The Mayan Calendar was miscalculated by 200 years.

The Polar Switches has never led to a mass extinction.. EVER.

Biblical stories of the ending and the apocalypse have always shown MANY dates and times when the world should be doomed, the next being May 21st.

Any others? :headscratch:

They call it "common sense", then why is it so uncommon?

But is there an increase in frequency or severity of natural events?  Or is it that the cycle is so long that history does not record far enough into the past?

Probably the most profound point brought forth thus far. How can we prove anything based on 150-200 years of meteorologicals observations when the whole earth system is about 4.5 billions years old ( that's 4 500 000 000 vs 200) . Some would call it not seeing farther than the end of our nose. We simply don't have enough data to prove or disprove anything. Every time there's somekind of natural disaster people are surprised. I even bet some would not see the next earthquake in california coming even tough the whole region is sitting on a fail line thousand of miles long.... Back here in Quebec, this past winter everytime we received more than 10 inches of snow it was like it was the first time it snowed in the media. I got news for everyone : there have always been hurricane and there will be in the future. Along with earthquake, typhoon, forest fire, snow, hail, rain, tornadoes, tsunami, thunder, lightning, drought, flood, volcanic eruption, solar flare, avalanches, meteor impact and what else. It's bad when it happen in populated area but that's how it is.

There are a few events in 2012 that the Doomdayers are worried about.
1) Mayan Calender
2) Chinese Calender
3) Supposed to be strongest Solar flares ever recorded in Summer of 2012.
4) Sun at Center of Galaxy?
If you wake up 22 December 2012 you know once again, they flubbed it.

Who has the pic of the 2 myans making the calendar with them saying running out of room at 2012 will freak someone out someday?

Even the Mayans were wrong, their world ended in ~1550, when the Spanish took it from them.

While you bring up a very valid point, there is one thing I think you forgot to consider. Our earth is riddled with all kinds of geographical evidence of natural disasters, climate change, and other events that can be found in rocks, dirt, sand, and even in ice. While these evidences don't necessarily confirm a future prediction, we can use them to map out a trend of events in history. We can only guess as to what will happen in the future. But if we know what happened in the past, we could make a general prediction of what might happen later.

my geology professor gave us this example.......if the earth was a football field, the first 99.85 yards of the field was uninhabited by man.  we get less than a foot.   in these terms, man plays on a field of inches, and the world is measured in yards.  we have no idea whats going to happen.   none.  we don't even have a clear idea of what's happened in the past.   carbon dating is our best method, and that's only good for going back 50,000 years.  for anyone to think any of these predictions will come to pass is just ignorant.  man has been making these asenine predictions of the end of days since the dawn of the spoken word.   no, fellas, the world is not ending.     :D

P.S. if the world DOES end on 12-21-2012, it will be in the form of a self-fulfilling prophecy.   people will be so bent on the earth ending that day, their panic and the ensueing chaos very well could be the end of mankind, given the kinds of toys we have built for ourselves to play with.
