Title: Fourth Tri-Annual Dueling Bracket & Results
Post by: BaldEagl on May 30, 2010, 01:09:47 PM
Ready to get started?

This is the smallest turnout of the four tournaments so far but what I'm really dissapointed by is that we were'nt even able to fill the small 64 player bracket.  We have 58 players participating so that leaves six players with week one byes.  For this reason I will accept up to six more players as long as you sign up by midnight tonight.  Sign up in THIS thread.  I will accept the first six to sign up who will be randomly assigned to one of the unmatched players along with a randomly selected first duel aircraft.  I'll post these match-up updates in this thread.

Don't forget there have been rules changes and that the quarterfinal rounds forward have been expanded to best of five with modified plane selection rules.  Please review the rules before beginning (posted below).  Also remember that deadlines have been moved to Noon CDT Sundays rather than the normal midnight Sunday deadlines of the past.  I have modified the rules to reflect this.

So here's the roster (listed by in-game name).  You can reach your opponent to arrange your duel by BBs PM using his BBs name.  Let me know if I've made any mistakes:

Post by: BaldEagl on May 30, 2010, 01:10:48 PM
Rules:

- Brackets will be determined by random draw of names produced by a random number generator in MS Excel.
- If the number of players exceeds a full round I will work them into the bracket although they will have to fly one more round than other players.  They will be chosen randomly and disbursed evenly through pre-selected slots in the bracket to achieve balance at the nearest bracket root(s).
-   If a player changes their in-game or BBs name during the tournament they must either post that change in the bracket and results thread or PM me with the change.
- Duels must be arranged between the players by PM, IM, e-mail or other means to take place by noon CST/CDT Sunday following each bracket update (6 days).
- Duels will be best of three until the quarterfinal round.  From the quarterfinal round forward all duels will be best of five.
- First duel plane selection will be assigned using a random number generator to select from all available fighter and fighter/attack aircraft (except the Me163 and Me262).  This will be done individually for each set of duelers.
- During the elimination rounds the loser of each duel selects the aircraft for the next duel.  This allows the loser to pick his/her best aircraft to get back into contention and if it goes three rounds each player will have had one plane selection.  From the quarterfinals forward the player who is behind in the series chooses the next duel aircraft.  This means they could choose as many as three times consecutively to try to get back into contention (they lose the first and second duels then win the third making it 1-2 and get to choose for the third time for instance).  If the series becomes tied at any point then the loser of the last duel chooses.
- All duels will take place in the DA canyon area.
- All duels will be 25% fuel load out with player’s choice of gun package and convergence.
- All merges will be guns cold (no firing until you have passed your opponent's 3/9 line).
- All merges will be co-alt at 10K until within icon range at which point a merge break can begin.  In addition all players shall observe a 10K ceiling and floor (within reason) at all times prior to the merge.
- Anything goes after the initial merge.
- In the case of a draw (both run out of fuel for instance) that duel will be re-fought using the same aircraft.
- In the case of a collision:
   * If only one player collides (only one gets the collision message) the duel continues.
   * If both players collide (both get the collision message) the duel immediately ends and will be re-started in the same planes.
- Ditching or bailing constitutes forfeiture of the duel.
- The intent is for players to remain in close proximity to one another (2-3K max).  That said if at any time the players lose icon range on one another the duel ends immediately and will be re-started using the same planes.  This should allow a dueler to simply turn away from a runner to nullify the duel.
- If an uninvited third party interrupts the duel the duel is immediately ended and will be re-started using the same plane.  The dueling participants may move to another mutually agreed upon set of fields in the DA in this instance.
- Once one player has been shot down and the other receives a kill message the duel ends.  There is no need to land.
- If a player disco's the duel will be re-fought in the same planes as soon as the discoing player re-logs.  If he does not or is unable to re-log within 15 minutes he will lose the duel series by default.  A second disco by the same player in a duel series will result in forfeiture of the remaining duels in that series.
- Both players will film all duels from take-off in case of a dispute.  These films must be saved until at least noon on the Tuesday following the duel or until 48 hours after the end of any granted extension in case of a dispute.  If a dispute arises then they must be saved until such dispute is settled.
- Films must be posted by the winning player for all duels from the quarter final round forward for the viewing pleasure of the community.  Films may be posted during earlier rounds if both participants agree.
- The losing player will post in this thread after the duel series in the following format:

