Valid point. Maybe he's had too many darn pies

OK let me re-phrase that? How much fun can it be zipping around the Galaxy mining and trading? That was a question I kept asking myself during my free week of Eve.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I don't want to spend all of my time fighting off 12 year olds as most "combat" games seem to have become. That being said, I wish this game had capital ships available at some point. That's one of my favorite parts about X3...

Yes, but you don't hear from them much. They'll fight you, have a good fight, call it a day, everyone wins. It's the 12 years that get on and scream about "raping you" and then stalk you for 2 hours just to piss you off...

Sounds a lot like Aces High...except many of those "12-year-olds" are actually 30+ years old.

LOL AH isn't bad at all. I played Call of Duty online once (The new ones, not the classics. THOSE were great, even online). Never again...

ummmm... you should never admit being bullied by a 12yo man.... jus saying... 8)

BF is pretty bad now. I couldnt even get thru one round the other day.
The only ones left are the BF die hards so whats that tell you?

I've lost about all interest to MMO games due to rampant cheating problem. I don't want to pay premium prices (battlefield for example) for a game only to find out there are players with illegal assists on many servers. Not a day goes by nowadays without seeing someone with a clear aimbot tuned to instant headshot mode (which people do only to troll others, the sneaky ones use less obvious assists that just make you 10x more lethal than regular aiming players).

Same. AH is the ONLY online game I play, and likely to be the only one I am ever still involved in for this reason. The days of people placing value in learning skill have been superceded by wanting to have the highest score via aimbot, and just wanting to troll people.

We are very fortunate in this regard here, HTC doesn't get enough praise in this dept to be honest - the plagues you see in CS GO or BF or many other online games just doesn't exist here. This is one of few games, ones I can count on one hand, that I'm confident while playing that nobody else has any extra "help" going on.

Unfortunately, a huge part of the current AH population (maybe even the majority?) does believe otherwise.
For example that other night in CraterMa there was a 'discussion' on range vox where I found literally all players currently in tanks to be totally convinced that DR7 and some other players had totally hacked the tank game. I'm not kidding - ALL of them were agreeing with that.
Years ago I took a lot of time to explain stuff to people, what really happened and why, show them test data and explain game mechanics to counter rumours and myths. You know, all that stuff like collisions, energy retention, use of the film viewer to correct subjective perception, tested climb rates and so on...
I have largely given up on that, as I feel it's futile. Now I find myself just squelching the country channel more and more...

only cause of the numbers that play.. if millions played ah like those mentioned games we would see more of it I believe.. games like the bf series with their player stats made it pretty easy to pick out the wannabe scrubs that were using.. still, most of the accused played clean..

Man, I knew I had finally "arrived" as a competitive pilot the first time I got a PM accusing me of hacking lol.
I agree, while I have seen 'glitches' from time to time, or bugs being exploited, it's minor enough, that it's never bothered me.

Privateer was pretty fun (imo). I even enjoyed playing 'Trade wars' in my old BBS days. ;)

My faith in humanity diminishes day by day (even minute by minute, at times).

Apparently, I'm not alone. :D

I never found a board that really ran a good TW game. There was always one guy running around that had the best ship and would grief the other players just to be a dick, and because he had the best ship and couldn't be taken to task for it.
Did have a lot of fun with Solar Realms Elite, though. Couple times I was the top empire, but usually left the others alone and kept good relations with them (trade and defense pacts, etc.). At least until some twit decided to drop a chemical weapon on a bunch of my planets. He didn't survive long after that. :devil
-
I've used that same argument myself before too Kappa, that part of the reason is also the target demographic and the numbers of players. I'm sure if those responsible for CS GO stuff turned their attention here, it IS possible they could create havoc. Luckily they aren't too interested in this sort of game.
Elite is going to be a lot of fun I think.
I still like the Starship combat in Star Citizen/Arena commander a bit better, now that trackIR works and they control system has been somewhat fixed there. I've been doing a lot of random online fights there, and once you figure out how to decouple fight, spin on your axis while traveling in a direction you aren't facing, using thrusters to pop up down, left/right, and so on, it's like adding a bunch of new dimensions to our regular type of flight model in an atmosphere here. Complex, but a lot of fun. Then adding in turreted/gimbaled weapons that can be tracked with your head/trackir - a very, very complex and cool fighting environment.

It looks like really good graphics but its not really a combat game is it?
There is plenty of combat in Elite Dangerous if that's what you want. Up to now I have mainly done trading and some exploring, but also keen to try mining. As I am not looking for combat, I mostly play either Solo online or in one of the groups I am a member of. One of the groups is PVE only. Even so, there is still the possibility of being interdicted by an NPC, which you can submit to or try to escape from. Personally I always try to escape if I can but if you want combat it's there. :) There are also various combat zones around.
E: D is by no means complete yet, we have only seen small parts of it during the Alpha and Beta testing phases. Pre-release starts at the weekend and it will be released on 16 December. I am going to the Premiere on Saturday evening where we have been told we have a surprise in store. The event is also being streamed on Twitch. I am really looking forward to this as it looks like there is going to be much more in the game than we have seen so far.
E: D will continue evolving well after release with things like planetary landings and walking around ships/stations etc. I can't wait to see what else it has in the future. :D

It's the official Elite: Dangerous channel as far as I know - http://www.twitch.tv/elitedangerous (http://www.twitch.tv/elitedangerous) - I will let you know if it's any different. Doors open at 18:00 UK (13:00 Eastern) and the event starts 18:30. Doors close at midnight (19:00 Eastern). I don't know if the stream will be continuous or only at certain times but it will definitely be worth watching I think. :D

What's the claim? 400 billion star systems modeled? Really? No ..... really? Even if they could, how many lifetimes am I expected to use exploring 1%? :(

I think the idea is there'll always be someplace nobody's seen. It's not a terrible idea, but I fear it will wind up being "Oh great, another ice planet. Wee." but would love to be proven wrong.

Take your time, my game crashes on start. I can do the tutorials no problem, but when I hit start I see Nelson pointing his finger at me...

Nope. Not antivirus either. New build today, will see how it works out.

I don't think you can really call it a competitor. The genres aren't even remotely close.
-
It works! A couple of crashing problems but not too bad. Managed to make my first contract to deliver supplies to a system I couldn't reach so I restarted, got a better mission and made a bunch of credits off of it and data I got from my scanner thingy.
Can't wait to start hunting bounties! :airplane:
I'm Mar1 in the game btw. Why do people keep stealing my name? :furious
-
I also have Elite... loving it on my Oculus DK2.. we need to all get together and do some wolf-pack bounty hunting!

Preordered it.
It amazed me that it took this long to remake. Maybe modern games like Eve Online etc. gave a needed kick.

I actually stopped training and flew to another docking station yesterday :)
Its is taking me ages to map my keyboard and HOTAS lol
Where is my spare ship?

I will at the next meeting and i promise to disgrace myself :)

Great! Did you manage to dock OK?
What HOTAS do you have? I use the TM Warthog and Saitek Pro Pedals so could let you have details of my setup.
Where is my spare ship?
No idea. Not found mine yet.... but not really looked as I'm currently playing a Federal Trader. :)

Hey, I resemble that remark!! :P
Did anyone get drunk?.

