In the situation you describe..... Any gun will do.

Give me any gun in that situation and I will make it work to get me any other gun that I might need. Lots of guns will be laying around all over the place.... Lots of guys will be there for me to relieve them of theirs.

Lever operated .22 magnum or a carbine, - with a scope.
Big enough for most things, but not too big.
(That means carrying, the noise, and destroying small prey)

Again, this thread really should be about scenario. Do we want to consider a gun to keep in the house, situation normal, but only allowed one?

Do we base our decisions on being out in the wilderness alone with only that one weapon to help us survive, or is it about societies collapse and the apopcalyptic scenario with man fighting man for survival?

Differant weapons would come to the top of the list in the differant survivors.

In the house? Either a 12 gauge pump, or a .45 auto.

In the wilderness? Springfield Armory M6 Scout.

SHTF - M1A in a Sage stock.

Isn't there some aviation related thread where you can make fun of me and call me dumb to provide you an outlet? It's a shame we can't keep this attitude of yours isolated into one topic but rather have it bleed into others as well.

Back on topic...

It's still a Remington 11-87. There's nothing out there it can't handle and with open sights have dropped whitetail deer in excess of 150 yds with the 3" mag copper solid sabots. 5 shots. Semi Auto. Simple, reliable and rugged. It's been submerged in water making my way to a duck blind. It's been covered in mud after slipping on a rainy day during turkey season. It's had dust all through everything sitting in a cornfield waiting for doves.

It's always been there. The very very few misfires were because of a damaged O-ring outside the magazine tube. That happened after about 8 years and thousands of rounds with somewhat regular cleaning. Never cleaned it after every use but after every season or a day on the trap/skeet/sporting clay range which usually was good for a couple hundred rounds.

The Personnel Halting and Stimulation Response rifle (PHASR) is a prototype non-lethal laser dazzler developed by the U.S. Department of Defense. Its purpose is to temporarily disorient and blind a target. Blinding laser weapons have been tested in the past, but were banned under the 1995 UN Protocol on Blinding Laser Weapons. The PHASR rifle, a low-intensity laser, can skirt this regulation, as the blinding effect is apparently temporary. It also uses a two-wavelength laser. The PHASR was developed at Kirtland Air Force Base, part of the Air Force Research Laboratory Directed Energy Directorate in New Mexico.

Why I'd choose this?

Because if i'm ever going to go aggro on something/someone I want them to KNOW its me. This thing will knock them out and then i can use the butt of the rifle to smash them to pulp.

Lasz is right...it would depend on the scenario...for no gun can adequately meet all one's needs: self-defense, small-game hunting, big-game hunting, plinking, etc.

Widewing is near the mark. The 44mag/44special is a good all around choice, especially in a lever action which is strong and reliable. The velocities of both these calibers would be enhanced by an 18 inch barrel, making both more effective for self-defense. For tackling potential enemies at distances greater than 100 yards, something else would be needed.

A semi-auto or bolt rifle in 22 mag. would also come close. The ammo would be fairly cheap; loads for small-game and self-defense can be had...and it can even be used on game as large as deer...as long as shot placement is a priority with the shooter.

If I had to pick only one, it would be one of those two.

But again, no gun could adequately meet all possible scenarios.

Whats your problem? I explained my choice of a perfect "one gun only" would be based on situation.

I would pick whatever gun was most appropriate for ridding the earth of the f$#@@ck nut who decided to pass the law limiting us to only one gun!!!

Ha, but seriously, I'm not really sure. I love my SKS, but it's not top of my list if money is no object. Neither would an AK, butif money is a factor a high quality AK would probably be my choice.

I really like my friend's AR15, but the cleaning issues make me hesitant. I've seen his fail to feed right when clean but lacking a little oil. .223 isnt a bad round all in all, but I like how my 7.62x39 will go right through a tree.

I also own a winchester 94 (30-30) and a remington 870. Both good choices in the bush rifle or shotgun catagory. The 94 is just so sexy and smooth. Still, if I catch a soon to be deceased burglar in my house, something semi-auto would be nice. 870s are awesome shotguns, but there's still something about the bayonet lug and slamfire capability of the winchester 97 (or norinco remake) that has a lot of apeal. What's scarryier than a shotgun being cocked in your face? A shotgun with a bayonet pointed at you!!!

Not sure if I really have the experience to call this one well, but I guess I'd have to say something around a .308 caliber with some kind of shotgun mounted underneath. Fantasy? mostly, but Im sure someone's tried it before.

Though a M16 w/ m203 would pack a nice little punch.....

I'm not going to keep the hijack going however your method of explaining could use a little fine tuning to be slightly less abrasive. After all I'm giving you exactly what you want (my own fault) by commenting to you about you. There's no more a subject you love and you've come to prove that on more than one occasion.

Just because someone doesn't agree with you doesn't make them wrong or you right for that matter.

The first gun that popped into my head was the Remington 870. That one mainly for durability reasons. Far stronger and better built than many shotguns costing 3 times the price, in riot gun configuration it can hold 7 3in. shells in either slug or some variation of shot configuration. It can be used to hunt everything from large game like deer and elk all the way down to rabbits and game birds just by varying what shells you carry. Of course you impose a restriction on range, but slugs are quite accurate out to around 100 yards. I doubt you'll be shooting farther than that with a rifle unless you have a scope.

I would feel close to nekkid with only a handgun. I'm just not good enough with them to make it worth betting my life on. I'm working on that, but I've been using shotguns since I was 8 years old. Give me a shotgun and a chance to pattern it, and I have all the self confidence in the world.

Granting that a small caliber rifle could be useful though, I think I already have the perfect "survival" gun in my closet. The Rossi 12ga. / 22mag. shotgun/rifle combo. In a matter of about 30 seconds I can swap between rifle or shotgun with a fast changing barrel. It's fairly short in overall length, not very heavy, and well balanced so it swings easily onto the target and is easy to hold there for as long as I need to. Granted its only single shot, but you can only shoot one at a time anyway, and I'm pretty good at firing and reloading single shots from long experience. I have considered replacing the 22mag. barrel with a .223 or a .17, but I have little experience with these rounds and their ballistics, so I feel more comfortable staying with what I know.
