Hi guys. I haven't played in a while (except for four hours of the Target for Today scenario). In fact, other than that, I don't think I've played since the Battle Over the Winter Line scenario. A lot of things contribute to this; boredom, player numbers, dar being constantly down and the suggestion by a trainer that I wasn't very good. I guess after 19 years he was right so I stopped playing. I've still been lurking around the boards a little but not like I used to.
During this time I bought my first smart phone. I was a relatively early adopter of cell phones but when I lost my job for over a year I dropped mine due to cost and went several years without one. After moving a couple of years ago I'd bundled my TV, phone and Internet with Comcast but if my cable went out I was dead in the water. So, for that reason and the fact that I hate Comcast I dropped their TV (the building I live in offers it free at a level I'm happy with) and phone service.
So being a first time smart phone owner and having always liked racing games on my PC I downloaded Real Racing 3 despite my vow to never support anything by EA (after the Air Warriors debacle). I know, I know... in-app purchases... ugh! Well, it turns out that I'm now about 1/3 of the way through the game both in terms of events and cars purchased (with in-race earnings) and have spent $1.99 in real money simply to get the in-app ads to turn off. I had been thinking I'd be willing to pay for the game to not have the ads but an Internet search told me to make any in-app purchase and they'd go away so I essentially bought the game for $1.99. It's fun, the graphics are awesome, the physics are good and you can compete online against other players. All of this and I don't need anything other than my smart phone and $1.99. Not only that but I have my choice of touch or tilt controls.
So while I've been whiling away my time playing Real Racing on my cell phone I've been pondering the decline of Aces High. I notice that World of Tanks is also available for Android (but haven't tried it... yet). How can a game like Aces High, that requires a pretty good computer, special controls (if you want to do it right) and a $15/mo. subscription compete with this? Frankly, in the long run, I don't think it can without getting where the customers are, and there are more of them walking around with a smart phone than there are sitting in front of a computer at any given moment.
I'll admit that my PC racing games have higher fidelity than Real Racing but it's not that far off. I have to believe that HT could create a suitable version of AH for mobile devices, if only as a means to draw people into the game on PC. And if they don't go for the PC version that's OK as long as he can find a way to monetize the mobile app.
I know some think the new graphics update is going to draw people back into the game and, to some degree so do I but it's mostly not going to be new blood, but older players returning to check out the changes.
Buying this cell phone has really opened my eyes to the possibilities and as these things get more refined and more powerful I think it's going to be a rough road ahead for most PC games. I had been thinking about upgrading my desktop a while back but am coming to the realization that the only reason to do that is for AH. Outside of that my laptop and smart phone do everything I need. How many people can you convince to spend $1000+ on a computer, $100 on controllers and $15/mo. on a subscription just to play a game? A few I'm sure but it seems to me the competitive landscape of PC gaming is changing and doing so rapidly.
I'm sure HT is already thinking about this if not working on it. If not he may be the last buggy whip manufacturer.

PC games are thriving right now. It's the best time ever to me a PC gamer. Most major console titles are also released on PC and the F2P genre of online games are almost PC exclusive. Indie game developers are also almost exclusively developing for the PC platform.

This OP is the best reason that the BBS should only be available to paying players.

And I 100% disagree with you. Have to be a paying player to still be part of the community? Moronic idea.

While PC games are enjoying a slight revival and doing increased sales these last couple of years compared to the previous few years (when PC gaming declined due to the economy downturn), console games still make up the majority of game sales. Nor are F2P online games almost exclusive to PC games, you'll find that F2P online games make up the majority of mobile gaming platforms and are marketed towards the mobile market much more than PCs, due to the popularity of mobile gaming outside of the US. In addition, indie developers aren't almost exclusively developing for the PC platform, again mobile gaming and console platforms are popular with indie developers because of the lower cost to develop for mobile and console platforms and don't require to sell their souls to get major funding to develop a PC game.
The founder of CD Projekt recently commented on the fact if it wasn't for them developing The Witcher 3 for both consoles and PCs, they'd never would have been able to make the game that they did if it was just a PC exclusive. They wouldn't have had the resources or the money to make the game as they envisioned it.

World War 2 online forum ran similar to what we have here then they changed it to only paid subscriptions could post to cut down on the endless grieving from people who weren't playing the game I guess but all in all it hurt the community as a whole. everyone has ideas or suggestions weither there paying subscribers or not and they should be listened to.

