That was pretty hideous. I gave up after 3 bad downloads that ctd the file, and a 7 hour download time estimate?!

Went to work, and after at 3:00am it downloaded in just a few minutes, ran like a charm too.

While I am sensitive to your frustrations, I also am sensitive to what it would take to handle this download surge.

If HTC were to setup for this particular event, which occurs about 3 or 4 times a year, they would be bankrupt in a week.

Simple math;  1000 clients try to download the same file and would like to get about 10KBytes/sec would require (1000 * 10) 10,000KBytes.sec of bandwidth.  A single DS3 (45Mbits/s) can only move about 5000KBytes/sec of data.  This means HTC would need 2 dedicated DS3's to handle this scenario.
This does not include any bandwidth for game play, so throw in another DS3 for that.  Well, that would run anywhere from $45,000 (U.S.) to $60,000 per month.

I am not making any excuses here, but for some reason it appears people think bandwidth is free, I guess.  It would be fiscally foolish for HTC to shore up connections to handle an event which occurs so infrequently.

There may be other ways to handle it, but this is the first release since the major growth and, like in the past, they will learn fom it and as usual, will make the effort to improve it for the next release.

I can tell you we were and are not sitting on our hauches.  HTC and I were scrambling last night looking for every bit of bandwidth we could find to help improve this.

You think you are frustrated?  You have no idea how tense the situation is/was around here.

120K/sec this morning from the Downloads page.

It really doesn't make sense for HTC to buy the bandwidth necessary for updates, since they only happen a few times a year.

Well, we could wait two weeks for a cd to arrive by mail or pay twice our subscription rate or more as Skuzzy pointed out to make sure the quarterly download is a little less aggravating. Or we can have a minute amount of patience (we all know how rare that is these days though) and put up with a few aggravations (just like we have to with most things in day-to-day life). I choose common sense. And, after a few hours of trying it downloaded with no problem at all at 36KBs from the download site.

Sure didn't take long for the whinin to start.....new update comes out, thousands tryin to get it at the same time and some have so little common sense as to understand that traffic would slow the d/l's.

Welp, I ain't no internet guru I admit, but it seems to me they coulda offered a few more mirror sites to take the preasure off the HTC site.

And of course ya gotta know, right after I come here and vent, I tried again and got it, no problem and quickly:rolleyes:

Well craigr, putting up mirror sites is all well and good, but this puts HTC in a no-win situation.

If the mirror sites do not perform well, then people will complain about that.  And trust me,..it would take a couple 100 mirror sites to be able to offer the updates as fast as everyone wants it.  Of course, managing the sites is a problem in of itself as well.
It would delay the release a day or two, which might be acceptable by the community.  The WEB page would have to be updated with all the mirrors and made sure they all worked.  The autoupdater, which most players do use, would be pretty useless.  The list of issues is rather lengthy.

Now, if a player puts up a mirror, then people will complain to that player and not HTC.  Of course, some ISP's take great offense to any one client completely killing thier service and would shut off the client.
I estimate it would have taken 3 OC3's worth of bandwidth (thats about 405Mbits/s of bandwidth, or about 50MBytes/sec) to keep everyone happy.  There are not any ISP's in the world that have that kind of unused bandwidth available.  If they do, then they will be out of business shortly.  And this would only have been needed for a few hours of to handle the initial deluge.

Thanks fer the explanation Skuzzy, you put it in terms even I could understand.

Another question tho, what are the problems of putting it up on places like download.com, etc, or would that not significantly improve the siatuation ? Or is it just too much of a PIA for the rather short time the problem exists ?

just curious...

Downloaded 1.09 at midnight last night, Central time... 120k/sec.

Was done within 2 mins.

You guys have to realize that to get the best download speed, do the downloading from the website, and at off-peak hours.
