infinitely long cylinder or negative energy for the math to work.

The current living decendants of Mayan's who act a shamans were asked about the end of the world prophesy predicted by the calendar. Their response was we westerners are reading into the calendar what we want to see in it. In their culture when the current calendar reaches the end of its cycle you just start a new cycle. Their cycles are longer than ours.

But is there an increase in frequency or severity of natural events? Or is it that the cycle is so long that history does not record far enough into the past? Or is it that there really isn't an increase in frequency or severity? Perhaps it is all a function of a media that needs ever increasing calamity to satisfy present day sensationalism. Or perhaps a certain subset of folks with their own agenda needs there to be an increase to validate them, so the tend to forget that there used to be things like super volcanoes etc.
Just saying...

Probably the most profound point brought forth thus far. How can we prove anything based on 150-200 years of meteorologicals observations when the whole earth system is about 4.5 billions years old ( that's 4 500 000 000 vs 200) . Some would call it not seeing farther than the end of our nose. We simply don't have enough data to prove or disprove anything. Every time there's somekind of natural disaster people are surprised. I even bet some would not see the next earthquake in california coming even tough the whole region is sitting on a fail line thousand of miles long.... Back here in Quebec, this past winter everytime we received more than 10 inches of snow it was like it was the first time it snowed in the media. I got news for everyone : there have always been hurricane and there will be in the future. Along with earthquake, typhoon, forest fire, snow, hail, rain, tornadoes, tsunami, thunder, lightning, drought, flood, volcanic eruption, solar flare, avalanches, meteor impact and what else. It's bad when it happen in populated area but that's how it is.

1) Mayan Calender
2) Chinese Calender
3) Supposed to be strongest Solar flares ever recorded in Summer of 2012.

While you bring up a very valid point, there is one thing I think you forgot to consider. Our earth is riddled with all kinds of geographical evidence of natural disasters, climate change, and other events that can be found in rocks, dirt, sand, and even in ice. While these evidences don't necessarily confirm a future prediction, we can use them to map out a trend of events in history. We can only guess as to what will happen in the future. But if we know what happened in the past, we could make a general prediction of what might happen later.
-
my geology professor gave us this example.......if the earth was a football field, the first 99.85 yards of the field was uninhabited by man. we get less than a foot. in these terms, man plays on a field of inches, and the world is measured in yards. we have no idea whats going to happen. none. we don't even have a clear idea of what's happened in the past. carbon dating is our best method, and that's only good for going back 50,000 years. for anyone to think any of these predictions will come to pass is just ignorant. man has been making these asenine predictions of the end of days since the dawn of the spoken word. no, fellas, the world is not ending. :D
P.S. if the world DOES end on 12-21-2012, it will be in the form of a self-fulfilling prophecy. people will be so bent on the earth ending that day, their panic and the ensueing chaos very well could be the end of mankind, given the kinds of toys we have built for ourselves to play with.

I personally don't think the world is going to end in that day. I have no doubt eventually it will end, but not anytime soon.
Like someone else pointed out, the Mayans couldn't even predict their own culture being wiped out eventually, let alone when the world is. I am strong believer that they ended their calendar on that particular day. Plus if you think about, that culture believed in several type of gods and even the sun was eclipsed, they thought it was another god doing it.
I have to call balony on the whole ending in 2012 theory.
-
I did consider it, but it was hardly relevant to my argumentation. Sure Earth is riddled with geological signs of past catastrophic event. The last quake in Japan and ensuing tsunami will surly leave a mark in the sediment deposited around the same time on the coasts of the pacific. We know it happened, We know it happens and we can guess without too much of a doubt that it will happen again. I will not be holding my breath on 12.21.12 tough. Not enough scientifc evidence to support any of these apocalypse hypothesis(I will not say theories as the word implies that it's something that's been tested and proven to work). Only the gibberish written by a man living in an age when most men tought the sun orbited earth. Or a calendar created by mayans thousands of years back (and a very precise one at that) to keep track of when to plant crop and their deity's holidays. If you write something on a stone you must stop when you run out of space. The only thing that keeps them from updating it is propbably the fact that the guy who make it it is dead.

