Now the other day I thought I read that the a-26 was designed to replace the b25 and other planes. If this was true, I might sway my personal vote to a26 instead.
The development of the A-26B and C (begun in the early 1940's) was meant to replace 3 planes in particular: the A-20 Havoc, the B-26 Marauder, and the B-25 Mitchell, which were all early war (late 1930's) designs.
It was also initially designed to offer a 75mm cannon in the B-version as an option, but banks of .50's using API rounds proved to be better at strafing and anti-shipping operations after the first 30 block 5's were delivered with the 75mm mount.
There was also the A-26A version, a night fighter/bomber destroyer with .50's and 2-4 X 37mm cannons (2 in the nose, 2 in bomb-bay gun pod), and on-board radar, but German heavy bomber threat subsided by the time of final selection, and the P-61 Black Widow won the contract to be built instead of the A-26A.
