technique can only get you as far as your equipment allows, PS for me is a cheap stop-gap measure. i can't justify spending 4k for a pro body and 8k on a 2.8 F tele pro lens. It won't give me anything near the same quality pics, but i'm not deleting as many as before.

recording actions and batch processing, sharpening with a layer mask, exposure bracketing layering, adjusting levels for a better dynamic range, cloning to remove unwanted background objects, just to name a few. heck, PS with a click of a button can resizes multiple hi-res shots and then generate webpage galleries, including thumbnails and linking. one of the most usefull tools is the browser.

my nextdoor neighbour owns a small software company, i just had to take a few pics of his harley and got a reg copy for $100.

I don't agree, a good photographer can take photos with anything. Your better off spending more time taking photos then more hours in PS. It's more about light and capturing the right moment so to speak then anything at all to do with PS and mega lens and bodies.

Some people walk around with a bag full of lens and flashes yet still can't take a decent photo to make a postcard let alone create enough work for a decent portfolio.

Bah. A good photographer can take photos with just about anything. A good photographer -- film or digital -- does postprocessing too. A good photographer may be taking pictures with a point-and-shoot camera with crappy dynamic range, and need to take three pictures at different f-stop settings, then use the "curves" feature to compress them. A good photographer may be at a once-in-a-lifetime site/event, and find the background to be far brighter than the subject, and a lot of dead digital space in between, and might find it prudent to "cut out the middle" of the picture.
A good photographer might have a couple of hot pixels that need to be mapped out.
A good photographer might take a picture in RAW format and need to set the levels individually and by sector.
And yes, good photographers take tons and tons of pictures, analyze them for ways to improve them, and very few of them make it all the way to the "finished" stage.
There's no substitute for being a good photographer: you can't "add in" composition or image data later. But processing with PS allows you to maximize the impact of the photographs taken. It's called workflow, and there's room for skill and artistry at every stage.

Like I said before, I'd rather be out taking more photos increasing my workflow and improving my skills that way rather then being indoors pi**ing about with PS and expecting it to fix my mistakes.

Yeah, but who said photoshop was there to fix mistakes?

That's like saying barbecue grills exist to cover the taste of spoiled meat.

It is a tool for the photographer.  And like any tool, there is a place and time for it to be used.  Artists use more than one brush to complete thier works.

I also would remind everyone, we at HTC do not appreciate nor will tolerate discussions, on our bulletin board, on how to steal software.  It should not even have to be said and in that light, it is the last warning.

Yeah? And who's paying your day rate, and what is it? How many asistants are you using, and how much are you paying the stylist? How long do you have the location for? How long do you have your subject for?

The statement below is true.

Photoshop is the industry standard which all others wish to become. It is that good.

Torque, AWESOME job both in photography and Photoshop.
If you haven't yet, spend the $149.00 and get the CS2 upgrade. You're going to love it.

"The Gimp" is definitely a great alternative if you don't want to spend the $$$ for Photoshop.  I use it quite a bit (need to download the latest version), both for photo editing and for building skins for 3D computer models.

I didn't realise this subject was exclusive to professionals shooting models.

I guessed that. Most professionals don't go to Asia to buy ripped-off software.
