Joking aside, what do you do to earn money? whats the history behind it? do you enjoy doing it? or do you like the result of it? (money) Feel free to post pictures!
to the point, I'm a kiddo and getting ready for college the way i make money as of now is by working at a paintball Field called jungle island. My boss is a Gunnery Sargent. My supervisor is a national guard medic. I absolutely love it, its incredibly fun and i love to help the new players get into it. Many of my peers want my job and i don't blame them.

Whines? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDnivh5Odfk&feature=related ;) I'm actually preparing to go to college to become a mechanical engineer and then to school for auto mechanics or (from what i see you post) a technician. That or a aircraft mechanic. auto runs Strong in some parts of my family though.
-
I fly airplanes for a living. At least until April. Then I'll steer unmanned aerial weapons systems from a lazy-boy on the ground.
Interestingly enough, although I trained for years to kill people and break stuff with an F-15E, I'll probably end up killing more people by remote control than I ever thought possible/probable, except of course during my brief period qualified to open up canned sunshine.
Not a fun thing to think about.

Right now, im working at the lovely twinkie filled corner store, the Hostess Shop. Its pretty easy, go in, work for 4 hours and go home to my house about a block away.
All i have to do during the day is stock the shelves, take inventory and then clean up the storage room if its in need of a cleaning.
-
Insurance adjuster. I mostly do property (homes, farms, etc). I get tapped for auto liability claims once in a while because I have 7 years of LEO experience too, that comes in quite handy when making a case to the judge, etc. Prior to being an adjuster I was an insurance agent for 8 years w/ Allstate. Oh, I graduated college with a degree in history and political science so I could go teach, but chose the insurance route instead for numerous personal reasons.
Just keep your mind open, many people start down a particular path then decided to take the ditch and go cross country. The most important thing for you to remember is that everything you do, be it good or not so good, learn from it. Life is a long road and you do not know when it will end. Enjoy. :aok

The manager owns the store, so hes allowed to hire basically anyone. i know of a corner store that hired a 13 year old kid just because he was willing to work for about 5 bucks an hour.

What is your opinion on the drones?
I personally don't like the idea of sharing airspace with computers, and flying should be done by real pilots. However if they save lives than they are well worth it.

I am very curious to how that has happened? How does it make sense for the Air Force to put millions of dollars of training into you to fly a Strike Eagle, and then thinks it is better for you to have more money spent to fly UAVs? I am not criticizing or trying to stir up a response just curious. Or was it a personal choice to switch out of Jets? I know that you had recently been a trainer. Has the Air Force downsized the amount of F-15Es?
I apologize in advance for the seeming disregard for structure in the above statement/question.

Prodessional Pilot. I prefer my bonus in the form of money rather than considering compensation as a bonus.
Unlike eagl I fly with the express purpose of not killing anyone. Thanks to him and others who serve/have served for shouldering that burden so I don't have to. <S>

I said that because there are those pilots that don't like flying and just do it to make money.

You mean there is an age limit for working?
I know some jobs require you to be a certain age, for example you can't be a bar tender at the age of 15, but there are jobs that you can do at 10.

If the airspace is controlled properly then sharing the airspace with drones isn't a problem. The control piece has to be airtight though. I flew the T-6 out of Tikrit Iraq for 6 months and we shared airspace with about 4 different types of drones, and more than half the time we were "VFR" see and avoid with them. We had few problems and no close calls, but at another base a C-130 collided with a UAV, so the problem is real if the control breaks down.
As far as overall opinion of drones, they're extremely useful at doing a few things. But they require permissive airspace (ie. nobody shooting at them) and a peer opponent would just love to get a chance to wreck our entire drone fleet on day 1. But for some things, our UAVs are the right tool for the job.