Oddly enough, despite the fact it was a free bar, there was very little evidence of anyone getting very drunk. I know I was a bit tiddly by the end of the night but never reached the 'feeling sick' stage and I didn't have a hangover either - but slept solidly as soon as my head hit the pillow when I went to bed around 1:30 ish... I did hear of one person who was very drunk but I didn't see him.
We were all very well behaved I thought, so if you disgrace yourself you will be in a very small minority. :D

You can find all other ships you own by first going to any port with a shipyard and hitting the tab on the right, there you will see your ships and their locations.
I have not figured out how to have my ships moved to another system for me tho, so I had to abandon my sidewinder. I want to do some fighting so I can trick out my ship or get a better one for bounty hunting, and the news says there's fighting in and around Eranin so that's where I'm headed. My Eagle is set up for hunting with 2 tons cargo space in case I run into a dry spot.
I find it annoying that cargo you find in the middle of nowhere with nobody around is considered stolen if you pick it up. :furious
Ended up unfriendly with the Federation that way, hope I can make it up to them.
-
Looks really cool, and I've been a fan since the Amiga days. Not sure if my machine will handle it, or if the final release will have lower minimum requirements.
Since it looks like I can't try the Beta without dropping a bundle of money, do you computer nerds think my system will run it fairly well? I'm open to upgrading my machine sometime sooner or later (it's been solid for about 4 years now).

I don't know much about processors but I do know it lists a quad core as minimum and I have a feeling that it's not going to change. But I don't really know what I'm talking about there.
As for RAM you've got plenty for it now, but as they add stuff it'll probably go up so, if you ask me it's a bit of a gamble getting the game without upgrading. But again I don't know as much as I'd like too about this stuff, so I don't really know why I'm making this post...
Guess I wanted to pretend I know what I'm talking about for a moment. :) Someone more knowledgeable will come along shortly.

You don't need anything special to run Elite dangerous. Just look at this guy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUFIFL7zwXQ#t=231

I am still torn between Elite and Star Citizen. Will not have the time to play both alongside AH. I'll have to wait till launch and decide then.

It's funny how old games lose their shine after you retry them 20 years later. I remember the excitement I had with certain titles back then and now that I retry them on Mame or similar I'm wondering what exactly was I excited about. But I'd pay 200 bucks a pop for any game that would give me the same kind of rush like those first C64 games and programs did. Man that was an exciting time.

So... is the general consensus that this is worth the $75 to get in on the beta?
-
From what I hear, it's now in Gamma. I don't know if you can still get in before the main release.
-
Not anymore. You'll have to pre-order or wait until the 16th next month for the release.
Probably best to wait though, right now the game feels like it's only 2/3 finished. Lots of things either missing or set up in a very frustrating way. Take bounty hunting for example: find a ship and scan for a bounty, see that it has a bounty, use a certain module to pull him out of super-cruise, then you must scan him again to re-discover the bounty before you attack, otherwise YOU get a bounty for assault. The same thing happens if a pirate pulls you out of super-cruise: you can see him shooting at you and you fire back in defense, but if he didn't HIT you first, you get a bounty.
On top of that, sometimes after you've killed a few confirmed bounties other random ships will show as hostile on the radar and they may or may not attack you for no reason, including the "police". And of course you get a bounty if you shoot them.
Just so many confusing things and the devs are still just trying to figure out why a lot of people have their games constantly crashing. Not really sure what to expect at release.

This is a reply to flossy about my set up

I got out my ST290 joystick other day, for some unknown reason its very good considering its cheap as chips

Ahh OK. There may be some setups posted on the forums, or there should be a default setup in the Controls section of the menus in-game. Making any changes to the default setup creates a new 'Custom' setup. It's worth documenting all your settings in case a wipe takes them out, as happened with the last wipe - though hopefully there will only be one more when Gamma ends and the game launches on 16 December.
As I was a Kickstarter backer, I have various starting options, all in the Cobra Mk III. At the moment I have taken a Federal Trader option but once we have 3 commanders I will also take an Explorer option and the third is undecided at the moment.
Have you seen the App which has been released - IOS only at the moment but Android version coming 'Soon' (ED equivalent of 'two weeks'). It only works if you have created a commander in game but seems very good from what I have seen of it so far.
I have the Track IR too, it makes a big difference for things like lining up on a space station's 'letterbox' or of course for fighting but I don't do a lot of that. :D

Given Elite is being published next month and Star Citizen would need a miracle to be published in December of 2015 the choice is not as hard as all that.

No, but there is someone on the forum called imadot!

I was an early supporter, because I liked the idea, but have played very little owing to time. I don't think I've logged in since it first was available.
Anyways, I have not followed up much, but is this going to be like EVE where if you don't get started at the beginning you are going to be majorly behind the curve owing to skills?
-
Are you a Knight?
I don't understand your question. If it is in reference to AH, I mostly flew Rook, with Knight's being the other side I usually flew on. Don't recall which I last flew as.

No, it is such a big universe and there isn't corporation/empire building that the EVE stuff should never be an issue.

I've never played Eve so I'm not able to make any comparisons, but I don't think starting later will make the slightest difference; flying and fighting shouldn't be a problem and once you have mastered the basics like docking, the galaxy is your oyster. :) Whether you choose to be a trader, explorer, bounty hunter, pirate etc is up to you - or you can play a combination of any/all of them at any time. I am sure there will be new players starting all the time after release so no need to worry about being left behind.

So, I am now getting missions where I need to find and destroy a specific individual. How do I do that in the vastness of this univese? How do I actually find them, and thier name so I can collect? 45 minutes seems awful short to do this..

Ignore those missions. Seems that 1 in 50 players can actually find the target, just to be blown away in five seconds.
Like I said, a lot of things are broken/missing at the moment. If these missions were working, you should be able to find the target in one of the last known locations in the mission description, or find some kind of trail/assistance leading to them
There are a lot of people worried about what the game's state at release will be including me. There are still many people who can't even get the game to launch let alone experience all the broken game mechanics for themselves. Possibly the developers are just saving all the good fixes for release, but based on the fact that the developers decided to call this build Gamma I'm not very hopeful.

It's the bane of gaming industry today, release dates are rushed so much that a half done product is released and everyone who preordered or are enthusiast are dealt a rotten deal.

"It's the bane of gaming industry today, release dates are rushed so much that a half done product is released and everyone who preordered or are enthusiast are dealt a rotten deal."
That is one take on the subject but one possibility is that the game mechanics is not thought out through at this stage since the technical issues pose enough challenge. I'd say all the money pouring in will guarantee a few years of updates to improve game play.
I have seen a few games where all the hard missions are neutered so every one can feel the success to a point that there is actually no challenge anymore. And that is what ruins the game play for me. I'd say that if there is a bounty hunter mission and I can't find the subject while I read that some people have what would I feel? Disappointed? Hell yeah, but if that bounty would come by someday and I'd manage to kill him I'd feel rewarded a bit more intensely if the bounty was but to collect if you had enough "equipment" to take him down.
Imagine if the game developers have two options:
Option one, the game has challenges and requires you to spend lot of time playing and the successes give you kicks for a long time. Risk is that the game grows a dedicated demanding player base and the income is steady but rather low.
Option two, the game is "easy and arcadish". You can plug in for an hour and do a few missions, gain money and buy boosts to your ship and boast your friends your achievements only to hear that they all have done the same yesterday. Risk is that the player base have a lot of rotation, and although there is a good amount of money coming in the player base in obsessed with new gimmicks to achieve and there is no dedicated player base.
Number two is dominating nowadays but as an old school player I really fancy option Nr 1. It will be interesting to see which way Frontier decides to go.