Great book. Anyway, doomsday was to be man-made. To be lined up directly with the theory of 2012 I think. I read it years ago.

Extrapolate into the future what the outcomes will be if the current trends continue and/or increase.
Work with the best available data. Stating that there may be more unknown data is a flimsy (at best) method to support a position.

Late April tornado outbreak sets new record, Weather Service says
(CNN) -- At least 178 tornadoes were part of the severe weather that raked the Midwest and South April 27-28, making it the largest recorded tornado outbreak in U.S. history, the National Weather Service said Wednesday.
The number of twisters surpassed the previous record of 148 tornadoes in the April 3-4, 1974, outbreak, the Weather Service said.
The April 27-28 outbreak caused 327 deaths, making it the third deadliest tornado outbreak in U.S. history, behind outbreaks in 1925 and 1932, with 747 deaths and 332 deaths respectively.

Flood Unease Builds South Along the Mississippi
......Memphis, where the Mississippi was at 43.8 feet Tuesday, could see a near-record crest of 48 feet on May 11, just inches lower than the record of 48.7 feet in 1937.
Forecasters say the river could break records in Mississippi set during catastrophic floods in 1927 and a decade later. Gov. Haley Barbour started warning people last week to take precautions if they live in flood-prone areas near the river, comparing the swell of water moving downriver to a pig moving through a python.
With tornados and the threat of rivers gone wild, "we're making a lot of unfortunate history here in Mississippi in April and May," said Jeff Rent, a Mississippi Emergency Management Agency spokesman........

Japan earthquake becomes fifth-strongest since 1900
The strongest quake occurred in Chile in 1960 and measured magnitude 9.5. The devastating quake in Japan supplants the 2010 Chile quake, which at 8.8 was fifth-strongest. The deadliest quake in history is believed to have been an 8.0 temblor in Shaanxi, China, in 1556, in which 830,000 are believed to have died.
March 11, 2011|By Michael Muskal | Los Angeles Times
When the earth shook off the coast of Japan on Friday, the magnitude 8.9 quake became the fifth strongest since 1900.
According to records kept by the U.S. Geological Survey's Earthquake Information Center, the largest quake remains the one in Chile in 1960 that measured 9.5. That was followed by the 1964 quake in Prince William Sound, Alaska, at 9.2; the 2004 quake off of Sumatra, at 9.1; and the 1952 quake in Kamchatka, a peninsula in eastern Russia near the Bering Sea, at 9.0......

Stating that you can predict the long term outcome of a complicated system like the earth atmospheric/hydrologic system is flimsy (at best), and probably a bit arrogant from us as a race. These record flood and whatnot are merely record in relations to what WE have experienced and measured in the recent past. We hold no (really good, only hints and bits of) data regarding the last 4 billions or so years. And I must also say that the event are fairly localised as many place around the world that are not at any particular risk have not (quite surprisingly) experienced any form of out of the ordinary event. And if I might add, that would be very surprising the Mississippi didn't flood from time to time (especially in spring) since it has shown a propency to do so in the past. Let's take another example, in 2005 with the hurricane, the storm tide did flood lands that were merely a few feet from sea level. The catastrophe is undisputable. But that's hardly something that was totally unexpected. They even had digs in place so someone knew of the risk. That hurricane's storm surge and a combination of factors simply overwhelmed the defense the city put in place to keep the sea out of it's street. There has been tornadoes in the midwest before ,in fact, in the article you quote, it says that 2 times before the outbreak has been deadliest. The strenght of the japanese quake is related to the amount of tension accumulated and released when the tectonics plates moved and cannot be correlated with any trends since the tension in that fault line began to build probably thousands of years back. And let me make a prediction : San-Fransisco will probably experience a major quake in the coming century. Last one was in 1906. And before that we don't know for sure (maybe someone can correct me here). There will be death and major disruption of human activity. And yet someone WILL be surprised when it happens even tough it practically sitting on the San-Andreas fault. Heck, if I write it in quatrain I'm sure someone will vow me a cult.

