I started feeling old when they started playing 90s rock on the local "Classic" rock station.... I was only born in the 90s 

Hah!

If I hear Soundgarden on a classic rock station, I'll become wildly depressed.

To avoid that, I've quit listening to terrestrial radio completely. Thus, Soundgarden happily resides in my "new stuff" list on Spotify.

Pretty much the same here. The term Classic Rock was started in the 80s to differentiate from the dreaded disco, new wave and hair bands. It wasn't the same, it was exaggerated out of proportion. Robert Plant once said (paraphrasing) to go back and try to out-do what we did back then would be stupid.