That is one take on the subject but one possibility is that the game mechanics is not thought out through at this stage since the technical issues pose enough challenge. This is exactly the problem here. I'd say all the money pouring in will guarantee a few years of updates to improve game play. Less people will want to buy a broken game.
I have seen a few games where all the hard missions are neutered so every one can feel the success to a point that there is actually no challenge anymore. And that is what ruins the game play for me. Hell yeah, but if that bounty would come by someday and I'd manage to kill him I'd feel rewarded a bit more intensely if the bounty was but to collect if you had enough "equipment" to take him down. The missions in question have you up against the highest ranked NPCs with the most powerful ship available equipped with the best gear, and is nearly impossible to find despite even being told where to look. Good luck. The reward money isn't even worth it once you get the equipment needed to take him down without exploiting the AI.
I'll stop there. I don't want to completely trash the game until after it's released at least.

Is there an experience bonus built into the game, or is it just based on your skill?
-
Its like the old Elite but more colour and its multiplayer :)
Its like AH people moan about about this and that instead of having a laugh playing the game :old:
-
Every new update brings more features into the game and there is so much more to come! I have heard on a few occasions that Frontier had a fully functioning game as long as 2 years ago, but they have only been releasing small parts of it for testing purposes. Most problems have only cropped up since it has been opened up to more and more players with each level of testing, and patches are quickly deployed to fix the majority of them. I have been playing since Alpha and have seen some huge improvements over the past year - it just keeps getting better! :D
I only ever do courier/delivery-type missions as I have very little interest in combat - interdictions are bad enough! :) All missions start with a fairly long time to complete, but this time reduces as time goes on if nobody else has picked it up. Always check the time remaining before accepting - people have been caught out when missions have been close to expiring, and if a fine is involved it has been implemented straight away - which turns into a bounty if not paid fairly promptly, I think within 24 hours.
I feel certain that E: D will be a great success and continue to see major improvements as expansions for many years - planetary landings etc..... :aok

There are no skills to level up. It's just you, your ship, and a royal pain in the *** trying to find the parts you need to upgrade it.

Which is why I will like this game - just like Aces High. It's about player skill, not about who can find/buy the most power-ups to make up for lack of actual skills. :aok

Do you deliver pizza's Flossy?.

If the price was right, of course I would! Not come across any yet though... :D
There is ranking but three different ways of increasing rank. Everyone starts out as Harmless in Combat, Penniless as a Trader and Aimless as an Explorer. After a long exploring session on Saturday, I am now Mostly Aimless in the Exploration category. :)
As a kickstarter backer, I have various starting options, and can start in a Cobra kitted out for whichever option is chosen. I am hoping we have 3 commanders so that I can play 3 different types of play; one as an explorer, one as a trader and one for something like mining.
Launch date in "two weeks!" :x
-
So last night the last day of preorder I finally decided to grab this game, and of course my card gets lock for trying to use it on an overseas site. Got it straightened out today but missed on the preorder special. Been playing my copy of space trucker 2014 for a few hours stopped taking the 'find a pirate' missions and now im just hauling stuff around in 3 hours only got into 1 fight and was giving a better ship then mine all she wanted but was going south for me when out of nowhere some federal ships show up! Lol guess I got the last hit in and a nice little 9k bounty collected. Took a mission to deliver some tea for 12k then since I had bought some extra another 600 credits for them. Yeah I'd say this game is pretty fun except not being able to find things to blow up.
P.s. Ingame name is Killomend if ya want to friend up
-
Argh, sorry to hear you missed out on the Preorder special but glad you managed to get into the game in the end. If you want fights, look for the Conflict zones - I believe there are some around Eranin at the moment. Also keep an eye on the Galnet news in the Starport services panel as that often gives hints of where to find action. The missions are a good way of earning credits so that you can beef up your ship and eventually buy a better one. If you upgrade your frameshift drive to get a better jump distance, there are some nice rare goods in the Commodities market which increase in price the further away you can get to sell them (at least 120 LY). There is a list of systems/stations where rare goods have been found so far at https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=63119 (https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=63119), with others being added all the time. Rare goods are highlighted in yellow in the Commodities market.
Hope you continue to enjoy playing. More will be coming in further patches during the coming weeks I think; they kept the release version very close to the latest Gamma to minimise problems on launch day, but there is more to come. I will add you when I get online shortly. :)

lol FSD interdictors and nav points is where it is at, unfortunately federal ships like to pop in when you pull someone from FSD and clear your 12, you hit them one time next thing you know your wanted and now fighting 3 fed ships while the guy with the 12k bounty jumps away :cry. Anyone using a teamspeak or vent we all can hop on when were playin?
-
I tell ya now if you run into an Asp with a 35k bounty that's labeld "harmless" that's a lie its gonna be a dog fight
-
Their ranks are usually say of on. Harmless NPCs sometimes can't even tell that they're being shot at for a few seconds and have bad aim, while Elites love to fly backwards so you can't escape their fire. And they have turrets. Lots of extremely annoying turrets.

yeah tangled with a really tough asp ended up getting my canopy shot out like half a minute before I got him, lol had to make 2 different sprints to different places to get repairs. Didn't have money at the first place I went so had to sprint to another station that was the right faction AND I was in a system I was wanted in lol 1 interdiction and I was done.
-
This is a screenie of when I had to run and get my canopy repaired I got to this staion only to not have the money to even repair my canopy, and the bounty I had just killed couldn't be turned in here so I had to refill my oxygen(5 mins worth) and make another sprint lol. Needless to sau I have upgraded my life support systems.

I flew all this way, to find this tiny brown dwarf without the help of advanced scanners. The orbit path would sometimes show up but usually I had to fly at an angle and look for it to move against the background stars(took about minutes because I lost it once and had to reestablish the orbit line.

as a sidenote I am looking forward to 'wings' being implemented so I can wing up with friends universe is pretty lonely out where I am. Bought an adder for exploration dint have money for an asp, however I can't see as well as I would like to out of cabin as I it's not as easy to find things without an advanced scanner.

The sweetfx screen just looks a bit darker to me. What more does it do? My main problem using the 3D option is getting sharp detail in the distance and some annoying flickering in highlights and reflections.

You can do things like de-saturate or over-saturate the colors, remove some of the colors, change the gamma, separately adjust tint for shadows/mid-tones/highlights, all sorts of things. In my settings, I've de-saturated a little, removed some of the red to make it look less "glowing orange everywhere", biased the colors more towards blue in the shadow and mid-tones, and also removed some of the haze effect to make it look more like "outer space".
-
Easiest 'sweet fx' that requires no extra software is to adjust your gamma setting in the display menu :D

Is it really worth the money?
-
Is it really worth the money?
I think so, just don't expect to run in to ALOT of people once you get out of the starter areas. Not that people don't play but space is big and their is no good way to talk to friends long distance so a lot of the people that are trading or exploring are doing so in solo play. That being said I don't focus on one thing I use a multipurpose ship so if I want to fight I can, or if I want to trade I can or if I just want to get lost out THERE exploring and finding cool things I can. $59 bucks for the time I have spent on the game so far? Yeah its worth it(to ME)

You guys suck. I'm in.

I'm 'Medevac' in there.

