I reckon most car nuts have a shortlist of cars they'd like to resto "some day" when theres time, space, money etc. and I know theres a few here who've done some very nice work on their cars already.
so this is my fantasy, when-I-get-round-to-it resto: an early 70s Toyota Celica.
hey, dont laugh! :D
mini-mustang style body, double headlights kinda remind me of the early Aston DBS, overall a pretty car. and the 2l engine sounds rather good for a four-pot :aok
a guy in my street had one when I was a kid, and when I saw Hannu Mikkola oversteer his way to 2nd place on the RAC rally in the late 70s (one of the stages was near where I lived) I was sold:
almost all the parts are still available and reasonably easy and cheap to rebuild as a Group 4 rally car ... apart from the 16v head (they only made about 50 race engines.) the difference is ~120hp @6000 for the road engine, 250-300 @9000-9800 for the race engine ... but what a sound:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v13gpH7zy2U (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v13gpH7zy2U)
they look particularly good with the tarmac setup:

so whats your (realistic) fantasy retro?

I've got 2 nissan Leopard F31/infinti M30 and might paint one in skyline red R31 colors to confuse the sideways baseball cap wearin' street squirrels and going with the JDM nissan leopard appearance for the other.
One has an inline six turbo at this time but it may get a turbodiesel while the other one will either be a turbocharged DOHC infiniti V8.

Don't do it. Car restoration will send you mental and make you into an OCD wingnut sitting on the floor in the middle of a huge pile of parts wondering how you ever got into this mess! (http://i1114.photobucket.com/albums/k526/rwrk2/crazy10.gif)

There was this guy that had an old willies couple in his yard. One summer I stopped by everytime I was in the area to see if the guy wanted to sell it. Nope he said, I'm going to rebuild it one of these days. He got tired of seeing me so I stopped going over there. The following summer he sold it to a guy the next town over and he rebuilt it in less than a year and put it on the road. I'm heart broken every time I see it drive by :(

awesome, was it competitive/fun to drive? Ive heard the steering is pretty awful not being rack & pinion.
I looked at the datsun bluebird because it struck me as being like a budget 131 Abarth with its IRS, but they didnt officially import any coupes here, and theres only about 5 left here of any type! If I was in Aus/NZ/US I'd be all over a bluebird.
IRS would be great but I'm not aware of any Grp 1/2 cars homologated with it apart from the datsun, and Grp 4 is just waaaay too expensive to build for (eg. theres a freshly rebuilt 2l 16v abarth engine for sale near me for ... £40,000 :uhoh) The escorts seemed to do ok with a live axle, but they are silly money these days.
love the Capri, my dad had one of the first in the UK :aok they were decent race cars too.

It was fairly competitive because it was stock, however as you said you could really saw at the wheel and go nowhere.. :O There was an RX3 that would steal the show most weekends because it was extremely fast compared to the others in class.
I'm in Canada so we got plenty of 510's back in the day, sadly though most have rotted away because of all the salt used on the roads here.
I never raced the capri, started getting it setup, some suspension mods but my son came along and I had other priorities and sold the capri...... still a sore spot after all these years.... :furious

Skuzzy, we had a guy in town here that owned the only Honda Cycle shop for about 200 miles around for years. Once he got out of racing and his kids took over the shop he went car hunting for a hobby. He had 2 T-birds, and that corvette as well as a few other choice toys. He'd roll them out for the local parades and such. He use to store them in an old mill here in town where he would spend time just tweaking and cleaning them in his retirement. One weekend the woodshop in the other end of the mill caught fire and the whole place went up. It took 2 days to put it all out, all of the cars were lost, but thankfully no people. I don't think he ever got over it.

My Dad had one when I was young. It was his pride and joy. We couldn't even eat in it when we made the trek to the golden arches back then. He stopped once, Mom got out to mail a letter in the mailbox. He thought to be nice and move up for her. She had left the door open, he moved up thinking the door would close, but it didn't before he hit the telephone pole and put a huge dent in the door. LOL!!! did he cry! LOL! and of course it was alll my mothers fault!!!
agreed, the Mercury is a fantastic design. is that Sly Stallones? he built a chopped one iirc.
No it's just a picture I pulled off the web. As for Stallone's, I read that he drove that one in the movie "Cobra" and fell in love with it and bought it from the guy who owned it.