It wasn't my choice, but it came down to a handful of circumstances. First off, I've been out of the F-15E long enough to require substantial refresher training, and the AF would rather give that same amount of training to a new guy who will be around for longer. Second, I've been in AETC flying trainers for a while, but only because air combat command "released" me to AETC to fill instructor jobs. Fighter guys are getting released to AETC in far fewer numbers right now, because the demand to go to UAVs or back to other weapons systems is pretty high for fighter jocks. So ACC didn't release me, and since they'll have to fully train me anyhow, they plopped me in a UAV billet.
It's not all bad. The work schedule sucks since they're working overtime running caps 24 hrs a day, but I injured my back a few times flying fighters and probably shouldn't be pulling Gs anymore. I owed the AF another few years of service so the payback for this training course will take me to 21 yrs of service and I"ll have the option to extend to 24 years (without much say in my next assignment though). Ex-military UAV jobs pay well, so as long as the UAV industry doesn't collapse I should be able to get a decent industry job when I retire too. Finally, my fighter and instructor background should let me fill pretty much any job in the UAV squadron, so I expect to end up one of their more mature mid-level supervisor types fairly quickly as I gain experience. Maybe they'll shuffle me to an unappealing squadron, group, or wing job that requires my background, but it's a total crapshoot so I'm not going to worry about it. I have plenty to think about between now and when I report for duty at Creech.

i always like to read the opinions of those that "do" in things like this.
i'm kinda torn on the drone thing. on the one hand, i'm glad to see technology coming along to keep people like you safe. on the other hand, i don't think we should be putting so many of our eggs in that technology basket. that just seems like a bad idea to me. then add in the difference between you actually being on station, and being able to get a "feel" for what's happening, as opposed to only seeing it through the cameras on the drones.......
either way, i am forever thankful for people like you(even if ya do drive a pontiac :devil :aok)
-
I am also very concerned with the amount of resources we are pouring into our UAV fleet. The problem is that in our current war(s), UAVs are invaluable. They're the liberty ship of the modern era... Supremely valuable now, but we'll probably scrap most of them in a few years and morph the lessons learned into something else that we'll keep around for the long run.
Sorry for the thread hijack...

Thank you for the insight. I am 17 and have been graced by fate to have an interest in aircraft and serving in the military, but also happen to have corrected vision. Any and all things having to do with drones interest me substantially. As the possibility of being of being a pilot is near zero. Why would any branch want me over someone with 20/20 vision? I guess being a flight test engineer, electronic war officer, or a weapons system officer would be okay too.

I realize there is a chance. But, think how small my chance is to become a pilot even with perfect vision and then add the fact I have glasses. Significantly lower. Unless my reasoning is flawed. What is the chance you will become a pilot? Are you even guaranteed a spot? I assume you must be in a ROTC program of sorts if you say you are joining the Air Force in two years but are even you assured a spot?

No, I'm going though the OTS, that's the only way you can get a guaranteed flight slot before you sign the contract. If you don't you can apply as many times as you want every 6 month until your 28 (or 29 can't remember).
I know one MAWTS instructor who always says if your persistent and work your @$* off you'll get it.

Husband and Dad first.
Insurance adjuster 2nd, mostly Large Loss property insurance losses (Residential and Commercial). Great company and I work from home. Prior to that i rebuilt homes and commercial buildings that suffered insurance related losses, fires, floods, tornados, hurricanes etc.......
No one starts out in life thinking they are going to be an adjuster, you kind of just wind up here. Job security though, we get busier when the economy fails.
Have a friend that owns a gunshop / indoor range, I help him out when hes short staffed, or someone calls in. I dont do it for money though, i get to play with all the cool stuff at the shop, and being an avid IPSC and IDPA shooter, and hunter, i get my stuff at cost. Most of my paychecks from here are "reinvested" into the shop. :D
Smokinloon, we should start a support group...... :lol

Having just filed my tax return. The black and white figures show it's not the best way to make a living. But I'm a Skydive pilot or was until last week when the season ended. Now I'm a stay at home Dad for two small boys until next February or March. Unless I can pick up a part time job between now and then.
But next year is looking better, a possible salaried aerial photography job on behalf of the government plus a bit more skydive flying. Fingers crossed! :pray :airplane:

Retired airport manager, currently collecting a small pension and an even smaller social security check which - forces me to be a landlord and rent two apartments in my house. Been renting now for about ten years - good tenants are hard to find !
Also, I have a boat and am licensed to deliver non-potable water to yachts on moorings and anchorage in the local harbor. Hopefully, I will get that off the ground, literally, next summer. Doing a valve-job on the engine now - it's an old Volvo diesel..
All in all - life is good - I'm happy and content in my life...