"Increases in frequency and severity" is the pattern to look for.
In order to maximize pattern correlations many data points must be sampled. Best case is all data available.
Stating that there are possibly many more unknown data points in the past doesn't necessarily invalidate the current analysis of the available data pool!
Of course to get the widest possible number of data points requires "butt-time"--time in the chair spent researching.
Also this skill can come in handy:
Pattern recognition intelligence score
http://www.intelligencetest.com/report/pattern-recognition.htm
Out of all mental abilities this type of intelligence is said to have the highest correlation with the general intelligence factor, g. This is primarily because pattern recognition is the ability to see order in a chaotic environment; the primary condition for life. Patterns can be found in ideas, words, symbols and images and pattern recognition is unlearned and untrainable. Pattern recognition is a key determinant of your potential in logical, verbal, numerical and spatial abilities. It is essential for reasoning because your capacity to think logically is based on your perception of the logic around you. Your pattern recognition skills are expressed verbally through your long term exposure to language and your mathematical and spatial abilities are based on your perception of numerical data and 3D objects.

People think there is more disasters than ever before and that they are therefore not normal... WRONG!
The increasing amount of media coverage and sources of information or detectors/satellites means that more disasters will be talked about. The massive fish and bird deaths this winter is just the perfect example of that: It has always happened for hundreds of years (If not millions)! but no one ever heard anything about it, so they freak out.
Stop freaking out!
Nibiru doesnt exist
Sun will be aligned with center of galaxy? So what? Happens every year.
Planet alignment? wow... get the program "Stellarium" and see for yourself.
Increased earthquake rates? wow... see the USGS website for yourself.
Climate change? Pff... nothing compared to the last ice age or super volcano.
What else... Oh yeah! Solar flares... don't fly in commercial flights that go over the poles after an earth directed flare... simple as that.
Humm... magnetic pole shift? Unlikely.
Geographic pole shift? Axial Precession and Milankovitch Cycles...

The Earth will end, yes it surely will....
In about four point five billion years as Sol consumes the last of its hydrogen and swells into a red giant, incinerating the inner planets.
I don't think this eventuality really matters to Homo Sapiens Sapiens.

Your own gerbil cage .......wheres the wheel?
NASA has said that there will be a polar flip in the sun. This causes solar flares. Every 100 years we should see major eruptions. We are currently at 150 years from the last major eruption from the sun. This last major eruption fried telegraph wires. At that point our society was not on a grid. It did not rely on everything being plugged into a grid for sustainable life. Now our culture is dependant on a grid that is vulnerable to an EMP. If this were to happen on a larger scale it would be just like somebody temporarily destroying our power infrastructure in an instant. It happened in Québec not to long ago and in the past 20 years it has happened at several different locations and these were not even considered dangerous. Instead of it knocking out a city that could be fixed in a few days or weeks imagine if it effected 1/2 or more North America. You can’t fix that quickly.
NASA says this is likely to happen. They just do not say how bad it is going to be. I hope it isn't too serious, but what if it is a big one?

Almost like mother earth is a dog and is trying to get rid of flea's (us) Shaking, scratching, biting, (Earthquakes, hurricanes, tornado's) etc. Perhaps we have expanded our population too high for what she can comfortably carry?
Can anyone definitively say we have had this many people in the world before?
Who knows what "could" happen.

I'm prepared as well as I can be for the unexpected.