   Plane - Winner
   Plane - Winner
   Plane - Winner (if needed)

The loser posting is a means to verify that the results are uncontested.  If the loser hasn't posted by the deadline then the winner may post the results but they will be deemed contested and films will be required to verify the win.
- This information must be posted by no later than 12:00 noon CST/CDT (as appropriate) Sunday following the posting of the updated bracket so that I can get the brackets updated and re-posted on Sunday afternoon/evening.
- If a player does not show within 15 minutes of the arranged time they forfeit the series.  In that case the winner by default must post a message confirming the arranged duel time and a screenshot of the DA roster showing that the opponent is a no show no later than 12:00 noon CDT Sunday following posting of the updated bracket.
- If a duel cannot be arranged between two players each player will have a chance to post the circumstances in the Bracket and Results thread prior to the posting deadline.  If only one player posts and it is clear that they are making an attempt to arrange their duel then that player will advance, provided their post was at least 48 hours prior to the round closing deadline. If both players post and it is clear that the issue lies with only one player then the player not at fault will advance.  If it is unclear which player is at fault, if neither player posts, or if a single player posts inside the 48 hour window then a random draw will determine which player advances.
- Each player has the opportunity to review films of their duels for potential rules violations.  If a player suspects a rules violation they can petition the review committee via PM.  Both regular and alternate committee members, the tournament administrator and the opposing player must be copied on the petition (the review committee members, alternates and administrator are listed in the roster).  This petition must be filed by the regular deadlines.  The player must include a posting of their own films with the petition along with a description of what they believe the rules violation to be.  An initial determination will be made within 36 hours of the petition.  If the review committee finds sufficient evidence to further their investigation a committee spokesperson will contact the opposing player for their films of the duels.  These films must be submitted within 36 hours of the committee's request or the duel(s) in question will be forfeit by that player.  The review committee will then make a final determination no later than 36 hours after receiving those films.  The review committee may overturn posted results.  If a clean determination of a winner cannot be made the review committee will determine an appropriate course of action which could include a rematch, a random draw or the expulsion of one or both players from the tournament.  These stated actions are not intended to limit the actions that the review committee might recommend.  The review committee's determination will be final.  In any case a final determination will be posted by no later than midnight Thursday in a worst-case scenario.  If a final determination is not posted by noon Wednesday the winner of the dispute and their next opponent will automatically be given a 48 hour extension of their next duels, which must then be completed no later than noon Tuesday of the following week.  If a determination is made by noon Wednesday the normal noon Sunday deadline will be in effect.  Because this could delay both the winner's and his/her next opponent's ability to arrange their next duel it is in the best interest of everyone that the players reach an agreeable conclusion to their duels on their own.
- Violations of the official tournament rules as stated could constitute grounds for expulsion from the tournament.
- Any player caught breaking the rules twice in any tournament will be automatically ejected from the tournament.
- The initial bracket will be posted on Sunday, May 30 and each Sunday thereafter until a winner has been determined.

And now the moment you've all been waiting for... the bracket:

Good luck and have fun!

DadRabit vs JB11 (I think DadRabit can take him)

Seems like we may want to setup a rank system based on older tourneys....just my opinion its BE tournament.

If anyone wants a little pre-duel practice feel free to pop into the TA, if I'm in there I'd be happy to go a couple rounds and hopefully help someone get a bit of a handle on an unfamiliar ride.  I tend to stick to the P-38's and P-39's in the MA so it would also afford me the chance to get some time in some planes that I'm not familiar with as well.

Just a suggestion Baldeagle...(WTG on doing this again btw)  When you post a new scoreboard, name it what the old one was and make it so it replaces the one on the 1st page. Saves time looking through all the pages. <S>

So if you have a picture on page 10 and name it the same as the picture on page 1 it will change the picture on Page 1?

it used to to for photobucket images since it pulls what ever pic has that name on the page.  that is if memory serves me right since i updated some inaccurate images once this way.

