Early Mustangs also proved successful in road racing. The GT 350 R, the race version of the Shelby GT 350, won five of the Sports Car Club of America's (SCCA) six divisions in 1965. Drivers were Jerry Titus, Bob Johnson and Mark Donohue, and Titus won the (SCCA) B-Production national championship. GT 350s won the B-Production title again in 1966 and 1967. They also won the 1966 manufacturers’ championship in the inaugural SCCA Trans-Am series, and repeated the win the following year.
In 1975 Ron Smaldone's Mustang became the first-ever American car to win the Showroom Stock national championship in SCCA road racing.

good point, as i did forget that.
but i'll add to that that with that bailout money, they chose to build this car in canada to save something like 2800 jobs there, when i'd have expected bailout money to help save jobs here....... :noid

Below is a porsche that logged over 70,000 race miles, two championships and first overall win of sebring 12 hours by a GTO class car.
I worked on it in the late 80s and was at junkyard next to daytona and could hear that porsches were racing when my phone rang with a question on the bodywork on this car.
I told them I would answer those questions in person within the hour if they got me admission.
Amazing event.

I like fords and still work on them.
I'll be doubling my "boost by gear" sensor system to include "nitrous by gear" this afternoon for this car below.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMuPknhk67I
Here's how it ran with a blown head gasket and someone running too much boost in all the gears.

nitrous, whilst i don't discount what it can do......it is for sissies that can't build power.
that being said, i had a "off the shelf" 150hp setup i was gonna put on my gt back in the 90's. was gonna take the cheap way out to get her into the low 11's......but i just couldn't make myself put that crap on a car with my name on it.
superchargers, turbochargers, fine.;.....nitrous.......thank you no.
EDIT
i don't mean anything personal by the above.....it is simply my opinion.

much as i hate to say it...almost as short lived as the mopar domination of nascar...the hemi was mopar's "ace in the hole".

the thing with mopars in drag racing.....watch them. even in the regular guy classes. they make massive top end power. you may hammer them out of the hole, but they'll come past ya like a freight train on greased rails up top.
-
We haven't yet used the nitrous in a race but the 600 shot is on the car in case we need it to break 280mph......maybe higher.
-
Gotta admit though, in that link I posted with the 68' vs the Bike, that was a pretty darn nice holeshot. Thing stuck to the road and flew as soon as he gave it some power :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CD4izK-sjS4&feature=related
-

if it's not being used, then it is extra weight, serving no other purpose than to slow you down.
-
if it's not being used, then it is extra weight, serving no other purpose than to slow you down.
It might not be needed but, after bottle removal, the nitrous setup only weighs 5 pounds.
If we were really worried about weight, we would have removed the A/C, interior, and entertainment sytems.
This car, after all, is a daily driver that also happens to go over 250mph.
Earlier in the thread, you mentioned ford and it's Trans-Am series wins but forgot that ford won it 9 times and chevrolet won it 15 times.
And of the 9 times, a under 2 liter alfa took the overall championship giving ford the over 2 liter championship so it's really 8 times ford won the Trans-Am championship to chevy's 15.
-
You mentioned ford and it's Trans-Am series wins but forgot that ford won it 9 times and chevrolet won it 15 times.
i didn't forget anything.
each time ford wanted it back, they took it. and btw......lincoln/mercury=ford.
13 championships through the years. even the crappy 70's and 80's
and i think it was 16 for chevy.
what i'd really like to see ford do now, is to take a stang to the nurburg ring........see how it does there. or did they do that, and i missed it?

so what did you give up to go 250? after all, by your reasoning, that mustang in the other thread had to give up somethign to run 9's....so by that reasoning, a 250mph car has to give up some manners too. :devil
-
Back in the day would stop light drag race American muscle cars and beat them with my little ole Yamaha 100cc Twin Jet. Well, that would be for the first 100'. :D
-
We gave up nothing to go 250....we use the same setup on road courses.
If we were to make it a 1/4 mile car, we would have to give up a lot.
Actually, we run shorter gearing than stock and still can return 20+mpg on the highway.