Car "restoration" can end up being a pain if your chosen ride doesn't have any parts available.
Car's I have previously restored and simply stopped because of lack of parts availability are......
Mazda RX-2, Maxda RX-3, RX-4, RX-5 cosmo, 280zx, 300zx, 810, 810 bluebird (maxima), S12 200sx.....etc.
Lots of new 240z parts are popping up so that is a car back on the list of candidates.
My current kick is buying rare cars that aren't yet classics but are still available at the junkyards.
You can't be choosy about when you purchase parts or find a rare car....................when they come available, buy then or you might wait 4 years before you see another.
I might try my hand at a subaru like this RX coupe.

Some day i will restore my Volvo P1800 S 1965.
I have had it since 1984, used it as everyday car 1984-1988. It has been in my carage since 1993... Before that i used it as summer car.
Body is very good condition(restored 1986), but interior needs all replace. Mechanically it is "easy" to restore..
So far no time... or serious interest to make it run again.. Maybe next year :pray
-
I'd love to restore a 1991-ish fox platform 5.0LX mustang. It wouldn't be anywhere near factory under the skin though... Too many weaknesses in that platform. But a complete re-do of the suspension/brakes and a modern V8 in there plus some tasteful paint and it would be good clean fun.
Alternately, one of the first or second model miatas (for their lower weight) but outfitted with an additional 200hp and an RX-7 rear end, or whatever equivalent I can get to bolt on.
Or an early model vette convertible.

A 1966 Chevy El Camino.......I bought this car/heap back in 1983 during my senior year of high school, and lost interest, or more correctly, lost the time needed to work on it as I got older. It still sits behind my dad's shop out at the farm. Every time I get a chance to drive out there, I walk back there and see it. I keep telling myself I need to load it on a trailer and haul it to the Panhandle and get started on it, but, again............no time. I am out on job locations 21-30 days a month so I'd have to just see it sit there again, or pay to have it restored.

I've got one of these that I picked up for £250. All it needs is a bit of love and a complete respray. I could get her back into mint condition for about £2000, one day I will. Not exactly my first choice of sports car but once I had driven her some I was in love. The rear wheel drive powered by a 2L italian engine is undeniably the most fun I have had in a car with my clothes on.

I can't imagine how much fun a resto-mod fox body Mustang would be..
..stuffed with the new Boss 302 motor or some such and made to handle like a go-cart.
It would *so* be worth makin it quiet just to spank the new Mustang guys hard an make em cry :)

I do not have any knowledge of what cars outside the U.S. would be easy to restore, but in the U.S., the 1970, and earlier model Mustangs are the easiest to do.
You can build a brand new 64 1/2 Mustang, if you want, and get a vehicle identification number plate from Ford.

1930 Ford AA truck. I'd like to put a (relatively) modern drive train in it, say from the 60's so I can still do all my own maintenance, and have it as my daily driver. If they hadn't changed the regs to force me to get a commercial DOT number to do it, I'd but the signage on the sides for my blacksmith shop.

One of the neatest '91 stangs I saw was a "stock" GT, all white except for red detail highlights. It had the overall effect of something out of star wars but was pretty much completely stock except for the little detail work. I think an LX with the trunk would be a far better sleeper though, and less wind noise and body flex without the hatchback on the GT.

In 1964 Dodge and Plymouth made 100 of these each. They were made to do one thing......Drag Race.
Previous to 1964 they did have the 426 but it was the Max Wedge. In 1964 it was the 426 race and street Hemi.
I give you the baddest Boy on the block.....the lightweight!
You'll notice only one windshield wiper,no radio, heater etc. One badazz quarter miler. They rooled!
Some went so far as to acid dip the chassis and body to shed weight.
I've owned hypo MOPARS since the mid 60s'.....65Fury IIIs (383 335hp 4speed, 69 roadrunner 383 also, and a 70 Coronet with a 440)
Nutin' could touch a 440 for low end grunt...even a Hemi. Hemis were difficult, they'd flood etc. and be a pain in the arse unless ya
had a great crew to keep'em happy, and MOPAR did. Race Hemis came with dual quads on a crossram intake. Streeters came with dual
quads also but with a conventional dual quad intake. Unless you were licensed and sponsored you couldn't purchase a race Hemi.
I'm thinkin' "Color me Gone" painted on the side of this bad boy in the picture. (You Old MOPAR guys will remember that name) :rock
This would be my dream project.