Search the tutorials on Youtube. They are essential to understanding the concept and game play. Another thing, take some time and get your controls set up so you can access your right and left user interface screens. Last thing, realize that this is no instant gratification phone game. You have to put time in to understand it and enjoy. Once you do that, you will find it is quite enjoyable.
-
Im gridding to a 1.5 mil scaner then Ill go explore till i reach elite explorer. Is there already a mission for that?

I am Zack1234 in game :)
your all freaks :rofl

There is a way of changing the colours which a lot of people have been doing - http://arkku.com/elite/hud_editor/ I've even seen screenshots/youtube videos featured in the weekly newsletter from Frontier so presumably it's acceptable to them.... :) It can apparently have a weird affect on the Galaxy Map colours, but could be worth experimenting. I've left mine as so far I like the orange and it doesn't feel right to change it.
-
Anyone taking part in the galactic exploration mission?
I'm a member of The First Great Expedition and hope to be exploring with them. As a kickstarter backer, my starting ship is the Cobra III and I had an option to start out as an Explorer, with the Cobra already kitted out for long distance exploration. I have since made some upgrades to improve it even more. Unfortunately, I am probably going to miss some of the first exploration runs which coincide with the frames of the upcoming scenario.....

I beg to differ, HOTAS + Rift = instant gratification :devil

You don't really get the virtual immersion that way though.
-
That's true, and it is VERY immersive with the DK2, but playability suffers greatly due to the lower resolution. Just looking around the cockpit was awesome and the immersion was so perfect that when I looked down at my left arm it actually felt like my arm was there. It was a bit eerie! I also missed when trying to grab the throttle since I was trying to grab the in-game visualization of the throttle! LOL

And their forums (https://forums.frontier.co.uk/forum.php) are just as adversarial and divided as ours; especially between the "Open Play" and "Solo Play" crowds.
-
so who has a teamspeak or Ventrilo we all can hop on? pretty boring not having the ability to talk to people, everytime I see someone they are going the other way and by time I type a message they are pretty much gone.

There's a private PvE group called "Mobius". They are dedicated to playing the environment and not griefing each other. You get the benefit of interacting with other players without having to deal with the people who get off on killing you just because they can. They have a TS server. Check out their forum thread (https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=38362&highlight=mobius) for more info.

Ok going to take the plunge this weekend........any tips to help get started and can pedals be used for yaw?
-
Yes, your whole HOTAS setup can be used. It will take some time getting the controls set the way you like. I would also highly recommend trying Voice Attack (http://www.voiceattack.com/) to give commands to the game. I didn't want to try to remember what buttons I set to do stuff (plus I'd eventually forget my AH mappings).
Start out in Solo mode until you get used to controls and game mechanics. The tutorials don't teach you anything, but they at least let you practice flying and fighting. Your free starter ship the "Sidewinder" is free, so if you get blown up you get another basic one for free. Once you start adding/upgrading systems or buy a new ship, you MUST have enough credits to cover the buy-back cost, otherwise you'll end up back in the basic Sidewinder.
Take your time, check things out, don't be in a rush to make the most money and buy the biggest ship. Lots of people complain about the game being a grind-fest and that it has nothing real to offer. It's an open sandbox; there is no "we'll lead you along a pre-scripted storyline". Just go have fun.
The galaxy is huge, so even if you go to the "Open" mode versus "Solo", unless you stay near the starter systems or find a place where everyone is hanging out, you might not see another real player for quite some time.
-
I will say there is a loan option if you lose your ship(up to a certain amount) the payback is 10 percent of what you make til ya pay it off.I started by hauling light loads while looking for bounties while doing missions, so I was fairly busy to start and was able to upgrade quick, I also figured out what I liked doing more..which was exploring(go figure) As for nothing to offer.....

yep glad it does it pretty much all the time by itself as well, I've crashed suddenly and have comeback to the same point when I got back in. When the servers just went down I was actually about to save and exit but the game locked and I didn't know why until I tried to get back in. LOL went to jump in AH and it was down as well.

Yes pedals work fine. People say yaw is 'nerfed' because they can't spin round quickly using it, but there is more than enough to help get lined up for docking or making small adjustments to course during 'supercruise'. Good Luck. :aok

You're kidding? Blackadder is hilarious! :rofl
-
He's not kidding, he's just ignorant of the facts. It's understandable, with all the Downton Abbey type stuff on TV these days it's not at all surprising that a Yank has never heard of a 1980s historical situational comedy and assumes it'll be the same.

I have seen Black Adder on tv and I feel my description is just. Not a fan sorry. UK humour just don't get me, that Canadian and Aussie stuff tho is brilliant.

It's dry, intelligent humour, doesn't appeal to everyone. Most people probably don't like Red Dwarf either.

I do :)

I'm a "Yank", and a big fan of many British comedies. And yes, I liked Red Dwarf...you smegheads.
Getting back on the topic of Elite...I find it funny to read their official forums and see all the arguments and name-calling regarding Open Play verus Solo Play. It's a lot like the LW crowd belittling the EW/MW crowd - "You don't play my way, so you are not real men and probably couldn't hack it in my world anyway". LOL, they throw "carebear" around a lot.

I think that's pretty much universal when it comes to sandbox mode online games. In EvE it's exactly the same, I have read several times that I have no place in there and have to gtfo just because I'm often halfk-afk mining away in highsec belts. Reminded me instantly of my early days in AH when I was told that bomber and GV players should gtfo of this dogfighting sim (seriously).
And in regard to Alack Adder: the Final episode of "Black Adder goes forth" was just brilliant. A heartbreaking & negative end of a comedy series that really worked.

It's understandable, a lot of UK tv shows need to be dumbed down for the US audience, like Top Gear, Life on Mars and so forth.

don't get me wrong I get the joke and can even see how some would find it funny, I just don't find it funny. I don't think it's a question of something needing to be 'dumbed down' I just think the dry delivery is why it's not very funny. I'm going to ignore the hook on this one.

yeah that just isn't funny sorry, and while I haven't watched much of the show as I have said I have watched some of it and the dude in that video really seems to not fit in with the whole 'more intelligent' description of humor I mean" all right chaps lets break out the <something> and talk about me til the <something something>"

Question about the game specs:
Do you think that a rig with Intel Core i7 - 2600K CPU, 4GB Ram and a Nvidia GeForce GTX 570 would be enough to run the game decently?
Thanks for your impressions and advices :)

Cmdr Oscar Gogo. The system I'm in is called something like LHS-3447...
Total n00b, just bought the game yesterday. Made some cash by doing some intra system trading.
Docking and navigation could be a little more challenging (I'm a KSP veteran) but the game is good fun.

Try doing it with flight assist off and if you pull it off post it on youtube cause id love to see it :)

Same area as me. I'm bounty hunting. It's incredibly easy, with the Rift and X52 setup I can make short work of most targets (except bigger ships). I upgraded to an Eagle, then a Viper, but the Viper flies like a pig... so I went down to an Eagle kitted out with the best gear I can lay my hands on. I disable the targets shields first then go in close and shove a couple of missiles into them at very close range. It's literally acquire, laser laser laser shields down, missile missile POOF!
The game is stunning on the Rift, you feel like you really are in the cockpit, you look down and get confused when your arms don't move in relation to IRL :D

I'm still waiting for the mainstream release version with its upgraded specs before purchasing.

