You're certainly entitled to your opinion; that's one of the principles my country was founded upon.

Re-read newguy's post. That may help you.

But I doubt it.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen!

Blind nationalistic loyalty seems to be a hallmark of Europe's history. We seem to have to be drug kicking and screaming into your slaughters.

We do send troops out to fight, there's no doubt about that. But there's no doubt about this, either:

Quote
Colin Powell:

We have gone forth from our shores repeatedly over the last hundred years and we’ve done this as recently as the last year in Afghanistan and put wonderful young men and women at risk, many of whom have lost their lives, and we have asked for nothing except enough ground to bury them in, and otherwise we have returned home to seek our own, you know, to seek our own lives in peace, to live our own lives in peace. But there comes a time when soft power or talking with evil will not work where, unfortunately, hard power is the only thing that works.

That's the difference. Newguy knows it and admires it. You know it too, Vidkun and it just eats away at you, doesn't it?

I think you hit the nail on the head there, this reflects the "normal world opinion" In a message board people tend to maximaze a certain problem, and screams loader than they would if they talked face to face.
I have abosolutly no problem with Americans, those ive met and know is just the same guy in the street like me, but living in another country.
Its easy to be bigmouthed in a messageboard, and some people seems too live their lifes in it, just to harass others.
I am a Norwegian eating my fish, and still let my wife mess me around in stupid shops...

No GSholz. I'm not speaking about generations ago. The US has stepped up to the plate on many recent occasions, and has taken a lot of flak every time. The thing is, if they didnt step up they would be critisized as well. The bottom line is that other countries are jealous of their power, and will take shots at them no matter what the circumstances. I guess this is natural.

The question of the original poster was which side would you be on in the event of a clash with europe. He did not give any circumstances, so maybe the question was too open ended, which made my too simple. My answer stemmed from the world climate as see I today. The US busting their butts to keep the world safe while certain countries in Europe snip at them at every turn, while not contributing any constructive answers. An no, I dont get all my news from FOX.

one of the strongest arguements for open
economic relationships with other countries is that it quickly negates the possibility of war.

we could not afford to go to war with japan, or europe...though im not sure about the kiwis...perhaps we should kick thier happy little assets.

nope.  nevermind.  they make sheep dont they?

hmmmmmm....

why bother, the pointlessness of controlling the UK is the only reason no one ever invades Britain, its just not worth it.

stay in the middle east, theres better pickings there :)

Well, Vidkun, whatever the “legitimacy” of origins of the Iraq conflict may be, one thing is clear. As a result of the invasion an extremely brutal dictator was removed from power. Additionally, the Iraqi people are going to get a chance to vote for a democratic form of government, a new future and the leaders to guide them for the first time in about 45 years.

Democracy won’t come easy; if they want it, they’ll have to be ready to risk their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor (to borrow a phrase). Even if it’s won, it’ll be hard to keep. However, they’ll have a better chance at keeping it than we did.

On Iraqi Election Day, Iraqis are going to die because there are still brutal men that fear freedom. On Iraqi Election Day, American soldiers and their true Allies are going to die trying to safeguard Iraqi voters.

In some nations with long histories of free elections, the Iraqi elections will be sneered at, will be considered fraudulent. The citizens of these nations will go to bed criticizing the American effort and dismissing the Iraqi election as unimportant and meaningless.

In other countries, some still under brutal dictators, the elections will be closely observed and envied. They will remember broadcast images of American soldiers and their true Allies doing their best to make sure every Iraqi that has the courage to create a new future for his country is able to cast his ballot. The citizens of these nations will go to bed praying that the Americans and their true Allies will someday, somehow come to help them as well.

So, I’ll make these predictions:

Were war to come between the US and Europe, it will be started by the Europeans.

If it comes, Americans will be very glad that people like you are on the other side; it’s difficult to fight when you have to be watching your ally behind you as close as your enemy in front of you.

Lastly, your side will lose. Big time. Then we’ll forgive you and rebuild you back better than you were before and give you another chance at free elections and democracy.

Finally, as Colin said, we’ll bury our dead once again and go home.

(BTW, looks like you flunked reading newguy's mind. Maybe the correspondence course will refund your tuition.

IF there was a war between Europe and America it wouldnt come to nukes. Not unless the Euro's were foolish enough to toss the first nuke. Then Europe would be one huge radioactive mess. Let's assume the Euro's tossed the first nuke.....my money is on the French to do the tossing.

If I was Norwegian I wouldnt fight for the Euro's, all I would be is cannon fodder for the French and Germans.