Ya know, the new Mustangs aren't half bad, and I kinda dig the new Challengers too (although they really need to go on a diet). If I was in buyer mode I'd probably jump for a new Camaro SS before either though, but that's just 'cause I'm a "Chevy guy" mmmm gotta love a 427 Chevy motor :rock
But on racing heritage and history, Ford does have the edge..... Drag racing and NAPCAR don't count, one doesn't turn at all, the other doesn't turn but one way, and any proper race driver will tell you if you don't turn left and right you're not really racing, you're just turning in circles. :D
I mean, who can argue with the Cobra -> Cobra Daytona Coupe -> GT40 Mk I/II -> GT40 Mk IV heritage?

That's all the history you need, IMHO. They coulda stopped at 1969. Enzo Ferrari got his backside handed to him by Ford in the late '60's, then Porsche took up where Ford left off, and old Enzo never took the Ferrari factory back to sports cars with a full works team after that, and they haven't since.
But don't discount Chevy's heritage..... Corvette was taking it to Europe before Ford....

stroll through the '80's where C4 Corvettes completely dominated racing in the Playboy Cup, Escort Endurance Series, SCCA World Challenge, etc. Corvettes were so dominant that after winning every single race for several seasons (85-87) over their competition from Nissan, Porsche and Lotus, they were banned from the series to form their own series, the Corvette Challenge series.

On a racetrack I'd say it's likely an F150 of any flavor is gonna get lapped repeatedly by a Cobalt SS, much less a Camaro or Corvette. :lol

You know, you're right there. I should say I'm a Corvette guy, not a Chevy guy......
Currently I'm actually trying to rid myself of a 2004 GMC Yukon Denali and a 2004 Chevy Suburban Z71.... both will find a new owner for thousands under NADA, hopefully sooner rather than later..... and quite frankly I don't see me owning anything GM other than a Corvette ever again.
The Denali has actually been bulletproof and tough as a Tiger tank, but the '99 Yukon it replaced thought it was made by Trabant, and actually made British cars look very very reliable. :uhoh
The Suburban has only had a few issues, but they've started coming on more commonly now with age and mileage. Warranty is out and I can't keep fixing things over and over.
GM powertrain = awesomeness, some of the best in the business.
GM Everything else (interiors, electrical, etc) = hit or miss at best. You may get one that stays together and nothing ever breaks, or you may get one like every other one I've owned that seems to find new and creative ways to fall apart before your very eyes.
-
another thought on Corvette being in a class by itself, I was really disappointed with how Ford handled the introduction and marketing of the Ford GT a few years ago, actually actively trying to keep teams from racing it, and ultimately killing it off with a very unceremoneous death after a very troubled life.
That coupled with the Viper being killed off by Dodge, and the Corvette is once again the only "real" American sports car.

in the past, i've liked gm's trucks. mostly mid/late 60's to early 70's pickups. i've liked the way they drove better then the ford trucks from that era.
if i was going to own anything gm(and i have) it's be pickups from that ear, a 60's camaro, or a new vette. not much else from gm "floats my boat", although i don't hate any of htem.
right now, i'm driving a dodge dakota. it's nice, although kinda useless as a pickup to be honest. it can't carry much weight, and it's not a crew cab, so i can only fit me +1 inside.
on the plus side, it looks and sounds cool, and is pretty quick for a truck...although not up to what i'd normally expect from a 318.
the fairmont i've mentioned before, may well find itself getting trailered to the road course down at milleville airport.
if i can make things work like i'd like them to......i'll be the proud owner of a 2011 gt premium sometime near the end of the year. was gonna go with lime green('cause that's what color my first car...a 67 coupe mustang was), but ford's discontinued that color again. the kona blue kicks arse though.
i've noticed in the gm suv's with the inline 6 cylinder...i think it's the 4.2L? they seem VERY sensitive to oil..as in keeping it changed, and don't DARE put the wrong weight in it. those engines also seem to eat up the VVT solenoids. i've replaced quite a few of them.

that video just shows how much dodge is dropping the ball. back before a lot of you were born(sheesh that makes me feel old), dodge could, and did easily spank both ford and gm. everywhere.
yet, here's the gt walking away from the camaro, which is walking away from the dodge...........so sad.
on that note, i had a guy in a 4th gen mustang messing with me on the way home from work yesterday. it would've been more fun if it was a gt, but it was only a 6 cylinder.
i let him stay fender to fender at the first light. we got to the next light, and the dork spun his hat around backwards. so what did i do? in all of my infinite wisdom?
i goosed the throttle, and when he looked over, i spun my hat 'round backwards, and smiled at him. when the light went green, i let him stay close, but not out front.
the third light was his wakeup call. i could see he loaded the converter......but i didn't hold back that time. i was sitting at the next light flipping the radio stations when he came up behind me. funny thing is that he could've pulled up next to me again.
i guess he got the hint. :devil
oh yea.........convertible vs convertible........is anyone gonna be shocked at the outcome? :devil

Bring ya ass! I have a buddy that runs a drag strip, or we can go down the vacant highway (it's straight as an arrow for over a mile! and it's rarely used)

perhaps we could hear what our two foremost experts on ford and chevy have to say. if voss (ford) and challenge (chevy) could clear thsi up for us, we would all be most appreciative. perhaps skyrock could give details regarding mopar's achievements.