So, can any of you tell me how I would run AH2 on this thing?
http://www.razerzone.com/gaming-systems/razer-edge-pro
I keep seeing companies who wanted us all to move onto smart this and smart that coming out with PC compatible this PC compatible that Win8 OS is loaded.
Anyone remember playing AW on a 15 inch monitor? I watch kids around me playing very complex games happily on things I can barely make out what is who while looking over their shoulders.
The biggest mistake you can make in assessing anything, is to assume your perspective from your position of "this is as obvious as..." is what is obvious. It gets worse as you get older creating unnecessary angst over phantoms you project into your perception analysis. You let emotions under the guise of experience trump digging for the real facts. You can really depress yourself all by your self.
PC as a standard based on an OS with peripherals is not dead. And it won't disappear any time soon. I suspect the iconoclastic tower concept will. But, something to hook up a joystick and play AH will be around for some time. The joystick might become a loose definition but, something to twiddle. Kids love to twiddle and manufactures love to make money.
BaldEgl and Ack Ack are two ends of a spectrum.
-
Ack-Ack, you have a tendency to extrapolate ad absurdum from what people write. While console gaming is leading in sales PC gaming has been leading in revenue since 2010, and that's the important statistic. Obviously if you can make a game for both markets that's much better than just one.

ummmm you do know that AK-AK works in the gaming industry and has for years.
-
And?
-
Well working for a major gaming software company I would think he has information at hand that someone NOT in the industry has and so can make better calls. Meaning I would trust his information more than any pictures you post.
-
That's your prerogative. I for one don't trust what anyone says on the internet (or in general) unless they back it up with something. Saying you work in the industry is not nearly enough.
-
This OP is the best reason that the BBS should only be available to paying players.
I've been paying longer than you've been around and still am.
-
I have a smart phone also. I downloaded for free a radio controlled airplane app. You can barely operate the plane and it's a touch screen game.
Aces High is too complex a game to be handled as an app. Even a tablet would be slightly better.
A home gaming system would even have a hard time competing with a PC.
The only true future for this game to increase the player base is social media, player referrals and Hitech Creations implementing a broadbased advertising strategy.
As a former salesman, the biggest selling point is the game is FREE!!! Next, is low monthly subscription rate. Unbeatable combination.
I am just a basic computer user that surfs the net and plays games and stream Netflix and Hulu. There are dozens of Aces High players who know way more than me and can create social media ways to get the message out.
Simple ways :
1. Facebook
2. Twitter
3. YouTube
4. Squad websites
They are used. Just need a way for someone to correlate an online movement. Someone who understands the social media. Jusy need someone to step up and carry the ball.
HiTech does what they feel is right. It's their game. Players can help spread the word.
If I win a lotto jackpot, I will open an Aces High internet cafe. Set up 50 gaming stations and 50 game accounts. People walk in and sit down and play free of charge. Get them hooked. Maybe, Hitech let me sell some Aces High T-shirts and stuff to offset cost. :)
Always ideas to be tossed around.

it's a niche game, has been for 20+ yrs
it's always been dying also.

I remember those posts. AH is dying, dead, etc, etc. While it can be annoying, some of those posts have been funny. :)

Aces high rocks. If you have complaints keep it to yourself. I still wonder....you don't like it move on. Go play bubble shooter or something man. Geez
-
I learned of aces high from their TV commercials, as did quite a few others. Always wondered why they don't go back to them.
-
I would like to see Aces High played on triple smart phone screens...
Actually, thinking about it further that would not be as absurd as it first seems. Combining the facts that smart phones have a built-in position sensor and Oculus Rift used regular Samsung smart phone screens in some of their versions, a visor for two smart phones could serve as a 3D monitor, the third being for maneuvering. Ooh! Just think about all of the gadget freaks out there!

Hitech, I don't know if it will help but, post something for them to go anal on. they are way past eating their young.............

On what information do you base that? I started with AW via Geni.

Have I broken any rules or been out of line since I haven't payed in 2 years? I agree some of the non-payers have been a nuisance on the BBS, but we shouldn't put everyone in one basket.
-

Because the channels they advertised on are no longer there. History channel, Military channel, Airpower (or whatever it was called, I forget). These channels had the perfect target audience for Aces High. They either disappeared, or they changed to something else.

