Title: Sportsmanship
Post by: BaldEagl on January 20, 2013, 11:34:41 AM
Who in the game would you nominate as sportsam of the year 2012?  This should be someone who fights hard, never complains or puffs their chest and maybe gives a salute for a fight well fought.  They should also carry themselves this way on the BBs (if they partake) as well as in-game.

I'll throw my initial vote out to 999000.  Who do you feel is deserving?

Post by: Triton28 on January 20, 2013, 11:43:00 AM
Probably several deserving,  but I wouldn't argue with 999000.   A class act for sure.    :salute

And let's actually do this.  We all get put off by the "look at me"  stuff that goes on.   Let's try to recognize those who do it the right way.  :aok

I would nominate 2 people,

DR7, because he shows no loalty to one country and no matter which country he goes to he gets mad respect from everyone.

999000 also for the same reasons.

I want to nominate a group of players.

All those "little people" who will never make it BBS fame - Getting shot down again and again, yet don't clog up CH200 or country with their whines about how much enemy, puffy or anything else sucks, totally unlike many of our K/D 3+ divas...

I think Latrobe deserves a nomination here as well.  He fights hard, is quick to return a salute, puts himself in situations where he is frequently outnumbered but never complains about it or rants on 200.  MOST IMPORTANTLY his contributions to the forum are always positive.  He is quick to offer help and answer questions and doesn't feed the trolls like so many others do.  Oh, and he happens to be a very good stick too.

There are probably other vets like this whose names are escaping me at the moment.  There are likely some who deserve more recognition for the classy way they play the game, but aren't recognized because they don't do their fighting on 200 or here on the forum.  I for one have never understood why some people think their post count is a badge of honor.  I respect the players who don't contribute to the daily muck, but always contribute something positive to the forum when they do post.

It will be interesting to see how far a thread goes when people are asked to say something nice about somebody else as compared to "look at me" and mud-slinging posts.

+1 to the OP, great topic!

hmm are there 2 latrobes?  for me its Messiah, LilMak, Oddcaf.. Odd is my teammate and when you follow him around, you cant help but learn and have good fun. when he lands kills he gets many many green salutes bc his whole team knows what a go getter he is. i havent outflown and beat Messiah and LilMak bc they are badasses in our juggie wuggies. they are always so nice to me and mentor me. dont think ive seen them complain a bit. most of the uber guys are flat out unwilling to teach and help. they dont want competition, they want status quo. my nominees thrive on competition and are extra nice about it too.

The "uber sticks" not only want, but need, good competition. The only way to insure that is by helping people get better. Similarly, you will never see someone like SkyRock attack a total newbie on the radio. No, we call people out that know better but fly their weak ways anyway. just from my own experience only, most of the guys i think are uber in their planes didnt answer my questions. but, to offset that, the 3 or so that have, not only answered my questions, they went out of their way to to show me their chops and tell me how i couldve done this or that. like dolby one night when i was still trying to find my style and my plane. i was a k4. he was smoking me over and over. finally on 200 i say man i just cant seem to find a way to a gun solution. he says, you know what, meet me over the water. we did about 10 merges, each one hes typing in the middle of the fight, walking me through the motions. he literally couldve killed me on everyone of those merges, but instead, he said, ok reset, try it again. when he knew i had absorbed as much as i could. he tells me, practice those things and let em branch out and you can only get better. then he smoked me again, haha. now, part of my style is clearly influenced by that session. so times like that more than make up for the guys who could care less. and really the lessons ive gotten have been enough to keep me busy for a good long while. and they were so good that the next steps in my progression are coming naturally. so its almost like you only need a few guys to help ya anyway. if that makes sense.

My votes and respect go out to a lot of people for 'sportsmanship' including:

Latrobe, 999000, Ink, Copprhed, Zaphod, wagger, nrshida, most of 71 Squadron RAF, pretty much everyone in the 80th BG HeadHunters, Greebo, Doc72CH, the list goes on, that's just off the top of my head.

I can't say whether of not JOACH1M is a good sport of not when you kill him as he's usually the one killing me...  :bhead  :furious

Well, I won't say I've never attacked newbs on 200......

 :noid

but yes, they do get a pass... for now....

now the fellas(usually vets that know better) that I see who always, always hover the fight, pick in numbers, and run at the first thing that even resembles a co-alt engagement do not get a pass...  even more lame is when they send you a <S> after a 4vs1 pick to portray "sportsmanship"...
Flying around and milking the community for score without ever giving a "fight" back is not sportsmanship, its bushleague pansiness!

True sportsman in the game, old sticks like 999000, OddCAF, Greebo, and others that slip my mind atm... and some new sticks like.. well, Wrath, paleoguy, and latrobe....  from my experience. :aok

Some in this list are no longer in the game as noted.

I think these lists are rather subjective. Many in the list are simply very nice people to play the game with. Others are absolute grouches until they are helping you to learn ACM. Quality is quality whether you are grading cactuses or orchids.

I would vote for 999000 as number one. He was just as classy when I met him back in AW on the wrong end of his B17's tail guns as he is today 20 years later. I can not remember a time in the last 11 years oldman didn't compliment each person he fought with in the CT\AvA after the fight no matter who won.

In my experience I have to disagree with the part regarding uber guys not wanting to help.  Everytime I have ever PM'd one of them after flat out thumping me in a fight or just seeing them in country have been more than willing to give advice.  That's just my experience with the ones I have PM'd....off the top of my head:   Stang, Joach1m, Ink (Jetsom), Redbull, Skyrock...some others I'm sure... I can't remember.  They were always willing to give out advice or information that I asked for.  The other guys mentioned in the post that I have talked to have also been good guys.  I have gotten rage PM's, but not from any of the guys that I would consider uber.

