Staying on topic, I was never a gun owner, nor am I a fan of guns. Imagine that, a conservative that does not like guns!
Anyway, one night at 2am, my house alarm went off. Upstairs was myself, my wife, and my 2 year old daughter. (No one else lives in the house).
I spent 4 minutes trying to barrel load a .22 that my grandfather left me. In this time, we could have all been dead.
The next day, I went to the gunsmith, traded in the.22 and bought a pistol grip, pump action 20 gauge. (The guy said it's the thing to own for home defence)
So now, I can load this thing and have the trigger lock off in 30 seconds.
If this happens again, I will simply load the gun, have my wife call the police, and wait at the top of the stairs. If you come up the stairs, and your not a cop, I'm giving a warning. If you still continue, I'm going to fire.
I hope I never ever have to do this, but there is no way anyone is getting to my family without killing me first.
To this date, I've never actually even fired this gun, even on a range.
I hope this helps.