True. AH's supportive community can transcend active accounts and veteran players are welcomed back with open arms. Likewise, disruptive and negative influences may have active accounts until certain lines are crossed. I'm for supporting a game I like and I don't care about account status except for those who cancel then hang out to cheer on the demise of AH (and that ain't you, B). :salute
-
I play games on my phone but would not play AH on it. It was always an immersive experience, in my office, away from distractions, limited wife ack,, ect. Was even better before I tuned to 200.
-
The social media route would be a good place to start (does HTC even have a Facebook page or Pinterest page?). Twitter would be a waste of time right now...How many times can you receive the tweet, "Two more weeks", before you stop following? As for TV or other advertising, the cost-benefit analysis rules all; if you're not making more in new business than the cost of the advertising, than you don't do it. Of course, if you could turn the game into a professional sport (got to be more interesting than watching people play poker or Texas Hold'em!!!) and get a show on a cable channel, that might help. Make it a team sport, and the TV show would televise matches (maybe a team from each state for "the Nationals"). Interspersed with matches would be short segment featuring interviews with actual combat pilots, reviews of gaming equipment, "how-to" videos on building the "ultimate" gaming rig or sim-pit. Just an idea...

I still have all these channels...

I've noted increasing number of friends and family that are getting tired of the little screens.
-
My $0.02 here is that AH does need a mobile presence... perhaps an app that lets you check the status of the map... maybe a player roster... you can see if your buddy is on...maybe an alert when your buddy logs on... I don't see a way to play AH on a phone but it can put AH back in your head when you away from the game.

Actually, that's a terrific idea, Todd! Could include alerts when map resets occur, or special events are pending. That's a great way to use mobile apps for AH. :salute

This OP is the best reason that the BBS should only be available to paying players.
The OP has also contributed far more to the AH community than you have. Just because he maybe inactive right now should not preclude him from being able to voice his opinion on how the game should evolve.

Why not ask for a payment model of one month at a time for $14.95 purchased from the AH WEB site.
You can at any time increase the number of months by purchasing additional time. Like Virgin's pay to play minutes for your cell phone. Just pay for a month to play as the minimum time frame. But, then it may be cheaper for HTC if you just call HTC and drop your card number or other payment vehicles for one month at a time. I've heard it's a delightful treat to speak with the very nice lady who answers the phone and helps you through such things. Bentnail always liked speaking with her.
Wonder if vHACKv can't get his parents to pony up a card at this time. Maybe he could snail mail HTC 15 one dollar bills near the end of each month. I've never known people who are as clever on the internet as he, to not be able to scrounge up that amount to throw away on things each month. Maybe he uses it up on his monthly church tithing.

Lol, troll
That's just what the receptionist wants to do, deal with 2000 aviation nerds a month. ( that's only about 65 a day, then she can get on with her day) I understand you run a cartoon squad. However leave the business to the experienced experts.
Telling others how to run their business is like picking another mans nose. It is just bad etticite, did your mother not teach you manors? As a multiple business owner myself I encounter this daily.
Hey bustr is this you doing some crowd funding?

Hey Meatwad, give me the snikkers. He's probably a few cases in of owing friends and family snikkers and back rent by now. His Marvin Bakari links all died around the internet.
Unless he scammed the $64M for his new Gulfstream and is on his way to hide in Honduras already. Or is that a different public persona on another channel? I just can't keep these internet personalities straight anymore since anyone can claim anything other than their choice of syntactic parenthetics. Kind of like finger prints, but a structure signature from ones subconscious in sentence creation. You would almost need to have multiple personality disorder to create completely different ones for different audiences. Putting on a wig and fishnets doesn't change the single personality sitting at the keyboard.
His kind of reminds me of a past denizen of our forums. Blu, maybe even poison, or one of the perma banned from the 12 hour rebellion.

Some online games are free but they suck money from those willing to buy there way to higher levels in the game. Something like 10 cents a minute for a 262 or tempest or perked gv. In the mind a 10 minute flight is only a buck so why not but it adds up real quick.
But I will note again the monthly payment is kind of a filter for bad players albeit it doesn't work for the trashy hq hitters.

You already can use your smartphone in AH. Pand Strat Maps (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,346706.msg4578869.html#msg4578869) are available as PDF, reducing the risk of hiding an approaching enemy behind the clipboard.

I do not know of many "Free" online games, many have a free component. In fact AH is also free under your definition. You can play missions offline with out any charge.