So if you have a picture on page 10 and name it the same as the picture on page 1 it will change the picture on Page 1?

only if you replace the existing file with the updated file will this work. Example If page 10 picture is Skuzzy and Page 1 Picture is Hitech and you take the file from page 10 and overwrite it with page 1 picture both page 10 and page 1 picture will be Hitech :)

I think BE's doing the right thing as it is, all you have to do is: Change your view to: view the lastest posts first which is what I do already (I've had no problem).

I guess I wasnt clear. If you post the pic from your own webspace with a certain name, then rename that one oldname, and the updated pic the name the first one was, the new image is shown in its place on the first post no matter how long ago. The link or addy whatever ya call it, stays the same in the post, the change is from the users end. Its very easy to do.  But it was just a suggestion.

BE sorry could not get on today life is hectic, will try tomorrow, will send ya a PM when I get on and will hang out for a few hours.

on a side note that Yak9u not a easy plane to hit with, was flying around in it yesterday, very hard time hitting. I like the performance of it, but my aiming "skillz" (lol) are non -existent  :cry

Sorry Ink.  My schedule's been really hosed this week.  Even the weekend's screwed up.  I'll PM you with some days and times.

This has been suggested every tournament.  I use photobucket.  I never change the bracket file name but photobucket assigns it a new photobucket file number with each upload.  If what you suggest worked every 64 man bracket and every 128 man bracket through all the past tournaments would be identical.

I am not sure if something has changed but I think it will do that if you don't delete the original before uploading the new image.

It really makes no difference to me how the images are posted since I only ever hit the button that brings up the first new post anyway, but if this is how you wanted to to do things I thought it may still work.

We have our first dispute of the tournament and wouldn't you know it's me!  The administrator!

I say Ink/MORTIS won and he says I did.  I don't think the review committee has ever had to make a decision where both players were arguing that they lost.   :D  Regardless, we both had fun and the fights, for the most part, were completely awsome.

I'll let all of you, and particularily the review committee, decide who wins.

Yak-9U - Mortis
Spit IX - ?
Hurricane MkIIC - ?

And I'm posting a few re-fights in the Hurri, a re-fight in the Spit IX and a fight in the 109K-4 just for fun.  I think Ink will be posting his films too.  Check out the extended rolling fight in the last film... not sure how I wiggled out of that one.

:salute Ink.  Great fun and great flying!  Any time you want to do that again just let me know.

No.  I sent you all (the review committee) a PM and want your decisions as normal (via PM).  It's really up to you (the committee who's findings are the final authority) but I thought it might merit comments from the community as well.  If you listen to the audio you'll get the just of the dispute.  It's really a sportsmanship issue.  We each have a win we don't want to claim so we fought several more times.

By unanimous decision (with one minor qualification from one member), the review committee has made a determination on the BaldEagl vs. MORTIS duels.  The result, as I expected it to be, was:

rd #1 - Yak-9U - Mortis
rd #2 - Spit IX - BaldEagl
rd #3 - Hurricane MkIIC - Mortis

Try to arrange it.  I'm going to give you the same 48 hour extension.

Be aware that in both these cases this does not delay the next duels for whoever wins and also that it places an additional burdon on the next opponents in shortning the time frame that the have to arrange and duel the next round.

Ink...

I watched the first 3 fights and was amazed by two things.

The first was how great the Yak fight was.  I kept waiting for one of y'as to THWAK into the ground.  It is rare to have a duel last that long.  (what was it... 8 min fight at least)

The second was how many times you had BE dead to rights and missed the shot.  (especially in the 2nd fight)

All in all all three were most excellent fights and a lot of fun to watch.

 :rofl

I told ya I was horrible at targeting.

Ya the Yak fight was insane the longest fight I ever had, I don't get the adrenaline rush 1vs1 anymore heck a lot of times I need three or more nme to get that rush, I was shaking so bad after that Yak fight and then every one after  :lol

I am glad you enjoyed them, BE made a comment that he hoped people enjoyed them as much as we did having them, So :rock

Fought with Stixx earlier after a slight mixup about the time zones, totally my fault.  Really good dude and some nice fights.  I'll let him post the results as per the rules though.  Glad I got to meet him, that's one other thing this whole tourney is good for, meeting people that you didn't know already.