Yassir the '70's Hemi Cuda's were beautiful cars.
The '67-69 Barracuda's just look more 'animal' ..not as refined..
..a bit on the raw side :)
And the Super Stock '68's were scary fast to boot..
..right up there with the COPO L-88 Camaro's an such.
They came with all the lightweight 'features' .. lexan windows that used a strap to pull them up..
..an such.. similar to the early factory hot rods.

I loved my 69 Road Runner. Fast, fast, and did I mention, fast? Of course, it was not even close to stock.
Not to mention the cast iron case 4 speed it had. You could not break that thing no matter what you did.
To this day, nothing sounds as good as a high end, big block, Mopar engine. The exhaust note was beautiful.
Hey Hajo, do not forget the stamped sheet metal bumpers on those old factory race Dodges and Plymouths. You could sneeze on them and dent them. :)

nothing have I seen could take what that 340/727 combo could deal with, when I say I put it to the test....you can be sure that is exactly what I did with it.....

worked on an old ladys house out in the stick here in vermont a couple years back. The guy I was working with and I were talking cars, and she comes walking over and asked us if we liked cars, so of course we were like YA. she takes us on a walk to this barn that looked like it was going to fall over any second, I wouldnt even store a wheel barrow in it. We had to open the doors and there was a tarp covering something. She tells us to pull the tarp off, so we started to take the tarp off and once we got the tarp off there sat a 1929 Ford rumbleseat. MINT!!! you could eat off of the floors, the engine compartment didnt even have a spec of oil around inside. She was the 3rd owner of it. back in the early 30s her father bought it off of a family friend, she then inherited it from him. I was in SHOCK AND AWE at the sight of that.

Hey Lawndart I agree Jags were beautiful! Unfortunately they at that time were highly unreliable. So much so that British Leyland sold to Ford
and Ford tried to correct the problems...leaks etc. The Jaguar of today is much more reliable and a great looker. Maybe someone can answer if

ford sold jag to tata a few years ago. for the record, the ford jags sucked so badly, that they made the jag jags look good. at least from a repair standpoint.
-
The Jag Jags were mostly bad in that era like all British cars due to industrial action and idiotic cost cutting which irreparably damaged the reputation of British cars, unfortunately.
I was reading recently about the development of the XK engine which was apparently fleshed out on fire watch on the roof of the Coventry factory in the blitz. :old:

"Hmph!" he snorted, "can't be from England: it's not leaking oil!"
True story.

Yep, X-Type head gasket replacement involves dropping the motor out of the car since lifting it out is harder. Mine leaks about 2 drops a day and has since I got it. Not gonna fix it, ever.

They were all pretty shocking in terms of build, trade unionism and bone idle Brummies killed the British car market. No denying that the Jags were stunningly beautiful despite being banged together with a pig hammer in the 15 minutes between strikes :old:

You Australain Fish?
A Peter Brock Holdon Torana shot at Bathurst have not seen that in a long while.
-
I didnt know a flatbed truck could look quite that gorgeous :aok
are there many like it left?
Sorry so late in responding. Yes, there are quite a few left, some even in this good of condition. I saw one for sale in this shape on Carigslist in Washington state a couple years ago minus the engine for $5500.00, still in the factory paint. There is little collector interest, so they remain fairly cheap.
-

Yes I am mate.
I was a Brock/Holden fan from when I was about 6-7. I grew up in the V8 Supercar years so I missed all the great Group C & A racing. This "Car of tomorrow" V8 stuff makes me sick. If your car is trying to look like a production car, use a production car and let me go down the road and buy it from the dealership!

some day soon, i will get a new engine or rebuild the current one in my 1992 Ford F250 it was my first vehicle and it will never be replaced in my heart, and i think it still gets better mileage then my 2002 chevy blazer

Well just picked this up last sunday in southern Ohio for 700 bucks!! :aok :rock   Its a 1929 Model A sedan and was last on the road in 74. It was used in st. Patrick's day parades in the late 60's to mid 70's. the owner was the president of some local club hence the name "presidents limo"

Sweet Model A.
It's not often you get a deal like that.
As far as australian racing cars, I started to lose interest once the series became "V8 supercar series".
I kind of liked the mid 80s cars in that series.
I almost did a wide body similar to this one on my 1984 910 import with inline six turbo engine but I got the Infiniti.

