I am hearing about a cargo ship that lost its engines as it was leaving Port Arthur to get out of the path of the storm and the Coast Guard is not able to go get the people off the ship.  Those people need our prayers.

I've heard the Coast Guard rethinking that decision to not get out there. Apparently, if the freighter drifts off in certain directions, it will make it more plausable for the CG to safely get a helicopter out there. Seems like that window of availability is coming to a close though.

Yeah, that really sucks that they are unable to rescue the crew.  It will put the Coast Guard in danger to even make it plausible thus resluting in more injured or heaven forbid, death.

Another interesting tidbit: The Galveston jail hasn't been evacuated. I'm a little bit surprised to have heard that they left about 1000 prisoners & staff at the jail.  With as structured & procedure oriented as a jail must be, seems like they'd be the first one with a solid evacuation procedure.

Then again, it is probably the safest... structural wise that is.

I could see the jailer hanging the keys just mere inches out of reach from the offenders.

Ok, there is a LOT of water hitting the island, and this is just the leading edge of the storm, they haven't seen the surge yet.

Look how much flooding there is already:

Good luck to all of you standing your ground... and the same to all who got their kids and pets outta the way first.

Freeport ehh?  I surf at Surfside, I think freeport is going to be under water... good thing they aare all on stilts.

Wife from Bay City, well more towards Matagorda Bay.  Friends and co-workers here in VA from there too.  Aunt in law and cousins in Old Ocean, Sweeney, Freeport, Surfside, Polaces, Brazoria, & West Columbia.  Some have left, some are gonna ride it out, hope there isn't too much damage.

I love what they told the three idiots riding it out in Jamaica Beach, "keep some sort of identification on you for later identification".

Last I heard there was no plan to evac Houston. Evacuating Houston during Rita cost 110 lives while the hurricane itself killed only 9.

They've got Houston & the surrounding areas divided into sections, designated by either numbers or letters.  Some sections they asked to evacuate, other sections they asked to shelter in place.  I did hear not too long ago that they expected 20 ft. surge at Baytown, though.... which is getting kinda dang close to where my in-laws are.

I have several close friends who live in Houston that were not told to evacuate, voluntarily or mandatory but have left anyway.  Couple of them went on to Lampasas to family and another couple coming here to stay with me in Bryan.  I ‘m glad they got out, storms are too unpredictable.  We are still going to catch a piece up here but hopefully not as bad.  It’s almost here…Good luck Whiteman, RattFink, Dnil, all <S>

east, south east side makes sence to evac, west and north west evac just clogs up the roads and you get the Rita mess all over again.