Feel free to send me a friend request in the game. Name is Vanlandinghale.
On a side note, I've been spending most of my time in the Cobra Mk.III. To me it feels like the equivalent of the P38/Mosquito in space. Doing mostly bounty hunting in LSH 3447. I hear there are very wonderful places to go, with a very nice change of scenery when visiting the nebulae nearby ~1,000 light years away from SOL. Once I bank up some credits, I will probably branch out several hundred/thousand light years away to go exploring.
-
Hanging mostly in Brani for now, trading and hunting some. I use an Eagle for hunting and a Adder for trading, got some good short [20ly]trade routes going.
-
Mostly I'm in my type 6 cargo hauling rares around, saved up to 6.8mil currently. Each rare run gets a profit of about 700k and only takes about 40 mins. Really want that type 7 for trading.
There is really good trade money to be made right now in a system called Tenche about 190ly from the Lave region. Go to Blaauw Hub and buy performance enhancers then just 9Mm away is a trade group seeking luxuries that you can sell them to. Making about 120k per 5 minute run on that one in the type 6.
Also got a cobra with about 4mil put into it, 1x500k beam lazer for the shield and 3 multi-cannons to finish them off. Keeping it parked near a conflict zone and collecting combat bonds when ever the trade grind is boring me too much.

If you go exploring plan accordingly when it comes to routes, jumping in between 2 binary stars is no fun neither is finding yourself in a patch of y class stars and not being able to scoop any fuel  lucky for me there was an m class mixed in. :pray
Here is a good go to guide https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=81653&highlight=exploration+guide
When it comes to weapons I really like a railgun take practice but man is the ZZAPP--POW effect cool.
-
On my Cobra, I have two nose-mounted fixed multi-cannons. On the underside wingtips, I have two gimballed beam lasers. The setup is working really well for me. The beams strip the shields quickly and once they're down, the multi-cannons deliver a very powerful punch.
I have a button on my throttle that I use to press and hold to temporarily disable flight assist. I use this sparingly when needing to whip the nose of the spacecraft around to deal with the small turn 'n burn ships like the Sidewinder and Eagle. I've tried flying with flight assist off entirely and I suck at it. :bhead It's very tough to fly when you have fixed guns.

I am currently beta testing the next upgrade, 1.1 and a lot of the current issues have been addressed, such as the accidental shooting of AI vessels:
- When the player accidentally hits an AI ship damage is accumulated. If a threshold is exceeded (by multiple hits or a powerful weapon like a rail-run), the ship turns hostile. The AI ship will "forget" the damage before it turns hostile:
1) if the AI ship recharges its shield to 100%.
2) if a (currently 30 sec) timer runs out.
- Make the system apply to stations as well.
Also you can now plan routes of up to 1000 LYs in the Galaxy Map in a matter of seconds! There is also apparently a filter to check for scoopable stars on the route but I've not managed to find that yet. I was on a long journey yesterday and my fuel was getting dangerously low after several unscoopable stars in a row (or interdictions when I did find one! :D). Rather than carrying on with my pre-planned route, I checked the map for any nearby systems with stations offering refuelling and diverted there. As it turned out, I didn't have to go to the station as I found a scoopable star on the way and topped up the tank there. Then back on track to my original destination. :)
You can get a complete list of the changes here: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=108887 (https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=108887)
Many of us use one of the many Teamspeak servers available to communicate - a search in the forum will bring up several pages of posts mentioning Teamspeak plus many of the groups you can join have their own servers. I am in the Mobius group so can use theirs, otherwise i use Lave Radio's Teamspeak. :)
The in-game text usually works OK for me - I was in Open on the beta yesterday and saw another commander at a star as I was scooping fuel, so said hi. He replied and we carried on our separate ways.... it was then my scan on his ship completed and I saw he was Dangerous and Wanted! :O However, I am Harmless and Clean and in the beta it is now a crime to interdict someone who is clean. :D

It would be great if they would pay HTC $1,000,000+ for their netcode and vox code. The current 32-player-max P2P instance based on your location and crappy vox capability sucks. Plus the obvious hacking I've been reading about, partly due to the P2P nature of multiplayer, is keeping me in Solo.
-
I don't see why you need to play solo (not that I care), but you can still function on the fringe of civilization where the ones that venture there are descent folks.
Anyway, I went exploring and have not seen an another human contact for 3 weeks. The first and only guy I encounter is ... Nathan :lol 400 Billion star systems ... 250,000 players ... what are the odds!?

When 1.1 is released, it will show tags with 'First discovered by' in the Galaxy map and I am testing it works OK in the beta at the moment. Anyone 'first to discover' a system will also get a message pop up after selling their Cartographic data and listing which systems are included. :)

To give you guys a sense of scale on how big this game really is, I've supplied a few screenshots from in the game, particularly from the galaxy map. The galaxy map can be used to plot your routes to wherever you want to go in the Milky Way. From my current location to the center of the galaxy, the distance is about 26,000 light years. My Cobra has a jump range of about ~10 light years. This means it would take AT LEAST 2,600 consecutive jumps to get to the center from where I'm at, assuming I don't have to take lengthy detours.

- The two pictures above is when zoomed up close to the core of the galaxy, where the highest concentration of starts are collected. Each dot you see in the night sky is a unique star system that you can presumably fly to. Can you count how many stars are in just one picture?

also each time you jump to a new system the 'jump' is actually a loading screen or so I've read makes sense to me
-
Any comparison is just idiotic.
-
The loading screen between each jump is correct. The nice thing the developers did is disguise the loading screen with an animation of traveling through hyperspace, which helps with immersion. Each new system you jump into, a new skybox is rendered- distant nebulae moves closer/further depending on which direction you travel to.

Any tips on using a joystick to make the ship go zoom? needed key bindings etc? any help would be appreciated..

it was quick to me for how big the game is its pretty gentle on computers, you will have to set up the controls how ya like it The game is set up so that your right hand is on the stick and you use the interface with keys on your left hand you can modify tho. I would advise you do the tutorials and start ioff in solo play til you get confident, and to learn how to fly without flight assist at least a little bit.
-
Any comparison is just idiotic.
comparison to what?
-
Between AH and ED.
-
Between AH and ED.
Nobody has made that comparison, 2 completely different games. I will now tho: for combat AH completely destroys ED IMO but you cant explore or trade or mine in AH. The greifers have pretty much ran most traders into solo play in ED and pirates have a tough time as there is no real way to make people drop cargo except to disable them and that's apparently a fine line as 1 too many shots and you can destroy people. IMO ED is not a complete game and there is work to be done but exploration works and that's why I play the game. When I wanna dogfight its all about that AH nothing else I play can compare to that AH furball that leaves ya shaking so no there is no comparison between the 2.

Plus the main game includes the tutorial missions. Even though you might have a separate launcher entry for them, there is no need to run the tutorial outside of the main game...they were there for the pre-release buyers so they'd have something to play with until the main release came out.