Thinkin' bout doing the same thing GE. Done fiddling with the look of the R/T.
Got the American racing Wheels already on it. ditched the stock ones 3 weeks after I got it.
GE.....check our Challenger Forums for wheels and tires. Speedlogix is where I ordered my wheels.
They do tires also. Can't find what ya want there I know Cokers has anything ya want.
-
I loved my 69 Road Runner.
Skuzzy.....that trans was an 833. I finally remembered LOL 2 weeks later ;)

When I'm done with the GT6, engine of the Formula and the interior of the Monaco ... I'll probably save for an E type to be converted as a Lowdrag :pray. But hell they sure don't give them E types away lately, even in pityfull shape. :uhoh ... but I'd like to have something with a V12 ... might have to look toward Italy, a 330 P4 kit from RCR with a 550 Maranello in it? All I know it's not going to be a muscle car, I'm sick of them.

Not havin a lift to play on or air tools to do it faster
..I am curious about how wide a tire-rim can fit up under our new Challengers without major mods.
The days of slidin a hydrastic bottle jack up inside with a coupla peices of wood to 'widen' the wheel well are past.
(been there, done that on more than a few cars .. Duster included altho you would be hard pressed to notice)

In my opinion the Challenger is by far the toughest Muscle car ever made...I am referring to the 70's made ones....but the new ones are the best retro made....look wise
New car is 4,100 lbs :uhoh its worthless and just prays on your nostalgia to get your money. I love the way she looks but performance wise you cam throw all the HP you want you aint going to race squat with it.
yup a top speed of 175 mph is too slow and bad performance
the car drives and handles great......its no Lamborghini....but ahhhh........its a Challenger :aok
-
Frenchy then new ones are doing quite well at the track.
-

Hmm. They are being raced and very well. A few even play AH. The new ones produce more hp per/cu.in and stock are a full second faster then the old 426 street Hemis.
-
the challenger is a gorgeous car. most true to its original design. couple running around my area sounding great.
if i'm not mistaken though, to get the challenger that will equal the mustang or camaro, you need to get the challenger srt8. the r/t from what i recall only has the 370 or so horse 5.7 liter. runs 13's. pricewise it's competitive with the camaro/mustangs though, but not performancewise. get the srt8, and i think you're in the $40k range, and then just matching the performance of the camaros/mustangs that only cost 30-35k. THIS is what i think srtfrenchy meant when he called them slow. they are. compared to their competition. otherwise, they are by no means slow.
i know someone's gonna throw top speed out there.........the ford is limited to 155 i think. dunno what the chevy does. also, i don't believe that the top gear dorks were able to get 170 outta theirs........
-
What are you guys calling 'the track'? Because in NASA races and Time Attacks events there's none. INK top speed is so irrelevant in road racing. Even here in the US where some track favor long straights the new challenger is a dog because it's way too heavy. Gazillion HP and high top speed miight make the owner feel good, but theres way more needed to be called performance, as you'd get humiliated at your local road track by a Lotus Elise type.
It gets eaten alive at any slalom comparaison too vs Mustang/Camaros/imports.
-
I looked at the SS Camaro ..base model you can get an LS motor in costs ~40k
..or ..put in perspective ..
..more than a base model Vette. -puzzled look-
Mustang is a good lookin ride, but never again for me.. burnt once, not gonna happen again.
The Challenger is heavier ..also roomier ..also can see out of it ..
..and like all the rest, aftermarket bits are out there to make it run *just* fine thank-you-verra-much.
..and it is the most inexpensive V8 'muscle' car available in Hemi R/T Challenger trim.
I like not havin to fold myself up *just* right to get into it, not feelin like I am crammed in,
and ya .. even havin a back seat that people can actually sit in when they want to ride along.
ie: took my Son-in-law and 3 teenage grand kids for a ride when I brought it home, and smoked the tired *just* dandy off a stoplight ..
.. because I *could* :)
Granted, the skid pad numbers aren't as good as the Vette .. *cough* ..it's not a Vette, or a Z-Camaro, or a Shelby ..it's a Hemi R/T Challenger.
There's people runnin in the 9's in the quarter with 'em ..lotta money and time spent to do it ..just like any other 9 second car.
There's also a slew of guys runnin 13's with Hemi R/T Challengers that are stock.
Right outta the box.
To run 12's requires a sticky tire in the back.
LOL. Sound familiar?
The Hemi R/T Challenger is the best Modern Muscle car IMHO.

