Out of boredom, The video above, this guy has a major flaw in his over-processing.

I worked 2-3 of Aldean's shows, but I was not mixing. This meant that during show I could go out front and listen.
Of course I listen to each instrument and critique the mix, we all do. Why I just can't go to concerts as audience.

What was missing is that feeling of live power, That thump in the chest everyone likes. That's where that power feeling comes from without actually using volume.

That is created when the kick drum and the bass gtr hit at the same time, the 125hz range on a graphic. No other rock instruments create that. It's the kick-bass combo.

I couldn't figure out why this guy was not hitting that with the gear being used. It baffled me. Then I found this video and BING!, that's it.

What he is doing is pulling the bass back with a compressor when the kick hits to let the kick drum come out. The exact opposite of what ya really want to do. Just turn the damn kick up, let lose that compressor holding it back. What he did is mix himself into a hole. He's actually fighting himself by just throwing more compressors at it instead of just not hammering what he has.

This is what happens when you have too many toys and enjoy playing with the toys more than the actual end result. Many newer guys have zero restraint, they just want to use all the onboard toys, not matter what. He dumped $30k into those plug-ins, he wants to use them. Well....I wonder what he's doing today. Why us older guys don't like digital, because they use stuff they do not need to use, just to use it.

What he did, whether he meant to or not was mix himself into a flat-line mix.

Absent mindedly tuned my alarm-clock-radio to whatever station got the strongest reception.  Mind you, it's been probably a decade since any radio I have has been tuned to anything but talk or strict classic rock.  Regardless, I didn't care, just wanted noise to wake up to other than the buzzer, which pisses me off.  Turns out I hit a modern "Pop" station (I guess that's what you'd call it).  Woke up to some weird bellybutton toejam that had me dreaming I was in hell listening to some freaky band of demons.  As I became fully awake another song came on, a woman singing (uhh, sort of rapping kinda) to some crap that sounded like the drummer (computer) was on the extreme high end of a tweaky-twitchy trip and wasn't capable of staying anywhere near the rhythm.

I finally got up, a little nauseated at what I was listening to.  Had to turn that toejam off asap.

I remembered "thunder" from the first one, did a search and landed on "Imagine Dragons".... watched the vid.  Ya, I'm sure I was in hell.  For-F's-squealing-Sake, what is wrong with people these days?  I couldn't find the other one. :uhoh  :old: :uhoh

Haha! Totally get it.

Heard of Imagine Dragon a lot, had zero clue anything about them or what they played.

Did a Nisson promo convention. Massive stage inside McCormick Place, there was an entertainment act. Got into setup and someone told me it was Imagine Dragon. I wasn’t mixing, they carried their own., Anyway, came band time and heard them play for the first time. <blank stare> Yep, spent that 75 minutes outside smoking cigs on the loading dock.

Like it or not, we became our parents. “TURN THAT CRAP DOWN!”.

My poor dad

Edit: Guess who was glad they weren’t mixing

After googling and watching the video, I came to the conclusion:

They are young, and you are not. That's all  :neener:

So painfully true.

So glad that AH is here as a stability post.

Naaaaw, nope.  I am way way too far off the deep end of musical tastes for this toejam to be about old vs young.

I'm not sure if the song or the video was more disturbing!
I had to watch a couple of Gwar videos to get that out of my head!

Eagler

haz, att least GWAR was (is?) up front with their roadkill.

Eagler, DavØdåýÐuŠ is a talented plank spanker.  She has that deep heartfelt emotional inflection that literally every single arteest for the past 20yrs has.... built upon, that makes me want to pillory a hedgehog.

FWIW, that 2nd song I woke to was simply so poorly put together I couldn't get my head around why someone would publish it... but it's a hit.  So, apparently I'm not only an old fart, I'm deaf'ish.

I shall commence with my personal modifications forthwith.  Standards are standards.  Could someone recommend some of that skinny Swifty chick's stuff?  Maybe some theatrical rap?  Techno-Country?...hard R's only!  Something for the ear-buds to help sooth my next colonoscopy.

Where's that cliff?..... :x

Hard for me to criticize what people think is great.

But, I’d like to smash Fabio’s gtr. He found some popular gtr sounds, but he’s playing glamor rock star more than the gtr. parts. He has no idea where he is in the song. Something tells me he couldn’t play a song correctly from beginning to end.

Her voice is more suitable for Norah Jones type girl music. Me bets her and him are a couple, her thinking his rock star wardrobe will take her places.

The girl with the violin is like, “I dunno, we were smokin weed and he asked me to come along.”

He’s thinking these girls looks over talent will take him places he should never be.

The real criminal, who should be pushed off the dock, is the one who claimed this better than the original.

Ever hear anyone copy a Synyard song anywhere near the original? Freebird has to be the most failed attempt by everyone. just the gtr parts are done with 3 gtrs. Dis guy isn’t even playing 1/4 of one gtr oart. In fact none if the notes are there, its just drivel. One guy in a bar band thinks he can pulled it off. As dry as Vanzant’s vocal is, its hard for even his brother Johnny to pull off, and he’s not doin it well either. I think he is playing a role more than nailing it. I worked with his brothers, Donny (38 Special) would have been better at it. Johnny was a glamor boy early 90s, suddenly over night he took on the biker badass persona, which Ronnie wasn’t the biker image.

The best comment by Piles, best described Ronnie stage presence “he doesn’t act like a clown on stage, he stalks it.” Ronnie was a true badass, even been shot (song 38 Special). He was a southern sht kicker.

Ya just can’t pull off a southern boy talking about momma unless you’re one. Even “country” artist fail. Yet Ronnies voice worked because he sounded like all of us, it had that authentic feel. The lyrics were written for the voice. One of the hardest bands to copy.

I saw them at Solider Field 77, then worked with them in the 90s without Ronnie. It wasn’t the same, and never will be.

Ya just can’t take this serious. That said, the AC power cable should have been yanked. I’ll nver be the same, and I can’t get that time back.

I’m ashamed for taking time to this. Goin outside to slice my wrist now.
