I have the same rifle, albeit with wood furniture.



It took about 200 rounds through it to loosen up the action. I will eventually get a scope and mount for it. Quite accurate, but I'll never come to like the operating lever being so far out and on the left side to boot.

I'd like to put wood furniture on it, bring back the classic look to it.  The plastic that centery arms put on it is total crap.

Lots of really great choices in this thread.  Not just in this thread, 12-gauge shotguns seem to be the world's favorite gun.

Ironically, tonight the firing range just got in a new Auto-Ordnance M1 .30- cal. carbine, my fond memory that got this thread started.    

Oh wow wow wow wow!  That sucker feels as great as the first time I ever cradled it in the Air Force.

What a perfect gun.  

-- that clanky sound of the bolt,
-- the looseness yet aura of utter dependability,
-- the beautiful o-ring back sight with the unique front sight of blade flanked by outwardly bending guards,
-- the confidence building magazines,
-- the attractive just-right-size bullets,  
-- the serious sling arrangement,
-- even a bayonet holder (I know, don't stick one on in most locales),
-- the absolute ideal weight, length, balance, and overall feel for me.  

You never forget your first love (Mom was talking about mates, but it applies to weapons too).  

I don't really need one now.  At around $700 in walnut it's too expensive just to have one's lifelong absolute favorite gun.  

It would be an indulgence.  

Totally unjustifiable.

But ... if I could have only ... ONE gun ...

I must say, im not fond of the Garand because of its sight. Im much more comfortable with a Nagan sight.

If it was a "hard core desert island" survial question, then something fully automatic (selectable semi) in 7.62 or .303 with 30 round magazine, top and bottom rails to mount scopes, lasers, lights, bi-pods, etc.


I love my USP 45 and the ability to carry 13 rounds.

The Granand had one of the most sophisticated sights fielded during WW2, capable of both windage and elevation adjustment at the twist of two knobs. Also, it has a peep sight, which many (including myself) prefer. The worst sight, IMO, was the K98K sight, though maybe it's just my fading eyes.

Just got the new Greek SG Garand from CMP. I've got to take some photos and post them. Magnificent. Also have 16 clips loaded ready for the range :)

love my garand.    Like my k98's too but, like charon... I think they have the worst sights.

It matters not to me which gun I grab out of the safe...  If I want something else later I will just take it from whoever has it.

probly to start you want something you can conceal.