the r/t shows to be a tad more expensive than the camaro/mustangs. you don't have to spend 40k to get a v8 camaro that'll run 12/9's. i don't fold myself to get in/out of my gt, and i'm 6'2. at that, i've got my seat pulled half way forward, and lifted up pretty high. at that point, i've still got my leg extended pretty far to clutch the car.......
-
What are you guys calling 'the track'? Because in NASA races and Time Attacks events there's none. INK top speed is so irrelevant in road racing. Even here in the US where some track favor long straights the new challenger is a dog because it's way too heavy. Gazillion HP and high top speed miight make the owner feel good, but theres way more needed to be called performance, as you'd get humiliated at your local road track by a Lotus Elise type.
It gets eaten alive at any slalom comparaison too vs Mustang/Camaros/imports.
I agree in road racing top end is pfft....but my point is........ they are very fast.... more then one would ever need on the street......
they are great cars......definitely heavy....but awesome non the less :aok

the challenger is a gorgeous car. most true to its original design. couple running around my area sounding great.
if i'm not mistaken though, to get the challenger that will equal the mustang or camaro, you need to get the challenger srt8. the r/t from what i recall only has the 370 or so horse 5.7 liter. runs 13's. pricewise it's competitive with the camaro/mustangs though, but not performancewise. get the srt8, and i think you're in the $40k range, and then just matching the performance of the camaros/mustangs that only cost 30-35k.
Cap! Hey Bro....7 guys on our forums had their stock R/Ts dyno'd. Stock mind you. Lowest was 389.....highest 407. Flywheel of course.
Dodge always did limit the HP rating at a lower RPM not redline. Some of us have tweeked ours inexpensively to say the least. Lotsa
parts available. With the work done on mine I'd guess somewhere between 400 to 415 hp...not much. But plenty for an old geezer
who quit running the quarter mile in the mid 70s. Challengers don't come from the factory with superchargers. Mustangs and Camaros can.
I would imagine that if Dodge saw fit to put a supercharger on top of it at the factory, might be a different story. The top end on these
cars are around 170mph.....SRT 176. If you watched the version of Top Gear British....they ran 3 of them Cadillac , Corvette and Challenger.
They didn't bother with the Camaro or the Mustang for some reason. The Challenger ran 169 at Bonneville....stock.

so you had to modify yours to make the factory hp of mine? :neener:
you can't get a gt or an ss with a supercharger from the factory either.
aaaannnnnnddddd finally....they left out the mustang and camaro to avoid embarrassing cadillac and dodge. :aok
BTW.....as much as i'd LOVe to take the gt to the strip.......i won't, 'cause virtually EVERY nice caR i've owned, i ruined through drag racing. :old:

I already dusted a Camaro SS with 426hp under the SS badge on his fenders. Nice Camaro, was all black, automatic.
When I was in second just pulling into 3rd...he quit. What is says on the car don't make it so ;) He was already a fender behind :D
Frenchy....track racing cars I love also. I prefer the old trans am series cars. BTW Dodge Viper owns the track lap record at Neurbering :O

i used to have dozens of trophies that i took with my 83 and 89 mustangs.
if you had him by a whole fender, at that point, he'd either launched poorly, or left it in "D". that said, they're (from what i'm seeing/reading) running 13.0's to 12.9's. wait.....those numbers are for manual trannies. i don't know if the camaros are faster or slower with automatics. the stangs are about .2 faster with auto trans than they are with manual........

Why? The brit version was cool, the domestic escort wasn't anything to drool over. Put 650BHP in one and it's the coolest car on your block.

Lolz, it's not an Escort or a normal production car, it's an RS200 Group B Rally Car. The one in the picture was a homologation road car. It's got a 1.8 litre 400 hp turbocharged engine in the back, transmission in the front and full time 4WD.
-
It's not the viper that owns the "production car record at the ring" but rather the race tires they used masquerading as street tires.
I saw a viper with no track days that had only 3,000 miles on the car and the front tires were worn to the cords.
The michelin pilot sport cup tires are showing up on cars posting fast times because they have a treadwear of 80.........which means they are closer to a full race compound than a street compound.
They also come with a starting tread depth of 5.5/32 vs the 9/32 of the rest of the world's performance tires.
Nurburgring times mean squat until the tire issue is standardized or we will soon see cars with treadwear numbers of 45 which only last 1,000 miles on the street.

I have michelin pilots on mine although not that version. It's got a high speed rating but also a street rating. really I don't care if the Viper had snow shoes on.
It set the record. Which will of course be broken by something else. No matter what there will always come something bigger, badder and faster. Been that way
forever.

ok. so they're running with the camaros. :aok
i still prefer my manual transmission too......but if i were gonna pick up one of these newer stangs to drag race, then i'd jump on a 6 speed auto. they're .2 faster.