The stang squealed the tire so I imagine TC was off.
The camaro will just melt the tires when it is off and not launched correctly.
There are actually 2 controls on.... one keeps the tires from breaking loose and the other keeps it from fishtailing.
-
WITH the exception of the video with all three of em smoking their tires, i think the traction control was/is on.
generally, the traction control will let em break lose momentarily, then stop it.
i just re-watched it. you can't tell which one or if or not both are squealing the tires, due to the angle.
face it....if you want a fast chevy, you gots ta buy a corvette. :devil :noid

Corvettes are on the downswing right now. Many former vette owners are moving to the camaro. GM even moved some of the better known vette techs over to the camaro line.
At the last Corvette and Chevy Expo at George R Brown convention center, one of our member camaros was the most powerful vehicle in the building.

GM has always done this with their people. Case in point: John Cafaro, lead designer for Corvette in the '90's. After the C5 hit the market in 1997, GM moved him to...............:drum roll:...............trucks.
GM moves their people from one product to another every few years. You may have been on the Cobalt/Sunfire 10 years ago, Corvette 5 years ago, and trucks today... and in 5 years from now you could be who knows where.
Corvette and Camaro are two different products for two different markets. Yes, some Corvette owners have bought Camaros. I'm sure there are many different factors at play in those purchase decisions that have absolutely nothing to do with Corvette's relative health in the market. GM doesn't care if they lose a few Corvette buyers to the Camaro SS. Does that mean Corvette is "on the down swing" and Chevy is gonna all of a sudden dump the Vette and make the Camaro their halo car? Nah. They still wind up with a Chevy in the garage. What GM wants is to win buyers away from Porsche and other European marques. That's why there's a Chevy Corvette factory race team at Le Mans each June, not a Camaro one.

stock power? or a modified Camaro? Do you think he'd be willing to line his 'Maro up next to a new ZR1 at the 1/4 mile for pink slips?
I know a guy with an 1,100 hp streetable Corvette. If he had shown up at a meeting such as that, would people not be singing the song of Corvette's demise? :lol

At the George R Brown there were very few stock anything. The most powerful vehicle there was one of our Hennesseys.
You can track the vettes by how many pure vette shows there are nationally now. The vette clubs will be the first to tell you. Not to mention GMs own folks saying the same.
Camaros just came back in 2010...... wait a bit and see what happens. The ball is rolling and the ZL1 is coming. Should only be a matter of time for road course action then.
My information is based on facts your not going to see in public. Just wait and see. :)
BTW the camaro I am talking about is 1040 RWHP streetable. We also have a 1015 RWHP streetable. HP is not the only thing these cars possess.

As far as shows go, coming from a motorsports background and not a "show" background I give little concern about the number of "pure vette shows" there are. Heck, the Corvette Clubs I was a member of had dozens to hundreds of members, and not a "show car" in the crowd... we were all racers that were involved in track and autocross events. To my knowledge, NCCC (National Council of Corvette Clubs) is among the largest organizations of Corvette Clubs nationwide... and hosts almost no shows what-so-ever, being almost entirely motorsports competition oriented.
Sure, GM is throwing a lot of resources towards the Camaro, it's new and trying to establish itself against some good competition. And GM is already putting factory effort into the road racing program, in Grand Am. They're doing the same in World Challenge with the Caddy CTS-V again. And it's still the Vette in the ILMC (formerly ALMS) for the international crowd.
Look, I like the Camaro, and will probably end up with an SS in the garage in a few years, because that's what the wife is salivating for (she wants the rear seats to haul the young'ins). But facts are facts, and reality is what it is...... Corvette will always be the king of performance at GM. The only place the Camaro will be Corvette's daddy is on the shop floor of some aftermarket tuner. If they undo that fact at Chevy... they're more of a group of damm fools than even I could believe.