You are correct stating that pattern recognition is, undisputably, a vital component of life. And I also understand when you state that we have to work with what data we have available. Altough, the point, I think, you fail to consider is that too small of a sample can bring one to draw flawed conclusion. Even among the scientific community there is no consensus about the warming trend we seem to be experiencing and it's effect on weather. When one say that the climate is changing, the underlying assumption is that it is changing in regard with some data sample. The only reliable (and somewhat comlete) record we have available date back from 1800-1850. Saying that climate is changing in regard to these records is true. But that leads us to assume that the climate was always like that and was very stable, an assumption proven wrong by scientific research and earlier incomplete or indirect record. There was a period spanning between the 16th century up to the 19th century, dubbed the 'little ice age' where temperature were much cooler than today's . We have records in the form of some painting dating from the 17th century, that shows the Thames in London to be completely frozen over. Something not seen for a very long time now. And before that there was the 'medieval warm period' spanning roughly from 950 AD to 1250 AD.
And speaking about patern :
This is a graphical depiction of the measurment taken from the Vostok ice core in Antartica. It span for about 450k years. Today being on the left most. The trend I see in this is a very cyclic and unstable temperature patern with a frenquency of nearly 100 000 years. One could assume that this is the pattern that repeat itself over and over, and yet we must not fall into this trap, as if one could see the temperature curve over the last 4 billions of years, that another, larger in scall, patern emerge (tough I must admit that's a complete assumption on my part here but given the pattern...). Of course this alone gives us no idea of what were the effect of the temperature change on the weather system, but it is thought that warmer temperature at the equator makes for stronger weather system as the heat seek to distribute itself evenly around the globe.
I'll conced one point to you. It is quite possible that, in the longer term, climate change does cause the end of the human world. That does not, in any way, imply that the earth will be devoid of life. In the mean time, we have to learn to cope with the increasing effect weather have on human activity. That does not mean the weather is getting harsher. It means that there are more people and activity that are affected by it. Back 100 years who would have cared for a solar flare as there was no big scale network to be knocked down by it. Back 400 years, the native-american were probably not crazy enough to build their home right in the middle of the tornadoes alley. And they probably moved away when the Mississipi menaced of flooding the surrounding land. These are a few, probably bad and refutable, example I found.

Really the only thing that makes me worry about it is the Mayan calender is 100% correct. And the fact that they just STOPPED on that day. Also polar shifting is said to be due any day now, and the volcano under Yellowstone national park that causes old faithful to spew water is due to erupt any day. And its a super volcano. Its also the specific day that every planet in the universe aligns up in a straight line. And they say something could happen because of that

ever hear of Krakatoa? largest eruption, loudest sound in recored human history. late 1800's. the world didn't end because of it, nor will it end.
I never represented that the world will "end".
(Personally I believe the world has at least 1000 years remaining. I won't say why in this venue because I don't want to be the one that triggers this thread being locked.)
Let me clarify my position: We are seeing more frequent and/or intense "natural" events occurring right before our eyes. (I'm not including the sociological /cultural accelerating changes because there are those that will claim the "self-fulfilling prophesies" card. Regardless, this vector of phenomena is still manifest. Do your own research...I'll leave it at that.)
quote: ".... there is NO WAY we could ever form any sort of accurate long term weather or world predictor. like its been stated, we have only been recording weather and earthquakes for what, 150 years? we'll say 200 to be fair. what about the 4.5 billion and change before that?! never had giant hurricanes before that? tornadoes didnt rage across the plains? you REALLY think the world never saw a 9.5 earthquake? honestly, you think giant tsunamis never raced acrossed the worlds oceans before??"....
Again, we see the "since there is data/events we don't know about it must mean that current data is invalid" argument.
This is invalid logic: Lack of evidence is NOT evidence.!
quote: "...this is all NATURAL, all happened because SCIENCE dictates that is MUST happen, not because some antiquated culture that went extinct a 1000 years ago says it will....."
To set the record straight...I don't subscribe to antiquated culture's prophecies, my position as represented here is based on "increase of frequencies and/or intensities" of "natural" events.
As a side note: I don't think I've actually run across someone that claims that things "happen because SCIENCE dictates that it MUST happen".
quote: "if you want to do research, look up mega-thrust earthquakes. you'll understand why we have massive quakes. has nothing to do with the mayans, i assure you ;
No need for me to look up "mega-thrust earthquakes". I have a fair understanding of plate-techtonic dynamics.
My position relates to "increases of frequency and/or intensities" of natural detrimental events such as earthquakes and how these indicates a discernible pattern not why massive quakes occur.
I assure you that I agree none of this has anything to do with the mayans.
Meanwhile, here are a few more data point events to enter into your pattern matrix for those keeping track: ;)
Magnitude 7.1 earthquake rattles coast of Japan
A magnitude 7.1 earthquake rattled the northeastern coast of Japan Monday evening, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
Japan's Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning, predicting a potential wave of two-meters in Miyagi, Fukushima and Chiba and Ibaraki prefectures.
The quake was centered about 164 kilometers (101 miles) northeast of Tokyo, according to the USGS. Residents in Tokyo felt the jolts.