'Project Manager' for a small light pole company. I do sales, costing, quotations, manage the project from purchase to delivery. I also do structural designing and CAD work to ensure that the pole is structurally sound and build the package to go to the customer for approval. I work with engineers a lot to ensure that all applicable codes are factored in and accounted for.
It's boring, doesn't pay enough, and I don't look forward to getting out of bed in the mornings. On the other hand it does pay fairly well and, in this economy, that doesn't suck.
As others have said prior I didn't start out to do this. I thought I'd retire at General Dynamics after 30 years but I was a victim of the 'peace dividend'. *shrug*

I work at grace performance. It's a motorcycle and snowmobile shop that is owned by my family. :)

You and me both. I graduated with my BS in Aerospace Engineering just after the first Gulf War. Everybody I knew was getting pink slipped. I never worked in my field.
Now I do something totally unrelated, but I make a good living. It's fun, most of the time. I am my own boss. Best of all, the nature of my business requires relatively few hours of my time when compared to other self employed folks.

funny thing though......my cable was out here at the shop a few weeks ago. a truck had driven through the cable....dunno how, but he did....ripped it right out.
i was disgustingly nice to the call taker, who said they couldn't get anyone out here till between 12 and 5. it was 930 when i was on the phone. the service dude pulled in at 1100. he assessed the situation, and went to work installnig a new cable from the pole, to my shop. it started raining as he was setting up, was nearly torrential downpour when he was up on the ladder....and literally stopped as he connected the final connection. he refused to take anything to drink, or a snack(i keep plenty at the shop), but i did tip the guy rather well for what he did for me.

I'm a 55 year old retired pro motorcycle roadracer. I raced for 30 years. 102 wins, 43 crashes. Now I run a Honda/Kawasaki motorcycle store in Phoenix.
I limp a bit when I walk, my right hand and left forearm are kinda mangled but everything still works. I can no longer remember every win I had, but I sure remember those crashes.

going to start college next year.I Haven't decided on becoming a pilot or getting my BS in Aerospace engineering. I am currently working on my private pilots license. There are alot of pilots as well as engineers on this forum. Any pointers on those two options?

I am a Civil Engineer/Land Surveyor.
On the Engineering side: there is nothing more satisfying than driving on a road or highway past a school or residential plan that myself and my team designed, knowing that well after i am gone, that i helped in creating a place for kids to learn and find themselves and homes that they will develop lifelong memories with their families and friends.
(Riprap — also known as rip rap, shot rock or rock armour — is rock or other material used to armor shorelines, streambeds, bridge abutments, pilings and other shoreline structures against scour, water or ice erosion. Riprap works by absorbing and deflecting the impact of a wave before the wave reaches the defended structure.)
On the Surveying side: I love history.

So... Meatwad old buddy... how can I get free stuff?

I like to think of myself...and often tell people...I am retired...because it makes me feel more relaxed...but that's not actually true
although I have spoken about being an attorney..I never in my career practiced law..it was a prerequisite for my career. I'm a retired agent in the entertainment business and I still offer personal management services to a very limited client roster.
I've always wanted to do what I did.....and I was always more interested in the goings-on of the entertainment business behind the scenes. my hero/motivation/guru was peter grant...led zeppelin's notorious manager...although I ended up augmenting into comedy during it's boom in the mid 80's...and quite frankly I got lucky by being in the right place at the right time.
looking at a lot of you cats here who build, construct, and create things....I can't help but be jealous....I wish I had that kind of talent.

No, we don't deal with residential lines. Now don't get your panties in a bunch! Yes, they both do make commercial equipment, but their mainstay is yuppy upper end residential stuff.

I earned my money the old fashion way,I sued for it! :devil
Actually I am or was a cabinetmaker but didnt like working for others so I started a small contractors business and installed kitchens. I worked with solidsurface countertops{corion etc.} certified by dupont, did mostly new construction houses but also did many custom kitchens in older homes. I prefered the coustom stuff but the new homes paid the bills.
It all ended 1 day when I lost an arguement with my tablesaw,it was right I should have taken a break but $$$ sometimes makes us do things we shouldnt. The fight only lasted 1 round and I was winning but the saw bit my ear off so it lost by DQ...... :huh

I'm in one of the worst off counties in the state but our mill is doing okay. It's actually a pallet factory, so we're relatively safe. We cut logs all the way down to 2x4's and 4x1/2's and can put out roughly 1000 pallets a day. Working conditions are kinda' lame but you've gotta' either suck it up or walk. There's an almost endless list of guys out here looking for work so the supervisors here don't care if you run out of Vagisil.