OK, answer me this: If you were gonna retake the record at the Nurburgring for the Bowtie Brand... would you rather do it in a Vette or a Camaro?

Well the Hennessey I mentioned won best of show and our club took 28 of the 31 awards.
Many of our club members have lots of horsepower and lots of handling goodies. They run quarter mile and tracks.

you've missed the fact(i think) that there is a huge difference between racers, and showers.
i rarely hit car shows, only due to the fact that so many of the show cars are "trailer queens", regardless of what their owners will tell you......and i can't stand trailer queens.
cars are built to be driven.
you alos didn't catch the play on words. "streetable horsepower". biiiiiiig difference between 1050 streetable horsepower, and a car with 1050 horsepower that's driven every day. :devil
i've been around this stuff long enough to know what is and isn't.
for gm.....their american made hot rod will remain king of the hill, unless they do something stupid(again).
for the camaro/mustang wars? they will continue as long as ford and chevy can sell cars off of them. i gotta admit though.....i like how chevy has to go to a supercharged 6.2 liter to mess with a naturally aspirated 5.0 liter. (i'm a jack arse, ain't i? ) :devil :bolt: :noid
almosdt forgot....as for the nurburg ring? if they're not gonna use the vette, then they'll use the cadillac. it's faster than the camaro too. :noid

From the factory. You cannot go to a chevy dealer and get a hennessey. There is a huge difference between a supercharged mustang from the showroom and one that I would send to Livernois Speed Shop and have the engine hopped up.
The traction control whine was a 3 out of 10.

We're currently taking in cars worked on by Hennessey, Heffner, ligenfelter, and underground racing and actually making them produce the horsepower they were promised to deliver by the previous shops.

Nice... what is the name of your shop. Are you internationally known like Hennessey? They seem to get magazine covers when there are any HP shootouts.

You and I are in perfect agreement when it comes to sports cars. I have no use for car shows.... If I check out the car show, I wanna see some rare vintage stuff, not a contest for who can put the most chrome or carbon fiber add-ons on their otherwise dime-a-dozen street car.

Funny... at most shows my daughter's 6 banger is in..... her car attracts about as much attention and even the monster V-8s.
There is no getting around the thumpers when they are coming in. The sounds of superchargers, turbos, and that good ol' lift n duration.

One-upmanship?
Setting up the data acquisition system entails.
Removal of the dashboard and console.
Removal of body panels to fit linear ride height sensors to the suspension.
Fabrication of mounts of said sensors and car show quality mounting of data acquisition unit.
Running wires that integrate it into the ford gauge driver unit.
Running wires for the sensors, gps antenna, and smarty camera. (all wires soldered and shrinkwrapped.)
Setting up software for signal types of sensors used and range.
Removing the springs from the coilovers and jacking the car to "learn the unit" the full suspension travel.
Putting the car on alignment pads and using heavy weights to "learn the unit" the "as installed" spring rates.
After it's back together, then the car has to be run up at various speeds up to 200mph and data reduced so we can determine what the lift and/or downforce will be at 270mph or more.
Align car based on findings to avoid a dangerous instability at high speeds by duplicating ride heights found at speed on the alignment rack using weight/jacking and adjusting alignment , stance, and ride height to produce stable ride at speed.
And that's what "setting up the data acquisition system means.
-
ok....so here's my question.
why buy a car, and then modify it so it has over 1,000 "streetable" horsepower, when you can go to your local dealer, and buy one of these?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxBla4-lIuI
it's not 1,000 horsepower, but it is a car that could easily be a daily driver, with no need of anything special('cept for lots of money to obtain it)......but then it costs as much to make a "streetable" car as mentioned above.
the difference here, is that "streetable" simply means you can drive it on the street. but can you use it as a daily driver? doubtful. i've seen people make such claims before, and every one of them eventually admits that they're not daily drivers.
the best part is that the super snake is supposed to be over 800hp for 2012. compared to what? 625 from the 6.2 in the camaro? :devil
the only drawback is that there will be no warranty on the 800hp+ version.
there is however, the gt350. i think there's an option on that one that's only got 624hp. more in line with the little guys. :aok

not so much 1-upmanship, as what i get to do for a living.
while sometimes, i'd rather be working on nothing but high performance cars, when it comes right down to it, i can fix virtually anything that's street legal, and can fit into my bays......and i love that feeling.
this is from nearly 30 years of doing exactly that....fixing whatever the day brings me. even the high performance stuff. i don't think i'd trade what i do now, for anything to be honest.
and although it's not what you work on....that 800hp camaro i've posted pictures of? wanna guess who built everything 'cept the engine and tranny on that car? :devil

I agree. The mustang looked good when the "new" 60's body style came out. Reminded me a bit of my '67. Since then they have destroyed the back end.