And Ink, I had some really enjoyable fights with you in the MA last week man, good flying and good fun.

Nine to go and only 4 hours although two were given extensions.  Sounds like there's going to be a lot of random draw advancements or advancemnts by default which means I have to dredge through this entire thread to see if people posted trying to arrange a fight.

Thanks for adding to my already hectic day.

First of all, I appologize for the delay.  I worked late every night this week plus worked on Saturday and everything else got piled into today.

We had a few late entries once the tournament got started.  They were:

In-game - BBs
AApache - AApache
BlitzVI - Tupac
mir - katanaso
SIK1 - SIK1

In other roster related news ChoZen - The Few is now B6PacBoy - GhostCDB (in-game - BBs)

An astounding 25% of this weeks duels didn't happen.  This is a huge dissapointment to me and probably also to those who were scheduled for one of these matches and were trying to make it happen.

These were the duels that didn't happen.  I'm going to give an extension on each of these until 6:00 PM Tuesday after which the indicated player will advance by forfeit for the reason stated if the duels don't happen:

Flench
F4U-1D
TnDep - Numerous posts.

akELFY
Seafire Mk II
Doomsday

Both players have posted.  akELFY asked for an extension until Wednesday which I will grant (Wednesday by 6:00 PM) after which Doomsday will advance.

JB11
C.202
DadRabit - Posted but not by the deadline.  Will advance if no posts by JB11, otherwise this will be a random draw if JB11 posts.

Sandwich
Yak-9T
Manurin - Sandwich missed his duel but I will allow another chance after which Manurin will advance.

Sukov - Posted but not by the deadline.  Will advance if no posts by Mike254, otherwise this will be a random draw if Mike254 posts.
Bf 109G-6
Mike254

batfinkv - Numerous posts.
A6M2
Blue

SEraider
Bf 109G-2
AApache

No posts by either player.  If one posts they will advance.  If both post there will be a random draw.

B6PacBoy
Spitfire Mk XIV
Changeup - Numerous posts.

Well, that really puts a burdon on each of these duels next opponents.  For many reasons, and for the balancxe of the tournament all deadlines are moved forward 6 hours.  This means you have until 6:00 PM CDT Sunday to complete each weeks duels and all dispute resolution deadlines move forward accordingly.  I hope this helps everyone by giving them more of the weekend to get their duels in.

We had two disputes this week.  The first was resolved quickly, and I believe correctly, by the review committee in the matter of BaldEagl vs MORTIS.  Details are in this thread if you're interested.

The second is a disputed result between mir and Syko because Syko, the alleged loser, didn't post the result.  I've got links to the films which I'll forward to the review committee as soon as I'm done posting this.  Sorry Grizz, you'll have to wait until the review committee confirms mir's win.

For all unresolved duels I will post next matchup plane assignments each evening as they are resolved.

I think that's it for news.  Without further ado, here's the updated bracket:

I don't know if you checked your PM's, but I'm having a computer hardware problem.  My cousin is going to try and help me out with a workaround this weekend.  Would it be possible to get a two day extension (Tuesday) on the next round?  If this does not work for my opponent (or you), I'll forfeit.

Thanks,

<S> madda with a better merge he is toast-gl changeup

I do need a lot of work on my merges I think.  He won the first fight from the merge, he just outmerged me and I wasn't able to get it back.  The other fights were close and hard fought, in the Brewster round we got in this little side canyon and it was crazy.  I had to get out of there, but never recovered from the break, couldn't get enough seperation and once again got out merged.  They were really great fights though and I had a great time chatting with changeup.

Well, there's always the next tournament, maybe I'll do a bit better there.  I've just got to get some more work in and get better between now and then.  Luckily the work is fun!

Title: Re: Fourth Tri-Annual Dueling Bracket & Results
Post by: BaldEagl on June 13, 2010, 08:52:44 PM
This week went much better.

We had two forfeits.  They were AApache whom no one has heard from since this tournament began and Vudak who's having computer problems and has withdrawn from the tournament.

Since this is the second tournament (and third round) that AApache has not been heard from after being signed up by one of his squad mates I'm considering options to keep problems like this from happening in future tournaments.  Options might include that a player has to sign up personally, or that a "problem" player is disallowed from participation in one or more tournaments or both.  I'll consider these options before the start of the next tourney.