Yeah, I think you're right. speaking of kits.
Has anyone else been following Factory Five's latest kit?
Project 818 (https://www.factoryfive.com/kits/project-818/)
basically a mid-engined 2 seater roadster using Subura WRX engine and running gear, weighing in at >1800lbs (818kgs) and around $15k for a complete build. (assuming you buy a wrecked WRX donor for > $4k.
I think the "R" version is hideous, but the "S" version ain't to bad looking (really my only issue is the Camry headlights they use seem out of proportion, but being a kit you could mod it) and a 250hp turbocharged boxer, in the middle of a 1800lb car sounds like A LOT of fun. :D

Well...some might think I traded down Ink...depending on personal likes.
I loved the Charger and if it was a 68 or 69 I would never have sold it. Had an opportunity to purchase and restore a car that was always a fav of mine growing up. And it's a manual transmission, triple black example. I wanted a stick, and too get back into the 60's. It's coming along very nicely and should be extremely sexy when complete.
I suppose I can share one pic now...

 Nah I just know Firebirds a bit since I have a 73 :old: Good choice mate. Is it a true HO?
No, it's a standard 350 model. Multi leaf already, and I built engine and exhaust out to HO specs. #18 heads, 68 cast intake, 4 barrel, duels. Not going to clone though (no stripe) A-A code starlight black with black vinyl and interior. 3 speed manual Hurst, console delete. 3:55 Posi.
-
Awsomeness, dig the 3 speed.
-
well..me personally I would never take a firechicken over a Mopar :neener:
but when I was around 11-12 my "dad" had a 67 firebird ragtop...Yellow with white interior......They are very nice looking cars....
I do remember he had issues with the timing chain, kept breaking.....but it was a badass car.
and as long as it makes you happy, thats all that matters.....I am sure it will be sick. :aok
-
The only Pontiac's I am crazy about are the 65 and 66 GTO's. I put those models in the same class as the 69 Charger, as far as aesthetics are concerned.
In the sixties, I think 69 was the banner year for all the car makers hot rods. Mustang, Charger, Challenger, Camaro, Chevelle SS were really sharp looking cars and could be ordered from the factory with all the go-fast options you could handle. It was a good year.
-
I didn't see the Pontiac sticker. The blue block was the key. I owned a Trans Am! Starlight Black too! Bought it new in 1978 From Wilson Pontiac in Youngstown Ohio Sept of 78.
For that time it was great. Sticker price was 6800 dollars. They'd already gone through the HP degradation. It was a 400 cu in (6.6 on the shaker)
Nice choice Stampf! You just slid by! :rofl I'll always be MOPAR but I did enjoy the T/A. Hell I was married at the time, I was lucky to own a bicycle.
I agree with Skuzzy....69 was the year. Challengers came out in 1970 so they could be ordered in 69. I still have my roots though in the early to mid 60s
Mopar lightweights and the sleepers with 426 max wedge Plymouths etc. It was breathtaking to see the early Hemis (426 1964 and up) run at the track.
Nothing sounds like a Hemi. Sorta like hearing a flyby of a Mustang, you don't have to see it, just hear it and you know it's a P51.
-
.....Challengers came out in 1970 so they could be ordered in 69. I still have my roots though in the early to mid 60s
......
ohhh you beat me to it....Challengers first year was 1970......
but ya Skuzzy you are right 69 was the best year of all.......one reason though....thats the year this world saw me come into it :D
-
Thanks everyone. Very excited about this one. It's really gonna be a looker. Not a monster, but a fun ice cream getter for me and the wife to cruise around in. I'll always be a MOPAR freak above all, but you need have a lot of expendable cash to own the ones that I would like too. A real R/T or Hemi, for example. Oh to have some of the cars I have owned, back today. I'm a man of modest means and I'm not into clones.
And yes '69 was the dream year. Best looking models for most muscle/pony cars for sure, though I preferred the 67/68 Firebird over the changes in 69.
Roll on!