You're always in a tiny pocket, It's called the field of visibility.
Certainly true, however the field of visibility in ED is much smaller and much less detailed than the 20k (?) pocket filled with landscape in AH. Most of ED's graphics are just skybox with no actual 3D construction to render.
-
I have no idea about mechanics in ED :old:
The game good to play :)
AH is awesome
Please remove the brewster :old:

Not quite relevant but each star you see in the sandbox is an actual system, correctly oriented. Notice how they highlight when you select systems. At least that's what I read somewhere on the forum, might be not true :lol Sorry ... carry on chaps :D

Actually ED has double the visible area at most times since it doesn't have the earth and atmosphere blocking a good part of the 360 view and in space visibility is theoretically speaking much better.
The 3D world in a flight sim is a relatively narrow strip constructed of a bottom globe and the top altitude of planes in game, about 45000 feet. So sims like AH have no point rendering objects in 3D that are further than the 15-20 mile visibility bubble and even that is continuously bordered by bottom and top borders of earth and flight ceiling of planes. As everyone knows, AH has a fairly short 'dot distance' after which no plane should be 3D rendered anymore. The further the objects are, the less detailed the rendering will be (or should be) as you can't make out any detail on them anyway. Even detail that is right next to the player but can't be seen by him at the current view angle and position does not get rendered at all. This way you can have lightning fast speed and great visuals. All developed game engines use this kind of techniques and more.

The image portrayed here illustrates excellently that even from the 15-20 mile bubble of visibility, any single game client can only see the FOV strip at any given time. Nothing else needs to be rendered.

As I play ED more I appreciate the layout of the menus more - they are amazing with the rift. The menu / control system is dreamy.
My brute force attacks seem to be working reasonable well, using a kitted out eagle, take down shields with lasers, full ahead ramming speed then unleash unguided missiles at close range :D

I found a good route for trading rare goods which should net around 500-600K profit per hour. Round trip should net around 1.2 million. I recommend a ship with around 40 tons of cargo with a jump range of at least 13 light years. Fit a fuel scoop to help w/ refueling along the way. I'm running this route to save up for an ASP Explorer. Once I get that, I'm going to set sail for the galactic core, and beyond, for exploration.
Below is the route:
Trip 1 - Purchase the following items at these locations
System: 39 Tauri Station: Porta Item: Tauri Chimes
System: Fujin Station: Futen Spaceport Item: Fujin Tea
System: Geras Station: Yurchikhin Port Item: Gerasian Gueuze Beer (this system takes about 20 minutes to fly to the station as it is over 1 million light seconds from the jump in point- you may skip this run if desired)
Set destination to Zaonce and sell the purchased goods (this trip is approximately 160 light years)
Trip 2 - Purchase the following items at these locations (these systems are in close proximity to each other, so acquiring these goods should be fairly quick)
System: Zaonce Station: Ridley Scott Item: Leathery Eggs
System: Lave Station: Lave Station Item: Lavian Brandy
System: Leesti Station: George Lucas Item: Azure Milk / Leestian Evil Juice
System: Diso Station: Shifnalport Item: Diso Ma Corn
System: Uszaa Station: Guest Installation Item: Uszaian Tree Grub
System: Orrere Station: Sharon Lee Free Market Item: Orrerian Vicious Brew
Set destination back to 39 Tauri and sell the purchased goods. Rinse and repeat. Round trip takes approximately 1.5-2 hours depending on the ship used and jump range.

Ripley, you really have no understanding of how things are rendered in a 3D environment.
Just real quick. There are images in this thread which could be rendered using two triangles and one bitmap and a handful (< 20) of point draws. That is how much work it is to display space. A typical frame of any ground based game is usually around 75,000 (or more) triangles, and many bitmaps (bump, normal, specular...).
High detailed terrain will always trump space based games in the effort it takes to draw them.

and then the next day, I un-learn it :D

You're making the assumption that the planets etc. in the images are just flat 2D backgrounds which they partly probably are (level of detail adjust) but the planets and stars in the jump system are highly unlikely to be just 2D objects - not to mention other players and docking stations.
That was not the point however, the point was that game engine makers seem to create techniques like field of view blocking like in the image. I know for a fact that the more developed game engines use level of detail maps that reduce detail according to view distance (for the reasons mentioned before) and also draw only the visible area of the screen. This means that graphics wise it makes no difference what happens all around you, you can only see the fairly narrow strip that is your field of view.
That, then, means that map size plays no role whatsoever in obtainable graphics quality as far as GPU rendering power requirements go. Your system is either able to render that small strip to the longest set view distance (which is not the whole map border to border unless the map is very small) or not. Makes no difference if there are a gazillion objects that are outside your view distance or field of view. Well, unless you have an engine that renders invisible objects and bogs down your system due to not being optimized.
In AH that would basically mean that when you sit in the cockpit, nothing that is behind your cockpit (dash, bars, wings, clouds etc) at any given second, does not get rendered or even handled in the GPU untill the very second it crosses your field of view and needs to be displayed. Just like that field of view image, all the 'shadow' areas of the image do not even exist as far as GPU sees it.
I'm basing all this to the stuff I've read of the technical documentation of various game engines. Of course I might be totally wrong - this is the impression I've got from studying game engines so far. Maybe there's some specific reason why invisible objects should need to be rendered outside of what you can see.
I'm not taking into account the logistics of tracking hundreds of players and objects which is obviously huge, I'm only talking about the rendering part.
-

Not making any assumptions at all. I am telling you how far distant objects can be drawn if they are done efficiently. Even if you wanted to draw it all manually, space only needs one pair of triangles. The rest is drawn on top of it.
That was not the point however, the point was that game engine makers seem to create techniques like field of view blocking like in the image. I know for a fact that the more developed game engines use level of detail maps that reduce detail according to view distance (for the reasons mentioned before) and also draw only the visible area of the screen. It is called mipmapping (several models of the same object with decreasing detail as the distance increases), and every game engine has been using that technique for the last 20 years. When well done, you are not aware it is happening, like in Aces High.
The rest is called clipping (drawing only what is visible), and has been done even longer.
Neither of these features are the exclusive domain of "more developed game engines". This is basic/novice level 3D programming, you are talking about.
That, then, means that map size plays no role whatsoever in obtainable graphics quality as far as GPU rendering power requirements go. Your system is either able to render that small strip to the longest set view distance (which is not the whole map border to border unless the map is very small) or not. I always figured AH could effectively model space flight physics, as an aside to the graphics thing. Turn off gravity and drag and there ya go. It would probably surpass most space games that kinda try to 'fly' space like an arcade ride.

I guess it's easier to resort to ad hominem instead of explaining why a game client would need to render anything that is outside it's field of view and thus negating completely the effect of the size of the map of the equation.
If War Thunder etc. can produce stunning visuals and they have a similar view distance and field of view compared to AH, how would map size take effect (to graphics) if we forget the added load of tracking larger amount of objects in virtual space?
You can compare the situation like if you were playing nethack. You stumble through a vast dungeon and you have a lantern as your light source (field of view). Even though the dungeon is huge, you only see the are that your lantern can light up at any time. The single game client is like a character in the night with it's lantern, a bubble of 'light' in the dark.
Why is my analogy wrong, please I would really like to know.

Thinking about 3d drawing and stuff makes my head hurt, I'm not even going to try and understand it.

Now this I agree with 100 percent, and have said so before as well. When the Claw came out I was playing a browser based Battlestar Galactica game, which SUCKED by comparison to what I was seeing with the Claw and the HTC Mothership for it. I said HTC should contact BSG people or whatever, and offer to build them a REAL space game with Battlestars, Vipers, Raiders, and Cylon BaseStars. Would have, could have, been great. Probably still could be, but I'm sure the time will never be there for such a project now, but I agree completely that HTC could build a great space fighter pewpew game.

Nothing. I'm just curious.