We also had one instance where I could have allowed an extension but decided not to because flatiron clearly posted by the deadline for posting while BlitzVI did not.  Therefore flatiron advances by technical forfeit.  Furthermore, this is also the second tournament in a row where BlitzVI has not responded to requests to set up a duel.

Other than that I think this week went well.  Those who get through this week with a win will enter the quarterfinal round where we move to best of five with modified plane selection rules.  Good luck to all.

DrBone...be very wary of Waystin...he has ordered a full cockpit setup from General Dynamics including hydraulics.  The garage installation has been ongoing since Sat night but the delay is because his wife keeps needing in the garage freezer and the guys can't set up the satcom device that Waystin will use to connect with Fighter Weapons School at Miramar for "real time" tactical feeds on his next move with you.

Oops.  Almost forgot to do this tonight.

Since I don't have time to dredge through all the posts to see who did and didn't post I'm giving a 48 hour extension to:

Lazer
A6M5b
akELFY

You have until 6:00 PM Tuesday.  If it doesn't happen by then I'll figure out who advances Tuesday evening and quote the rule when I authorize the next match-up.

Congrats to the rest who made the quarter finals.

From here on it's best of five.  Plane selection rules are as follows:

The player who is behind in the series chooses the next duel aircraft.  This means they could choose as many as three times consecutively to try to get back into contention (for instance they lose the first and second duels then win the third making it 1-2 and get to choose for the third time).  If the series becomes tied at any point then the loser of the last duel chooses.

While the loser of the series needs to post results as always, the winner must post the films of the duels.

Here's this weeks match-ups:

Long story short, I had a bye in the 1st round and I was waiting for Shiv/Junky to get a hold of me after their fight.  I check back and Apache was a random draw after I was listed as a bye.  I never was aware nor I was told via PM.  Oh well, that's the only way Apache could beat me anyways.

I wouldn't normally do this but SEraider PM'd me and since he posted here this was my response:

Neither of you officially forfeited.  There was a random draw.

The rules clearly state:

- If a duel cannot be arranged between two players each player will have a chance to post the circumstances in the Bracket and Results thread prior to the posting deadline.  If only one player posts and it is clear that they are making an attempt to arrange their duel then that player will advance, provided their post was at least 48 hours prior to the round closing deadline. If both players post and it is clear that the issue lies with only one player then the player not at fault will advance.  If it is unclear which player is at fault, if neither player posts, or if a single player posts inside the 48 hour window then a random draw will determine which player advances.

Since neither of you posted the random draw took precidence.

Furthermore, in the first post I clearly said:

"We have 58 players participating so that leaves six players with week one byes.  For this reason I will accept up to six more players as long as you sign up by midnight tonight.  Sign up in THIS thread.  I will accept the first six to sign up who will be randomly assigned to one of the unmatched players along with a randomly selected first duel aircraft.  I'll post these match-up updates in this thread."

It was therefore incumbant on you to check back to see if you had been matched to a late entry.

As to AApache <removed> not contacting you, it's a two way street to arrange your duels.

Beyond all of that, I was in the MA one night when I saw you say on 200 you had a bye.  That was corrected by both myself and another player on 200.

Obviously arranging a duel wasn't that important to you either as four weeks have passed since the opening round and you're just checking in now to see if you have a duel?  I'd say you're a little late.

I can only administer the bracket.  I can't force people to keep track of their place in it.

Well, the Tuesday 6:00 PM dealine is past and by rule akELFY advances due to his post on Friday morning, June 18th.  The rule governing this is:

- If a duel cannot be arranged between two players each player will have a chance to post the circumstances in the Bracket and Results thread prior to the posting deadline.  If only one player posts and it is clear that they are making an attempt to arrange their duel then that player will advance, provided their post was at least 48 hours prior to the round closing deadline. If both players post and it is clear that the issue lies with only one player then the player not at fault will advance.  If it is unclear which player is at fault, if neither player posts, or if a single player posts inside the 48 hour window then a random draw will determine which player advances.