Speakin o' early Firebirds:
Friend of mine, Tom Nielsen, asked me how to make his '68 Firebird faster ..
..I told him I could put a big block Chebby in it for about as much as it would cost to rebuild his 350
..and it would be orders of magnitude faster -evil grin-
We went junkyard hunting ..found a big port 396 in a '69 chebby station wagon.
Put 11.5 TRW pistons in, balanced, printed, stuffed a nice 550 lift hydrastic cam in,
tunnel rammed it with two Holly 750's up top, and put 4.88's in the back.
FYI ..to put a Rat into a Firebird or GTO, all you need are the mounts direct from Chebby parts counter..
..mounts, clutch linkage, throttle links for a Rat in a Camaro bolt into the Firebird,
..for the GTO you need the same for that year Chevelle ..also bolt in.
..and the Rat weighs about the same as the Pontiac 350.
It was *crazy* fast :) ..120mph to merge with traffic up an onramp, from the stoplight, f'rinstance :)
All kinds of Pontiac 'people' wanted to know where we had gotten the tunnel ram for the '350'
..he had left the stock emblems on.
..Tom useda tell 'em he carved it out of a block of aluminum :)
I ran him from a roll once in my 440 Duster .. Tunnel Ram 440 vs Tunnel Ram 396
..the big Rat just ran away ..far more power out of those big port heads :)
To this day Tom swears I was pedaling it just to make him look good ..I never pedaled it for anyone.
(unless I was ahead and feelin 'friendly' ..not very often)

My first car was 1974 the Capri, red. Loved that car. Put nice rims, front spoiler, surf racks. Good times, good times. I'll try to find picture.
My dream car would be 1970good Cuda.

The Wife made it official. She wants me to build her a 62 Corvette after I finish with the Cobra. And the search begins..... WOOT!

'62 Corvette is a beautiful car. I must say that I thought that the late 50s beautiful front end combined with the back end of a first generation stingray was a bit of a miss match and that -60 Corvette with its still round back end looks better. I still do think that way but the couple times I've seen '61-'62 'Vette in person that fact tends to get forgotten real quick! :D
-
'58 model for me on looks - the '50s rear wings with the new double headlamps is about as good as a convertible can look :aok

Skuzzy.....you going to take as much time to build that vette as you did the cobra?? :rofl
Can see wife now out in driveway with rolling pin and crossed arms looking at the uncompleted as of yet 62 Vette

The Cobra is still in storage until the new house gets built. Looking at a move in date in May/June of this year. Then I can start on the Cobra.
She asked how long it would take to build her car and I just said, "it will depend on how fast you can throw money at it". I hope I did not put my foot into my mouth. If she really tosses money at it, I may have to take extended leave from HTC in order to survive. :)

In case all of you hadn't noticed.....beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Me....I luv'em all. Everyone of them is special to their owner.
I fancy Moprars....Cap Fords, Shuff Chevys'. Ya can't go wrong with any of them if you like them. I was very fortunate to be right in the middle of
the muscle car era. I was born in 1950 and drving american muscle in 1966. Cap, Golfer, and Shuffler will tell you they build them better today
then they did then. In the mid 60s boy would they go.....the biggest problem was stopping them. I had a lot of near misses believe me.
Brakes back then sucked...to put it mildly. The 60s had so many beautiful muscle cars and early 70s, I can't name them all. The first Cobra was
made by AC...shipped over here and a legend put a 265 cu. in V8 in it. Most people forget about the early 60s' Chevy 409s. First V8 to put out as
much HP as cu. in. Keeping drive shafts in them was a problem lol. Studebaker...you prolly think I'm nutz but in the 50s the Studebaker could
be considered the father of muscle. Same with Desotos and Chryslers. Hudsons......early NASCAR they rooled!
I'm very glad we have the modern versions out. They handle wayyyyyyyyy better, put out more HP with fewer CU/INs, they actually have brakes
that can stop you and the comfort is fantastic. I will always however love the Hemi Lightweights, The Thunderbolt, Gassers of any kind etc.
Whoever was responsible for starting this crap, I'd like to thank him, and slap him at the same time ;) What a way to p'off the wife and spend money eh?

bold......don't forget lincolns, and oldsmobiles. people often forget these cars ruled though. and they also think supercharging is new, when you could get a golden hawk with a paxton on it back in what? 57? then there was the front wheel drive cord in the 20's i think it was?
sometimes i wish i was around back then.
also....very well said hajo.