You're having a technical argument about game graphics with a developer of a graphic game and behaving as though you are more of an authority on the subject. I don't buy this being a 'curiosity' thing.

The only thing I said about rendering anything outside the view was to define what you said (i.e. clipping). I do not know any game client which renders anything that is not on the screen. Like I said before, that was all flushed out over 20 years ago. Why am I using 20 years? Well, I happen to have completed a game engine exactly 20 years ago this month and it did clipping, culling, mipmapping. All those things you think are the domain for 'more developed game engines', which is just nonsense. The first thing any 3D graphic coder/designer learns is, "The fastest triangle you will draw, is the one you do not need to draw."
If War Thunder etc. can produce stunning visuals and they have a similar view distance and field of view compared to AH, how would map size take effect (to graphics) if we forget the added load of tracking larger amount of objects in virtual space?
WT does not have near the same view distance, nor the same default field of view, and we do track an unlimited number of objects. All those things impact performance. Visuals are more about artwork than anything else. They have 9GB of data, we currently have far less than 500MB.
Does WT look better than the current Aces High release? Yep, it sure does.

It is based on assumptions which have no basis in reality. Nothing you have said has been constructive. Each time I have pointed out a correction you have countered with misdirection and defensive posturing. Or you have simply resorted to making outlandish statements, which have no basis in reality.
By the way, people who are simply 'curious' about topics, ask questions. They do not make definitive statements about topics they have limited knowledge of.

LOl I went in a sold my exploration data on the way in I hit a NAV point and took some bounties in my adder. I had fun with that so I bought an eagle and kitted it out 25 minutes later back at the nav point Im up to 103k In bounties only 200 rnds in each multicannon an imperial clipper down to 10% hull and the damn thing belly flops me and takes me out. :cry So I buy another eagle and thus starts a long and frustrating morning in which I probably killed 200+k in bounties but kept dying so only made like 80 can be frustrating some time lol I'm done with my break from exploring eagle is back in the shed until I need another break and I head back in.

I always like how HTC is candid about this subject when they chose to speak about it - for all the wanking about graphics, it seems to me (this is a curious question, not a statement, just an asssumption) that it's either one thing or the other with current CPU and GPU power - have a huge environment with lots of tracked objects, or the "look at the pretty lights". Question part of it - do you ever think a time will come where you can do both Skuzzy? Based on how CPU and GPU power is increasing, any guess of when in the future it could be possible? Slap WT background graphics on HTC plane models and game structure, and it's no question to anyone that HTC would have the most superior flight sim product anywhere, end of story. What we're seeing with the new screen shots looks like a progression towards something along these lines.
By the way, people who are simply 'curious' about topics, ask questions. They do not make definitive statements about topics they have limited knowledge of.
Hah, perfect.

My curiosity was based on a few observations I've made about the AH game engine in the past. Such as when ground clutter put clients on their knees or when I had a flaky graphics driver and textures were missing from my cockpit. Sure enough, planes which were supposed to be blocked behind panels and wings were beautifully rendered and visible through the missing texture.
This lead me to believe that perhaps AH does not employ such techniques.
-
well with 1.1 they completely screwed up how I explore, being able to see if someone has been to a system before you makes me pretty much immediately move on lol. On the plus side there are quite a few planets and stars with my name next to them now :aok . Damn lag spike right before server reset jus about killed me as when I finally got done with the lag I was at 70% hull and at 340+ temp used all my heatsinks real fast. I did find planet Skidmark tho

so knowing your graphics card wasn't up to snuff you assumed it was AH coding?
-
so knowing your graphics card wasn't up to snuff you assumed it was AH coding?
The graphics card was more than 'up to snuff' there was some glitch that made textures transparent. If clipping was used by the engine, areas which were supposed to be covered by the texture should have been blank AFAIK. Yet you could see all the terrain and the planes normally. At one point you could also see hit flashes through your textures when deflection shooting, made tracking shots easyer (this was a bug that got fixed in later revisions of AH). That also shouldn't be possible if the engine really did clip the view.
So, while I'm not an expert on the subject, these few observations have made me curious to these questions.
Another question is that is HTC planning to get rid of the ancient 500Mb limitation? It has long since ceased to be a virtue and become a burden. In the day and age of megabit internet speeds being the norm, download sizes could be vastly increased and through that textures improved.
-

have you ever looked at the skin files or models(whatever they are called) of the vehicles in AH? they are not all 1 piece and do in fact get put together by the system just like all games do AFAIK, so when things aren't all one solid piece and your card is a dud you will get artifacts no matter what game you are playing. Nothing modeled in 3d is all one piece so you will get these glitches in any game. Im no expert either and Im sure someone who knows what they are talking about will be along to explain this better than me.

What I meant had nothing to do with the textures themselves. I suspected that wings, panels etc. which according to the model should have been non-transparent, should have blocked the terrain and other fighters in the engine thus not getting rendered. In the event of a missing texture, you should see only a black hole if the engine did clip and leave the area unrendered. By seeing everything get rendered normally despite they should have been totally invisible at that position could only lead to the question - does AH really clip.

I would prefer the 3D discussion to move to its own thread.
Nathan, the beam laser "melted metal track" has been there all along - it's not new to 1.1. You just had to get close enough to the other ship to see it. And even if someone else already "discovered" a system, as long as it shows "undiscovered" by your ship's computer, you can scan it and sell the data too. You just won't get your name in lights as "first discovered by".

OP is right - regarding that, I've been waiting for this day, the release of the 1.1 to see if I should get into this or not. I have a dozen games sitting I still haven't even tried yet, which makes even entertaining a new space sim ridiculous probably, but in this case an exception is probably warranted - I hope. Which is why feedback is not just solicited it's needed! What is 1.1 like, what has it changed or made better, and fixed and so on.
The one thing stopping me is I always prefer the "fight" game to the mine/haul game, and it seems if you attack people with cargo, you get hugely penalized in the game, and get fines and markers and stuff that really limit your success. Is there targets you can often attack without getting a penalty? This is truly what has kept me out of it this long, thinking I"ll have to resort to killing only the rarely seen "bad guy" without incurring some dumb penalty and fine, and have to resort to basketweaving missions, which is boooo.

You ship has a auto-scanner that will do a basic scan of a targeted ship. You will find out the ship type, pilot name (NPC name or human "CMDR" name), and if they are "wanted" in the current star system. If they are wanted, you can open fire immediately and if you kill them, you can collect any bounty on them. If they are not wanted in the system, if they shoot and hit you first, they become wanted, and you can kill them.
There is also something you can buy called a "Kill Warrant Scanner". This is a deeper scan of the GalNet system and will uncover any addition bounties against the targeted vessel. It covers all system in the galaxy, not just the current one you're in. In an Anarchy system, there is no local law, so everyone shows as "clean" and you need to do a KWS to determine if they have any bounty at all. But, you also do not get charged with a crime if you shoot at them first.
You will find many people "afraid" of PvP encounters, and they'll either run away, pull the plug (yes that does happen), or call you a "griefer" because you shot them. lol
-
Thing ut people being labeled a greifer is that the limpets aren't working I heard so pirates try to pop open your cargo hatch but end up popping your hull, if they could fix the limpets I think their would be less greifing then again there are dorks that like to fire DF missiles towards a station and when your point defense goes off you hit the station and get blasted. I know fixes are in the works for this and the wire jigglers. Games not perfect but the is no subscription. I got it cuz I figured Id get my 50 bucks out of it and I have done so in spades. The new heat changes I hope will balance combat a lil more when It comes to pvp hate getting salvo after of salvos and beams keeping my shields down with what seemed like no heat discipline.

