Just for the sake of nitpicking and trivia.

Bourbon may be whisky,

"According to the United States Federal Law, Bourbon must be distilled from a mash at least 51 percent of corn, at between 80 to 160 proof. Barley, wheat, rye may be used for blending. Bourbon's sweetness and softness comes from corn. Bourbon is distilled in a continuous still first and then transferred to oak casks for aging. Bourbon must be aged for a minimum of 2 years in oak casks based on US regulation. "

Hmm, I thought that Bourbon had to be made in Kentucky, but apparently it can be made anywhere in the US.  However foreign Bourbons are not allowed to be sold in the US.

but it cannot be Scotch.

"What is Scotch Whisky?
Whisky is a matured, distilled alcoholic liquor made from the fermented mash of grain. The word comes from the Gaelic uisge beatha meaning "water of life." To be called Scotch, it must be aged in oak barrels, in Scotland, for at least three years."

Habu I wasn't tryin to say you are one of those Eurosnobs.  I don't hardly know you.  But I have known a lot of people like the ones Kieran and I described, and they have reduced my interest in traveling abroad.

I took a long time to develop this opinion. I could not figure out why some Americans were so disliked and it only seemed to be Americans who had this happen to them. I finally figured it out after I had lived overseas for 2 or 3 years.

And it is not about food and drink. Food and drink are just very visible indicators of a whole attitude. When you accept local culture for what it is and indulge you will find you make friends overseas rather easily because you are in fact trying to blend in. When you never try them you  probably never try to fit in in any other way either like learning a few words of local language or learning to have fun like the locals do.

My first time overseas I lived in a dormitory for single men at a mine in South Africa. There were some British guys, some local guys and two Americans called Wayne and Dwane living there. We were all just out of school. In addition there were some pretty old and tough Afrikaner guys who lived there permanantly. If you know anything about South Africans they are probably some of the most hospitipal people in the world.

After about a month there Wayne ran into my room one day and told me a bunch of local Afrikaner miners who lived in the dorm were going to beat him up. I went upstairs and stopped the fight but the next day the locals were fired once the mine manager heard about it. I still feel bad those guys lost their jobs over such a dickhead as Wayne. He never tried to fit in and always wanted to tell South Africans what was wrong with their politics. I may not have supported aparthide but I had enough sense to keep my opinion on that subject to myself.

That is the attitude I was talking about.  I later worked with tons of Americans in Indonesia. Older and wiser they may have been but they were liked and liked being there. And that was a Muslim country as well. They showed me the best places to eat locally when I arrived. We used to get the occasional guy like Wayne transferring in but they never lasted long.

Will the low ranking military/blue collar types ever discover the world? Maybe they are too busy cleaning their collection of guns...

I'll make sure to give you a wide berth if I ever see you at a Con since you don't want to associate with the low ranking military types.

You ignorant amazinhunk, I went to Germany as a PFC when I was 18 years old and managed to spend 95% of my free time discovering the country's culture. I also managed to find space in my limited cranial capacity to visit Paris over Christmas (attended Christmas Mass at Notre Dame Cathedral), made several trips to Holland with no tour group/guide of any sort, and made numerous trips to northern Italy, Austria, the Czech Republic, etc.  The only thing unpleasant about Europe were those fools who immediately stereotyped you when they found out you were American. I found most of these folks in France. Of the other countries I visited, I have nothing but good things to say about their hospitality. I always regretted not making it to the UK, but I see I really didn't miss anything. Now piss off and stfu. I'm going to go clean my guns now.

You hit it right on the head, Habu. Trying to meddle in another person's country's politics is just asking for it. I mean, there is certainly room to discuss, but there comes a point where it becomes obsession.

Wives with a sense of humor are kinda fun. The pigtails and cheerleader outfits Thursday nights are just icing on the cake.

Heheh, so if we own a gun we are unintelligent. Beetle you are the type person who deserves to be tripped in the hallway.
I tried to overlook you but if I meet you I may show you how a rooster looks over a log     :D

I think I dislike you lots.

I stand corrected, the real name was "FlyingDuckSittingSwan". Still... I do think of him when I read a Beetle post...