ELFY's also PM'd me several times while trying to arrange the duel with Lazer but, while I consider PM's they aren't official.  The rule is set to allow the other participant reasonable notice and a chance to respond which isn't achieved by sending me a PM.  Not that I mind but the post here is the official notice.

So the following duel is set:

TnDep
Hurri Mk IID
akELFY

Are you absolutely sure you want to skip the chance to possibly advance another round?  IIRC making the semifinals would be the highest you've made it in one of these.  It's up to you.

Regardless, good luck at boot camp.

he said he was avail. after 6pm PST, i waited online for 4 hours, the only day I could do it.

I think seeing as TnDep is having computer issues, further time could have been alotted.  At least advance the guy that is going to win? lol

good luck I guess.

I think maybe you should look at the hours played, and maybe see who is more available.  Many of the hours played by me, were hours requested by him.  Dueling me is pretty much "I play enough, you'll find me if you try."   From what i understand he was pretty hard to schedule in a previous duel.

No offense to elfy, but grizz has a pretty easy run at the bracket now.

Have fun  :aok

Again:

- If a duel cannot be arranged between two players each player will have a chance to post the circumstances in the Bracket and Results thread prior to the posting deadline.  If only one player posts and it is clear that they are making an attempt to arrange their duel then that player will advance, provided their post was at least 48 hours prior to the round closing deadline. These rules are in place specifically to avoid this type of problem in order to keep the tournament moving along smoothly.  You had every opportunity to post in this thread by the deadline to try to arrange your duels just as akELFY did.  Had you done so and didn't get the duel in then you may have advanced by random draw.  More likely had both of you been making an effort the duels would have happened within those 48 hours.

While I've been, IMO, very accomodating with the 48 hour extensions I'm generally unwilling to go beyond that except in rare instances because that limits the next duels to only 3-4 days to be arranged and fought.  I then have to extend those duels at the same time.  Now one or two players are affecting two weeks and two more players (the next duel and the one after that).

Sorry but I have to draw a line in the sand somewhere and that's why these rules are in place.  I've asked repeatedly for everyone to read and understand them.

Bosco,

Thanks for the fights and keep your head down...two things...when the DI's preceed any statement with "I strongly suggest.." or "You will see this material again.." perform the suggestion or write it down.  Second, it is a head game...keep your body and your wits about you because their job is to find your weakspot, no matter what it is, and exploit it...its not personal, its business.

One last thing...please tell your mother that Uncle Changeup is very appreciative of her that mothers in this great nation are still producing son's like you.  Keep us posted on your progress and graduate honors...it will help you punch your ticket...it follows you everywhere.  Godspeed my friend...

was 2 to 2 ( i forget the planes) then :
109f- tndep
tndep wins <S> wtg sir, fun fights ,srry aboot the lame auger :salute
elfy

Well I tell ya elfy when I turned with ya you owned me sir! I had to play the E game kinda lame, nice flying!

First random plane
Hurr2D - Was a fun fight we fought all the way to the deck I pulled this win out
http://www.mediafire.com/?mkq1z3fnwy2
AkElfy picks f4u-1
I had E adv. and pulled down for shot and it went bad from there Elfy pulled out a great victory tied up 1 to 1
http://www.mediafire.com/?njuyvow1oyq
I pick 190A5
Akelfy quickly gets me off my game in this one and tears me up in the reversals 1-2 I'm feeling the pressure lost in my plane
http://www.mediafire.com/?zomjtwjjdtm
I pick f4u-1a
Went for the E merge and took my time nothing worth watching just trying to get a win I got it 2-2
http://www.mediafire.com/?w0lqwnymamz
Elfy picks 109f4
Again I go for the E merge and I work elfy down to the deck and I think he hits a tree when I went for a shot
http://www.mediafire.com/?mnvzozy3tyz

I win the match 3-2 but it wasnt nothing special hats off to AkElfy you flew well bud  :salute

Wtg Dep!! Eagles all the way !!  :rock
Ty DB gl in your match Sir!

I'm glad to see all the duels were completed rather than having to allow extensions.  Congratulations to our semifinalists.

I don't really have anything to say this week other that we remain with the best of five format, the loser needs to post results and the winner needs to post the films.