HT's Steal the Sheep game (posted here: http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,372833.0.html) is a perfect example of the type of play that would translate well to mobile.
Another aspect that would translate well would be a pilots school where you compete to advance from basic controls to BFM to ACM to free combat. Along the way you could earn aircraft flying in different theaters. There could be a parallel GV path and once you've completed the game you're signed up for a two week free trial online with at least some idea of what to do. Another idea would be to credit earned aircraft with perks when you first log on with your PC.
I'm sure it would have to be different/limited/dumbed down from the current online game but could still be fun and be a great way to introduce more players to the game.

This game would not translate well to a mobile platform like smart phones/tablets due to one simple reason, controls.
In Real Racing 3 you have the option of using tilt control to steer with tap/hold controls for brakes/acceleration. Alternately you can use touch control to steer where a little steering wheel appears on your screen and you simply follow it's outline to steer. I don't see why a similar touch/hold control couldn't simulate the stick in an aircraft with separate touch controls for flaps and possibly even rudder or throttle.
You'd lose the view system so some type of automatic tracking would have to be developed and, like I said, some of what we enjoy online would have to be modified/dumbed down/made automatic for the platform but it seems feasible.
-
This would end up being two games with two different communities where pure air combat is concerned. I can play the GV game and manned guns from my wife's Laptop using a mouse. That might allow for some tablet fun on the road if your WiFi doesn't lag you out and the game can be installed.
But the core air combat simulator will need controllers. And funny, you see a lot of evolving solutions for tablets like this coming onto the market. First is if our game will ever have a version that will run on current tablets. Or if tablets will evolve for the gamer Win OS market.

I cant wrap my head around something close to the current way AH works crossing over to a phone. I do elevators, rudder, ailerons, fire and view with my right hand and sometimes all once. With my left I do throttle, flaps, gear, radio, zoom, weapon toggle, map and misc other stuff.
I think a tablet/phone version would have to be pretty simple and basically not AH.

There's already a bunch of tablets that should run AH at some level, like these: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2417564,00.asp (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2417564,00.asp). Some of them even have a USB port where you can connect a powered hub for all of your gaming gear. I suppose they use Intel graphics which is known to cause issues in AH, but development keeps developing every day.
Kinda scary...

I saw WWII online asked its players to crowd fund their next game update.....then to buy new hardware ....then to continue game development. I remember them saying it was free to play ....obviously nothing is "free" .

I've been sporadic lately. But that is good. When I played Sunday I had a great time. Saturday was good too.
Saturday I came on just as someone was saying a cv was by one of our bases. Well it was a bit out. I found it and sunk it. Then I upped with my squadies and landed 6 kills. Then a squadie said a cv came so close to ours it scratched. I jumped in a 5 incher and scored the kill on that. Then back in a fighter for a couple of sorties. The 49th was in a fun mood and came over to duke it out. It was fun! <S> 49th for the gracious attitude you displayed.
One more sortie against an overwhelming force and I some how made a landing though missing some parts. Heck I could hardly turn. It was great!

BaldEagle touched on something good here, with potential. No, you can't fly the game on a phone or tablet, just like you can't play World of Warcraft on a phone or tablet. But what can you do on an app? Stay Immersed. In WoW, you can go into your auction, check out characters, chat, and basically interact in the game without killing trolls.
Back in the day, one of my favorite games to play was Motor City Online, multi player racing game, fun stuff. It had a full blown economy, buying parts, trading parts, racing for pinks, anything you could think of. Had it survived, it could easily have evolved into an economy where you could use the apps to buy parts, sell parts, manage your inventory.
It's not too far fetched to keep people addicted to a game outside of the game. There could be training courses created to teach you ACM, Flight Mechanics, History, all sorts of reasons to log in during a break, read, study, play mini games, all geared towards progressing your Main Arena or even Scenario status. Maybe along with the "all planes available" main arena, you can generate perk points to purchase your own plane, and repair it as you damage it, and out of the game you can buy parts, trade parts, improve and modify your plane.
Not saying it will or even should be done, but what BaldEagle brought up was options and a desire for expansion, frankly, anything can be done, it's a game, and you can bring new elements into a game that don't disrupt the existing format. Think about it, the game is so addicting we are looking for other reasons and ways to play it. Not a bad thing at all.

there's no reason to think we won't be able to in the immediate future.