I used to know a guy who did well in day trading...and his schtick was....he regularly used to call on a plethora of box making companies..and pallet making companies..to find out how business was. he considered those two industries as Bell Weather industries ....that could tell him 90 in advance..if his manufacturing stocks would be going up...or down in the near future...and he'd bet accordingly. I always thought that was an interesting strategy.

I am an Aviation mechanic (in training). I'm working to get my A&P. I'm loving every minute of it.
I had a good time taking the training in a small Jr College in AZ. for my A&P. I knew I loved working on engines but was really surprised that doing the sheet metal and riveting was enjoyable as well. Not having any skill at making "art" I didn't expect to be good at it but the work just drew me in. It is nice doing a fabricating job from scratch with nothing but a concept. My first "paying job" task after training was to design and make a mount for an ELT on a Bonanza with a fussy owner. Nothing but hand tools and a small metal brake.
Working for the best engine guy on the field was a great way to find out about the workings of the engines. A fantastic intro to the A&P program. It is a wonderful feeling to start up one you just built and know you are going to fly the bird on it's break in. You can't help going through the entire rebuild in your mind on the way to the runway.

I work for myself. :D It's awesome. I have played violin for 10 years, viola for 4, bagpipes for 3, trombone for 3, trumpet for 2, tuba for 1, and I'm trying to pick up the guitar. how the heck do you guys play more than 2 notes at a time???
I am in a string quartet, and we make a bit of money. Not much, but enough. We tend to play weddings, receptions mostly.
Bagpipes... funerals and graduations mostly, but I've done a few weddings before.
I'll post pics of the instruments if anyone wants...

*shrug*
How strong (if any) demand for revit-format specs/details have you guys had from your clients in the last 2-3 months compared to say 6-12 months before that? I'm starting to see some hype dye off (*shakes his CADMonkey fist at autodesk*), but I'm not counting on seeing the genre completely fade out yet.

It's been about the same actually they are starting to demand more detail on the drawings. I'm a victim of my own success here because I set up a system to turn designs around quickly and efficiently which is unusual in this industry and now my customers seem to think it's easy so it's no big deal to request several a day and stamp their feet when they're fifth in line.
I don't see that genre drying up soon at all unless they come up with a way for it to be automated and, as much as I trust computers, I'm not sure it's possible to program to cover the nuances of all possible permutations on a project.

Right now I'm in my third semester trying to become a History teacher. During breaks I work at a local seed company that cleans, treats, and sells beans and wheat. Most of the time I'm on a forklift moving bulk bags filled with anywhere from 1400 to 2700 pounds of seed, loading/unloading, cutting and dumping, etc...
Here's the most common view I have. Dumping the beans into a hopper that feeds onto a belt, which then dumps the beans into a hopper bottom.

first person i've ever met that actually wanted to drive for prime, better than jb hunt or schneider though. just be aware they are one of several companies known to run their drivers until they drop. if you go reefer you will get more loads/mile than flatbed or tanker. personally if i was gonna get on the road again, i would check with heartland express or millis.

Seed wheat sucks, especially the red treated stuff. Had to mix it with fertilizer, sucked :(
Oh yeah. When we load seed tenders, you actually have to get in the tender with the wheat to move around the hose on the belt so it loads evenly. Aside from getting a high off the smell of the chemicals, my boots have a new red tint! lol
-
Most I have done is load it from a blender into a belt into the truck. Had a homemade rake to level it out on the sides and top
-
It's not too bad, usually I'm the one dumping it onto the belt so I don't have to worry about it, but when I work on small breaks and weekends I get the shorter end of the stick lol

within cap, they allow us to do this, but with prior permission most times...i think it's 48 hours notice.
i was working the pattern at mcguire with my cfi a few years back. we were doing low approaches, and bob was working with me in crosswinds. after the 3rd or 4th pass, he took the radio, and asked them if we could make the next pass a touch n go. there was silence, then after a few seconds, they explained to us that they don't normally allow that without prior permission, but gave us permission.