I think limpets work, people just forget you need to have the enemy shields down :)

I've been a backer for SC for a while, but after reading this thread I decided to grab a copy of ED. I've only done the tutorial missions (still downloading the full game) but first impression is, like someone already mentioned, combat seems a little better in SC. Controls in SC seem to cater to combat and the early ships seem more maneuverable. That being said, ED seems to have more focus on the exploring and vastness of space which I'm excited to check out. I'm not real interested in the combat aspect of either game anyway.

AH is for combat :old:

Interesting game.
Commander Pythicles
I'll be sending out requests this weekend to all those who posted their in-game names... Currently around the Allobog system collecting bounties in my shiny new viper...
Thinking I want the explored by tag though, may switch it up. Just tried mining in my adder last night... Not impressed. Especially after collecting 250k bounties from flipping from resource collection site to resource collection site and using K-warrant scanner on every wanted ship.

I am an early backer at SC as well, I have a very low membership number, and have been flying it for quite a while and frequently in the arena, in the Arena Commander head 2 head games. The ability to use trackIR to aim your gimbal mounted guns along with the decoupling ability and various flight modes makes for a very complex dogfighting environment, with a lot of potential "moves" out there.
The game itself though is quite boring beyond that, since it's in the infancy stages really. I'm looking for other stuff to do, hence the ED queries, but I don't want a game where fighting is somehow penalized, and if you attack some guy just minding his business, you have to grind away to get rid of penalties for doing so. That seems lame to me, and is what is still holding me back. I want to be able to attack anyone I want without penalty, they should either be able to defend themselves or suffer the consequences IMO, a game where trash haulers and explorers are protected in the same space where fighters want to fight - no thanks.

Got my first player kill last night, 687 credits... probably some newbie that had fired at a federal police ship :devil .

Pretty much the same impression I've gotten from both games. Picked up ED for the same reason, basically a game to get my space fix in until SC gets further along.
also forgot in my first post, name in both games is Dom1no.

well piracy is a crime, but I do believe if there is a system that is in contention you can fight on behalf of one of the factions

The ones that get 1 shot killed by a Security Anaconda's cruise missile?:neener:

You can go to an "Anarchy" system everyone is a free target there.
Same game name in ED as here hit me up
-
When you say "Anarchy" system, is that an actual star system on the same server everyone plays on, a certain area in space that these rules apply, or is it a completely separate login, a different server altogether. If it's the former, I'll probably sign up today and check the game out.
-
Gman,
There are a lot of anarchy systems that are simply places where no major faction controls it, so it's a free for all. Some have stations in them where rare items are traded, so they get high traffic.
-
Also,
right now there are 3 game modes, that I can tell. Open world, private, and solo. All three are the exact same game, same systems, etc. You log out at a station in one, and you'll be in that same spot in another mode. The difference is that Open = PvP. Private = private group of friends, etc. Solo= just NPCs.
edit... and I realize that's not what you were asking... It's all essentially one server, but some star systems are more governed than others... I went on a killing spree in one and racked up 130K credits with no fines. In another system I attacked a "wanted" ship that was fighting federation navy npcs and still got hit with a fine.
-
There are several government types, but only three "main" factions (Federation, Alliance, Empire). A system is classified with whatever faction controls the major station of that system. Any crimes in that system, like firing on "clean" ship, will earn you a fine and possible bounty in that major faction. A system that has no faction ownership or formal government is an "Anarchy" system, and being there is no law there, everybody is "clean" in the system. That's why Anarchy systems are popular places for people to hang out...you don't get in trouble for landing the first shot in a fight.
-

You probably clipped a fed ship with a laser, it's annoying. Thought it was supposed to be fixed in 1.1 but it is still happening to me when some dumb AI flies into the line of fire.

I know this is bit of a necro bump, but I just started playing ED and would love to catch up with some of you all. hit me with your ed names. Mine is Oryon...

Well, as Steam had a weekend sale on Elite:Dangerous and also now offers a refund for games that just don't work for you, I tried my luck and downloaded it.
To my surprise it seems to run quite well, even though I don't even meet the minimum system requirements (only 2 core CPU here).
Of course, I didn't get far yet, took me quite some time to figure out the basics. Now I got only like 20 minutes left to find a place that will tax my system harder than just the initial tutorials...

An after some 100 hours I find the gameplay experience quite limited. Best summed up for me with the quote "Miles wide, inches deep".
First, it's not really what I'd call a MMO - the player interaction possibilities are quite limited. The missions you can get at the bases are very limited also and have nothing like a storyline or any atmosphere to them.
After trading rares to buy some decent equipment (easy & boring) Then I went on to fulfill my dream and head out to the stars for some exploration! After a few hundred systems, it quickly became boring and repetitive as well: Jump, throttle back, scan, race to the most valuable bodies for a detailed survey and off to the next system. Just staring at my screen and pushing buttons (as there ain't even an autopilot which a I could use while making another cup of tea). No real feeling of achievement, the shiny stars & planets quickly became "all the same" and there is nothing you can do with all that gained knowledge than hitting a button at the end of the voyage to cash in your 5 million credits.
I was definitely expecting more, especially more interaction opportunities in a game advertised as MMO.
Definitely not an AH replacement candidate for me
-
I agree. Yet a lot of what u describe is in AH too, like no strory line, all bases at the same. What's lacking is the lack of player interaction, or even NPC interraction in the sense everythingbis faceless. The sandbox is there, but maybe too big for its own good and the procedure generation does not offer variety.
You think Star Citizen will be better?
-
SC will have the advantage of everything being designed, so hopefully variety and the number of things to do will be better. Relatively, size will suffer though.
My main concern is that SC's going to wind up feeling too small. I think that will likely work to its advantage somewhat because there will be more opportunities for interaction. I know for myself, I would rather play in a smaller game universe that is full of busy stuff going on instead of a giant empty universe. Kind of similar to large vs small maps in AH.
Until it actually gets up and running beyond the combat arenas I don't think it can be judged in any meaningful way though.
I haven't gotten ED because it looked to me like a more polished version of the Evochron series, and that got stale for me too quickly to justify getting into ED.
The tricky part with games like that is, no matter what the actual gameplay is limited. At the end of the day it all boils down to going from point A to B with or without cargo (trading vs exploring), collecting resources or mining, or fighting something. SC's also going to have the FPS portion which will likely help the game from getting too repetitive.
If the way they implement that gameplay is fun, it works. They can come up with all the backstory they want, and all the story reasons why you're supposed to be doing what you're doing they want, but it won't make boring gameplay fun.

SC can render Star systems in a 1 for 1 scale. This includes Planetary Bodies.

Yeah, but you're not going to be moving around and fighting in a zone that's actually that size at the combat speeds ingame.
Wiley.
-
You will be in that area during combat or exploration or just traveling across the system. Combat speeds are very slow compared to the travel speeds. Zones are just used to describe how it will work on the back end. If you encounter other players or npcs the back end servers can spool up a zone that basically covers anyone entering or exiting that particular space. IE a server that is just being used to keep track of a smaller area for more precision.

You can get Elite Dangerous base game right now for $26 on steam but you will have to shell out more for future expansions.