Not saying you haven't had bad experiences in that regard...just saying I haven't.  I think the attitude of keeping "secrets" or not wanting competition would be more likely in someone with a more middle of the roadish ability.

I've not been in the DA/TA with any of them yet but not because they haven't offered.  The schedules just haven't meshed for it.  If there is a good time for it I would love to know so I can plan for it....really want to join in on that if possible.

Thank you for the many honourable mentions but I must decline to agree. Presently I am not being very Gentlemanly at all, I have had some distasteful experiences in game and most especially on this forum with some of the more abhorrent facets of human personalities which has taken its toll on my normal Zen deportment. I can only attribute my reduced tolerance to the rather stressful half year Mrs Shida and I have been experiencing since the premature birth of Tiny Shida. I am rather tired all of the time and am presently not able to think with the clarity and patience I once had. In the words of Spock:

I've recently asked a very skilled 1 vs 1 player to go to the DA. I came across him in the MA and he killed me very fast in a 1 vs 1 "in my ride" while he was pretty new in the same plane than me.

71 Sqd. appreciates the kind mention...Thanks!!!

Shida Sir, everyone has days when something or someone gets under your skin that would
at any other time not even be a bother.
I can't imagine the stress and anxieties that you and Mrs. went through this past Summer.
Thank God things turned out well.
I've never seen you say or do anything in game or here that I would say was rude, condescending, hurtfull etc.

I'd say of all the people I've run into in the game, mbailey, thndregg and waystin are the three I'd give the nod to for best sport.

Mbailey, I first ran into him about two years ago, his spitfire vs. My FM2. We found each other three straight times over some base. I shot him down twice, once with a questionable front-quarter deflection. He had every right to be frustrated and complain on 200, but instead he sent me a PM complimenting me on how well I was flying the wildcat. He's always friendly on range, and an all-around class act.

I've known thndregg since I started playing, and he was one of the guys who took me under his wing to teach me how to fly, fight and bomb in the B-17. While I was never a member of the 91st BG, he always made me feel welcome on their runs. I remember when he scheduled a squad night at 1 in the afternoon so BQ 82 could fly with us from Iraq. He's always a great guy to run into.

Waystin is always friendly to everyone, and he will go out of his way to clear your 6 in a fight. He's fun to fly with, and great to work with on a command staff for scenarios.

hmm are there 2 latrobes?  for me its Messiah, LilMak, Oddcaf..

This is simpley, not to be insulting, due to an misinterpretation of what "the uber guys" are.  Those whom you're thinking of, are not uber except at gaming the game for score.  They won't show or teach you because they teach you how to always coem in 10k above the fight and run like hell at the first sign of loosing that advantage in the area.  Or how to only run attack sorties until you have a friendly CV right offshore of an enemy base or find a friendly horde deacking a field (and, thusm, come in behind and 10k above the rest of your friendlies).  Their skill is due in part as much (if not more) because of their understanding of utilisign the scoring system to their favor as it is to their ability to dogfight in combat.

You are damn right about Messiah though, especialy in a jug (and he likes to help/teach to others what he can), just last night I belovingly refered to him as "the only guy that I can screw up setting the target up in a rope for and ALWAYS (almost) makes a kill shot anyways.

Similarly, you will never see someone like SkyRock attack a total newbie on the radio.

buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

sorry charlie, but that is the wrong answer. Mr. Rock has in the past had little control over his "radio." Noobs included. I've seen it. Though I'm working from memory and I thinks a recent lifestyle alteration might have tempered him a bit. I hope to see that you are right next time I stop by.

Wrong again on all counts cheap bottle. My problem was ONLY with your response, LOL at the "bitter envy of SR," and as I said in not so many words, maybe he changed. I actually have been quite impressed with what behavior I have seen of his on these forums. It hasn't at all been like what I used to see on channel 200. But maybe he was only like that on 200. I don't know and I don't care.

That may be SkyRock, but I remember getting back into the game after maybe a year or more of being out and wasn't using my handle, so you didn't know me from Adam. By pure coincidence you took off at the same base and started talking watermelon about this noob beside you flying an La7, LOL. I hadn't said anything to you or been anywhere near you prior to that and you sure as hell didn't know who I was. Maybe you were drunk, or maybe just being your usual self.

The last time I saw you in the MA a couple years ago we fought in Corsairs. Was a friendly and respectful encounter, but I was using my handle then.

Now maybe you will take my comment for what it was, a poorly thought out cautionary note. But you were at least top 3 if not #1 in the pot stirring category for a long time. Have you really changed that much? If you have then congratulations on the maturity and I expect to see that in your response here. If you haven't I expect to see the same knee jerk reaction you and cheap whiskey just spouted.

maturity is not something I correlate to playing online video games... I play this game much different than I would play chess... or basketball...  only people from this game know me as SkyRock...

He's an absolute riot on vox, and will make your day no matter what. I'll never forget the time when i was on a different country as him, trying to make it home in a F4F with half a wing.

Maybe if he wasn't piss drunk.

There I was, minding my own business, when I heard Floatsup's cries for help over vox.  There he was on the deck, running from something or other.  So, I dropped in to break the bad guy off and then ended up in trouble myself.  Meanwhile, Floatsup is yelling at me on vox: "Snuggie?!  What kind of f...ed up kinda name is that?  You must be a f...ing f...ot!" as he left me hung out to dry and then went and landed his kills.  Real sportsman-like right there.