I am a farmer.....or used to be....mainly.
Before 30 or so, I was a labourer with summer jobs along with school, including a farmer's hand and a dairy worker. Then it went into more farmer's hand work on some farms, and then into farming. Farming then also lead to some machine contractors work, like seed-work, ground work, muck-out-manually, whatever.
Later it went more various. Working as a farm hand in Germany, carrying on with the above, working on exhibitions in Germany, then back to home in Iceland, farming, stacking turf, contractor again, then to the fish industry, carrying on with farming, then side-slips like film industry (as an extra, but it was utterly Hollywood :D), going to the sea on trawlers as a crewman, then as a ships chef on ships, tourguiding by bus, and tourguiding by air, running a guesthouse with the wife, and being the local camping warden. And this morning I spent buying spare parts for fellow farmers.
The worst thing you can ask me is what I do :)....or did ;)

Im a native artist and carver, hence my nic Carver. You can check out my work by searching Google images: Rod Smith Galuyagmi.
Galuyagmi means Great First Birth.
Beautiful carvings and form line designs Rod. I studied NW coast native art as a side interest at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and lived in Sitka where I owned and operated commercial salmon trollers for may years.
You designs look like a mix between northern and southern styles.

I'm a merchant marine captain, I run an offshore pilot launch on the approaches to New York harbor week on week off rain, snow or shine.

I bring pilots (harbor captains) to and from ships entering and departing NY harbor 15 miles offshore in the Atlantic like the USS New York on he maiden voyage.

Anyone know of any large flight schools/ universities that will be hiring CFI's? I think that teaching others would be a very interesting and fun course if my AF dreams dont work out. :)

I thought about trying to get a job flying police drones once they become common place around here!

There are plenty of universities with large flight programs (few from the top of my head: ERAU (AZ & FL), USU, & Dowling). But as far as I know they like hiring people with experience, so you might need to work with some "small" school for some time. Also you can always teach on your own plane.

Very cool cobia.
One question though... Why only one male fitting for all of your air tools?
-

finishing up emt basic class so once i get certified ill be joining an ambulance squad and rollin with them. in a few years hoping to have my paramedic certification.

because most have to be regulated, and each brass regulator is about 10 bucks x 23 air tools + sticky fingers in the shop = cobia keeps one very close :lol
-
Ahhh, that sucks that you have to worry about stuff getting ripped off.
I live by my air tools, fortunately we don't run at a high enough psi to worry about regulating them down. I'm used to having everything fit with it's own male end, that's why I was confused.

Many jobs since I quit college 12 years ago. Most of the time I was a fencing contractor with family business, great work if you can get it, outdoors and good for fitness. Now I'm working on a riding stables to earn my keep and food and a little cash to live. I'm very happy like that. I have few costs in life aside from this game.

I like to tell interested people that it's the modern-day traveling craftsmen profession. You need to be willing to take your tools of the trade, go out there in the world (it won't come to you), and find work in a variety of jobs/professions and hopefuly one that will suit your tastes and tallents. You can easily find a boring and mindless drafting job as one of hundreds of drafting monkeys in a large firm - if you're good at it and are satisfied with that. But the variety available out there is pretty wide, but only if you have determination on getting into some specific fields and aquiring tools useful for them. You got to have the best tools to get the best job. IE: lets say a company that does cabinet doors - three tools in your bag guarenteed to get you hired there: basic degrees/cert/experience working with current/modern standards for CAD/3D design, CNC Milling, and a good portfolio (we are "artists" after all).
For the past few decades almost all industries are trying to err away from one-person one-job employees. So in CAD/3D design, at the minimum they want you to be very computer litterate/competent so for simple things you're not dependent on the IT department AND you know better than not keeping a backup of that $400k project file. On the vahala side to perspective employers, going back to buisness that does cabient doors, a potnetial employee having CAD/3D design experience (the "on paper" part of their buisness) and CNC experience (physicaly making flawlessly (programming the machine errorless) the $ product) and that single person being able to seamlessly bounce back and forth between teh two troubleshooting... well, if you're the only person in the company that does both, make sure they pay you apropriatley for it as you're going to be a popular person. :aok
Just sharing with you so you know what you should be persuing or are getting into. Almost all sucessful or half-content CAD/3D Design that I know of have one extra card up their sleeve that keeps them employed (or happily so).

i think that's a ford in the pic. if you find a good pic of one of the holdens, you'll also have a good pic of a camaro though. :devil

I'll laugh if ford imports that as the new ranchero.

Would you like me to make you an aluminum manifold ? :D
You could at least change the regulator, as needed, when you use each tool.
Much easier than changing fitting, each time you use a different tool :O

that one is a 2002 model, they have changed a bit since then but still the same basic car.

Cap, I can see the Holden Monaro clearly in the Pontiac GTO, but can only see a vague resemblance of Holden in the 2012 Camaro. Did they build a new body on the Commodore chassis?