Oldsmobile...the Rocket V8! Mercs........I coulda slapped stallone for destroying the Merc he drove in a movie (name I can't remember) Bridgette Neilson was in it.
there was a song in the 50s entitled Hot Rod Lincoln,,,racing a Cadillac I believe. Great song...great cars at that time also. No cookie cutter cars.
Almost every year the design changed making identifying the brands much easier. Now....I drive and say to myself.."what the hell is that?"
-
I would love to find a 57' Chevy Bel-Air with the fins on the back to restore lol as matter of fact I have one here in town at an old salvage yard runs and everything but it needs almost a complete paint job and new floor pans and its a little to rich for my blood lol
-
My first car was a Rover SD1, and I have been toying with the idea of one day to restore one. Get some mods done to fix the most common reliability problems, plus some modern creature comforts.
Perhaps something similar to these beauties: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1nlyC4Vq_M
That would be awesome. Problem is finding a good one with the steering wheel on the right side.

Cobras are nice but I prefer the lines of the BMW507! If I could have my dream car it would be a 58 in German racing silver.
If I posted pix I show the car but if interested there's plenty of google images of the car, some real sweet ones too. :aok

PS They put a V8 in before Carol did too.

..it's a damn shame Ford prices it up with the Corvette.
IMHO Ford should price that in the same ballpark as the Hemi Challenger..35k or so ..
..with the killer Shelby 40k or so ..instead of their pie-in-the-sky demands.
When I look for a hot rod price vs performance drives me ..and I cannot see payin more for less.

Oh no. The Wife is not afraid of the gas pedal. I am figuring using a stock late model LS engine from a Corvette to reduce the chances of her having to get too friendly with the local law enforcement crowd.
Although she has mentioned she would like to get it on the track and race me in the Cobra.
I should have never taught her how to rotate a car through a turn. It will be my undoing.

Stampf.....I hope you have luck finding a 68-69 Charger. The Dukes of hazrds car show trashed hundreds of them. I'm not kidding either.
When the couldn't find 68 parts...they went to 69s and so on. 68 Charger by far is the most beautiful to me. Tail lights the key and
side running (round) lights. A very good friend of mine owns at 68 Charger that they ordred and purchased in 1968. Don worked for Dodge
at the Twinsburg stamping plant here in Ohio. He ordred the basic Charger with a 383 he wanted a 4 speed in it (an 883). Dodge told him
that the 4 speeds only came in the R/Ts. Finally after some haggeling since he worked for Dodge he got to order the 4 speed.
Don and Ginger still have it to this day. It's a gorgeous silver with a black vinyl top and all original. I'll get some pics this summer when
I see Dave ( Hemi Cuda 70) and Don and Gingers Charger. BTW....Don and Gingers 4 speed Charger is only one of six.

I'm gonna be honest here, I'm kind of appalled by the aesthetic design of some cars back in the day. Of course I'm also appalled by aesthetic design on a lot of modern cars as well.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder :)
I was very much into performance
..however if the car looked decent I would look further into what it's capabilities were :)
A lot of the muscle cars of the era I did not think very much of
.. most of the AMC products were the SUCK for looks..
..their one major exception was the Javelin AMX ..that car was sexy from end-to-end.
Didn't much care for Chevelle past '65 .. they got sooo HUGE!
May as well have been Impala's .. big boats.
There were some great lookin big boats tho
.. the '68-'70 Road-Runner, GTX, Charger
..they looked good in any color from any angle.
They did not feel 'big' with a 440 yankin 'em around.
..and the Hemi .. -shakes head- . . just the sound they made
..a deep in your gut rumble that shook the asphalt you stood on.
A real howl as it wound up to 7k shift
..pure visceral experience as you were flattened in the seat and it just ate the road ahead.
Ya . .some hooked me bad :)

Sweet.
Ja, the thing with me and Chargers is an old, long story. I've had my share of nice ones, the 71 being just the latest in a long line. I am spoiled or just too picky...and poor I quess...to find/restore/purchase/afford...lol...the one I want. Back in my twenties I went out to Calif, with my band to make it big and be a rock star...and while out there I found a nice 70 roadrunner 440 4 speed air grabber. Ever since that car, any Mopar I have done that is automatic...has left me feeling...well...short sticked...if you know what I mean. The biggest reason I purchased the blackbird was the factory manual 3 speed. The only Charger that's gonna hold my interest now, enough to purchase or rebuild...would be an original RT or Hemi 4 speed. So...you know the odds of that happening are slim. Over the years, I have had nice examples of all the big four...Cudas, Challengers, Chargers and RR's... would love to have some of them back today...but...I also always had a soft spot for the 60's GTO's and then the firebirds.
We'll see. Knowing me...I'll sell the firebird after a season of driving it...and be on to the next project. Half the fun for me is bringing em back to life.
EDIT: And the guy who owns this now...is glad I enjoy bringing them back.