Details, details, and relativety, younger to us mortals, etc., etc...
Not a whole lot that needs to be done to a Honda to keep it happy and healthy. Water pump being one, the radiator another, and oil changes at least once a year by even the most neglectful. About everything else you can patch up enough to make it to a shop or home with the shirt off your back, your belt, and a proper amount of piss or water. Their water pumps are relatively cheap too I think... still... maybe... :furious . Still relatively cheap to maintain a Honda, but it's not getting any cheaper out there to maintain any car these days.

gotta watch with the newer ones with variable valve timing though.........i've had a couple with clogged screens on the VVT solenoid. on the hondas, i can simply remove it, clean it, and put it back, and all is good.
on the gm's(try to not act too shocked), it's harder than that......you can't just clean them. you have to replace that solenoid. i think the last one i did, was nearly $400.

That model honda is notorious for pushing out front engine seals.
I've seen a few come in for used car inspection just pouring oil and I find the seals are not so much leaking but rather left the bore where they sit.
-

if they've left the bore, there has to be a reason. generally a pcv problem.
the ford 5.0 liter engines used to be notorious for pushing the oil pan gasket out...but it wasn't a ford problem for the most part, but rather a maintenance problem....as in lack of knowledge on the mechanics part.
-
I honestly figured that front seal problem in civics during that time was because half of them were being used by young men or teenagers and half of them were buying and installing their own supercharger and exhaust kits, I figured they knew as much about powerplants as they did their audio systems (which as a youth I did for a neighbor's buisness for some spare $$) so it was most likely consumer-generated issues (lack of maintenance, installing their supercharger backwards, etc.) and not a manufacturer's defect. When I bought my current Honda ('97 civic 4-door) I made sure the previous owner didn't f!@# around with it or mod it too outrageously.
Only major problem my '97 Honda has had that was a bit odd in my book was the head gasket seals started leaking water, but due to corosion starting to set in within the head gasket itself and not the seals. The corosion was just starting and my mechanic talked me into letting someone he knew resurface the headgasket for cheaper than a new or used one, and because he had a good feeling it would do the trick because the corosion was so minimal, and it did, hasn't been a problem with it for over 4 years.
Current bi!@ on the "to be fixed when I have the $$$" list is my passenger rack and pin (also my engine mounts need a replacing, but talk about a "luxury" expence/priority in my book ;) ), it's just a tad loose, and maaaaan have they gotten a tad more expencive than I last remember, but in the end it's all probabley my fault originaly from somewhere along the line and 100k miles I've put on it... :P
The only developing annoyance I'm having currently is the drivers-side wheel well. I think I may of found the only blatantly retarded thing to come off the Honda drafting boards. (now if I can describe it properly...) Where the front corner panel meets the hood ontop and joins the body is about dead-center the tire as it sits in place. Reach up into said wheele well and feel the top of the well, there's an... "outdented" crease that normaly has a heavy plastic/rubber linning over it to act as a layer of protection (from the tire I'm assuming, but could be a GP one for corrosion, etc.). Without this layer of rubber protection, this outdented crease of where two sheet of metal combine is positioned and angled perfectly to keep chewing the same 1/16"-1/8" radial bit my tire tread every time my little honda civic hits a dip or bump. So now I can't figure out if my problem is A) that protective layer is gone, exposing the metal to the tire's tread when you hit a dip or bump, so I need to replace or recoat it, B) shocks or something in the suspension is too old and needs to be replaced, or C) I won't lie, my tires are the cheapest I could find and made in some corner of Korea most of us have likely never heard of, so maybe I need better tires. (Then there's D) my driving, but anywho...)

B.
CHEck your front struts and/or springs.

Nah, thought I'd take a page outa Tupac's thread about pimping out his plane, couldn't get outdone by an Alaskan with only three wheels on his ride. (yeah, they've always been stock and by the door sticker, been afraid its been something in the suspension that was the real $$$problem$$$, *sigh* back to the list.)