Magnitude 6.7 earthquake strikes Mexico
An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.7 hit the region of Veracruz, Mexico, the U.S. Geological Survey reported Thursday. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2011/04/07/magnitude-6-7-earthquake-strikes-mexico/?iref=obinsite
Take note of the perfunctory statement included in this article letting us know that these events are "random" with nothing to worry about....
Moderate earthquakes strike Mexico, Alaska, Japan
Moderate earthquakes struck in Mexico, Alaska and Japan on Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
The first earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.8 struck in southwestern Mexico, in the state of Guerrero, according to the USGS. The Mexican Seismological Service put the magnitude at 5.5. Many people exited the buildings they were in, but there were no immediate reports of damage.
Then a 5.8 magnitude earthquake was recorded on the Alaska Peninsula 14 miles south of Sand Point, Alaska and 573 miles southwest of Anchorage.
It was followed by a 6.1 earthquake that hit below the sea floor off the coast of the Japanese island of Honshu Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The depth of the quake is 15 miles, the USGS said and the epicenter is located 172 miles from Sendai, near the same zone as the aftershocks that followed the March 11 quake. The Japan Meteorological Agency has so far not released any tsunami warning.
Julie Dutton, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Golden, Colorado, said that while it makes some people wary to see several moderate earthquakes (ones that register between 5.0 and 5.9) occurring in such a short time span, it isn't out of the norm.
"It's not something that occurs every day, but this is definitely not something we haven't seen before, or that we won't see again," she told CNN. "Earthquakes are kind of cyclic and sometimes it'll just happen that you'll have an influx of earthquakes around the same time. Other times they'll just be spread out."
For example, Dutton said there was a day in the past week where there were 12 moderate earthquakes recorded in one day. She acknowledged that on that day, they were on the lower part of the moderate scale, and that these three were a bit higher, but said it was certainly not something to be overly concerned about.
"We've had five or six of them every day for the last week, so it's definitely not something that we're concerned about," she said. "Its just pretty random at this point and it just happened that a bunch were higher today."

PuppetZ, you've made some thoughtful points that deserve a good response..unfortunately the bed calls followed by an early work report time..I'll do my best to get back to you at a later date. :salute

http://www.johnstonsarchive.net/other/quake1.html
This little website compile data from the USGS about quake worldwide since 1970. The numbers do show an increase in the frequency of mid strength quake.
But as this graphic show, it looks like earth is was experiencing a fairly low level of seismic activity throughout the 80's and the 90's. The 7 years average (grey line) energy released getting to a century low between 1980 and 1990. One could see the increased activity as a consequence of this low. Fault line all around the globe were inactive on a large scall. Tensions accumulated through these years is released at some point. Which appears to be now. Yet again, the consequence are centered on how these events disrupt human activity and not the capability of the globe to sustain life.
Also
I'm not including the sociological /cultural accelerating changes because there are those that will claim the "self-fulfilling prophesies" card. Regardless, this vector of phenomena is still manifest. Do your own research...I'll leave it at that.
I'm in total agreement with that statement.
The danger doesn't lie in the natural disaster itself, but in how people react to it. People are always afraid of what they don't understand... and someone with a lot of common sense said one time : the IQ of a crowd is inversely proportional to the number of people constituting it.

The Mayan Calender, Nostradamus, The book of revelations. Oh yeah death is certain. It will be the super volcano that erupts in Yellowstone that ends all........except if we have a polar shift before that. I'm convinced that we all will die miserably, if not in 2012,2013,2014,2015,etc,etc. I honestly think we're just not paying enough taxes.
I do have land for sale that is guaranteed to survive the end times, can you afford it?
you can reach me at: WWW.Saplandsrealtors.com

Yellowstone is not the only super volcano (caldera (not exactly the same but whatever)) on this earth... there are 5 others. But everyone talks about Yellowstone because its located in the USA.