So here's the updated bracket:

I gotta go with TJ on this one...although I agree completely with Batfink....too close to call.  Its unfortunate that these guys are so good that they will only get 1 mistake in each fight.  You guys should empty the cannons and just go with 50's!  Then you can make two mistakes in each fight! lol....good luck men.

Grizz, practice runs?....practicing what......what do you need practice with/for.........ya friggin live here (just like me).

Just pokin ya homey, and I surely hope the last match can accommodate either pilots schedule, as was said, you aren't holding anyone else up after all.

This is where I wish the game had a huge blimp that we could all get in to watch the fight.  Dibs on the outside (beergarden) observation deck if it does.

When they bring back H2H in the future maybe something like that will be possible, would definently be nice  ;)

Joey,

Choosing your opponents favourite ride after losing is ludicrously bold. You sure as hell wasn't lying to me when you said " I'm confident in my ability with the 109K4". After watching those fights you sure as hell wasn't lying! :o

Joey,

Choosing your opponents favourite ride after losing is ridiculously bold. You sure as hell wasn't lying to me when you said " I'm confident in my ability with the 109K4". After watching those fights you sure as hell wasn't lying! :o

Even after losing the 4th fight in the K4, I too was confident that I was going to win.  It was an easy choice to pick the 109K4 for the deciding fight and I wasted no time calling it out on 200.  The fight developed in almost identical fashion as it had in the 4th fight and I had put myself in an even more favorable position in this one.  I worked my angles to the best of my ability to the point where I thought I had it.  To the point where I thought to myself, "It's about to be over."  I came down to finish him off and the gun solution simply wasn't there.  He had worked his plane into the perfect spot, slow and stalling.  His foresight to know where to put his aircraft and avoid my advantaged attack at least 5 seconds in advance was incredible.  And just like that, the fight turned.  I had just a tad more E, which is the worst spot you can be in in a rolling scissor.  Not enough energy to E fight him, but not slow enough to risk getting slower in an attempt to get on the bottom half of the rolling scissor.  I questionably opted for an 'all the marbles' E maneuver, but in hindsight, didn't quite bait him laterally against the torque long enough before bringing it vertical before planning a torque stall, down upon his struggling aircraft.  He simply kept his nose up, got his piper right on me, and ended it before anything of significance could develop.

I'm glad the title of this tournament was decided by an epic 5th round, and a fight that I can say I have no regrets about.  I would fight it the exact same way if given another opportunity.  It took incredible effort, guts, poise, and above all, skill, to come back and win this one.  A much deserved victory by TonyJoey, and once again proving that he is one of the best pilots in Aces High.

109K4: http://www.mediafire.com/?nmgzmezdmwl2tim (http://www.mediafire.com/?nmgzmezdmwl2tim)

109K4: http://www.mediafire.com/?ko0wutrednnz0md (http://www.mediafire.com/?ko0wutrednnz0md)

That 4th and 5th fight were almost identical, except I lucked out of your guns (I honestly thought you had me there), and the E difference was the killer. It's almost impossible to convert such a minute E adv. in to a win. Like you said, the worst possible situation in scissors.

That was just one of those any-given Sunday duels, where I barely snuck by. It was definiteley a pleasure to fight you. A big return :salute to a great stick and sport.

I haven't gotten to see the films yet and probably won't until this weekend but wanted to throw out a congrats to TonyJoey.  Interesting choice of the K4 in round 4 down 2:1 and having lost in it in round 2.  Those are cajones.

It might be the weekend before I get the final bracket posted too but I'll try to get to that sooner if I can.  TJ... don't forget to print that out.  You can show off those big cajones to some hot WAC.   :D

I'm curious what the quarterfinalists thought of the 5 round duels and the somewhat unusual choice rules.

I had a couple of minutes this morning so here's the final bracket.  Congrats again to TonyJoey:

The next tournament sign-ups will begin around September 12th and run for two weeks.  That will, as always, allow us to complete the fall tournament prior to the Thanksgiving holiday.

I'd like to see more participation in that one... spread the word about the tournament between now and then.

Until then...

I don't think the tournament could have went any better then it did, the new rules best of 5 was nice to see.  Had to be a rules official on one duel as they were not aware of the new rules and wanted to quit after 3  :P

I'll have to set the next one out more then likely we'll see how life turns out.  If so I would like to be a board member on the BE chamber of commerce  :D

I agree that they were not nearly as tight as some merges, but that is due largely to the fact that the fights are at 10k. Diving to get below your opponent on the merge is part of dueling strategy, so on these duels, after diving we're going so fast it's impossible to pull a very tight merge. As I've said before I think the rules shuld be changed to where the fights happen at 23/24. on the deck.

I am referring to the "fly by at close range, pass each other then bank around"  that would have happened on the deck just the same.

I see most every one does this "type" of merge, and in my eyes it is not a proper merge, you are not setting up the merge, for a kill, while denying the shot opportunity for your nme,  which is what we are supposed to be doing.

those who love to fight try to avoid the HO, with the merge that most use in the DA,(such as the ones used in these fights) in the Mains they would be HO'd every time, to set up the merge for a gun solution and denying a gun solution for our nme is what we should do on the merge.

I also think diving down below the nme during a duel is not always the best thing to do.

hope I made it easier to understand.

I am not down playing your fights by any means, don't take it that way, see...I have a little problem, I speak my mind, but I am not always good at formulating what I wish to say.

I think similarly.  There are lots of options besides diving to gain speed then work up into some type of immelman or double immelman.

What about going up at the con range and breaking the 10k ceiling?  Is that legal in these duels, or does the first pass have to be at 10k or below?  It certainly opens up more possibilities.

One thing I saw in each of the last 2 fights was that Grizz had front quarter/cockpit shots before the 2nd immelman.  He chose not to take them, but those were definitely there as he had a slight bit of alt and an angle for the shot.

It was very nice flying in those 109K's.  I don't know how you guys enjoy those rides.  You sure did make it look easy.   :)

If someone stays at 10k on the merge, while the opponent drops down to say 8.5k, he will have a big advangtage. ANything you can do, he can cut inside. He will also have more speed to manuever with. While technically you would end up higher than him if yow went staright into the vertical, he would be right behind you for a kill shot.

I know Tony would not take that shot, so it was easy to hold guns there, even with the tourny on the line.  I knew I had an ever so slight edge on both of those immels in fights 4 and 5, but not enough to sully a good fight that I thought I could still win in my #1 ride.

sorry Grizz and TJ if you got offended.

No offense taken because you are wrong.   :)

No matter what you do to try to angle off the bad guy, all he has to do is point his nose at your "hook around" merge and it's the same as the original situation of going nose on nose.  No matter what you do to create some sort of offset entrance angle, it is simply nullified by the bad guy pointing his nose at you.  If you continue to try to avoid the nose on nose merge and fly by with lateral separation, he will have an angles advantage, as his nose will be pointed at the side of your aircraft as it passes.  He now only has to turn around 150 degrees to get his nose around to you whereas you have to turn it around 180 degrees.  Textbook merge in aces high is a nose on nose merge slightly below your enemy (if possible) and enough lateral separation to avoid a head on shot.

If you do not believe me we could film some merges in the DA, you doing that and then turning on tracking in the film viewer to show that all you are doing is burning E and not actually advancing your angular position.

Yeah, the opponent who dives down to 8.5k is going to have a lot more speed to work with in that situation.  But of course, I'm not talking about just going up and showing the 6.  I was talking more along the lines of going up then working a merge from a higher position (so alt vs speed in terms of E states).

I've only been back for a year now, after being away from this stuff (AH, AW) for 10 years, so I'm going by memory of things that I did way back when I was good at this. :)

It seems that the final fights of these tournaments end up in slow-ish rolling scissors after the merge.

This is sportsmanship at it's finest gentlemen. To have a shot on 2 different occasions and not take them because he felt they were not "clean" shots, (with the championship on the line), speaks volumes to Grizzs' character and sense of fair play. I <SALUTE> you sir.  :salute

If you do not believe me we could film some merges in the DA, you doing that and then turning on tracking in the film viewer to show that all you are doing is burning E and not actually advancing your angular position.

well lets just say I wont continue this convo here :D

Actually the diving DA merge works well in the MA to avoid a HO.  I'll talk about this in terms of both the MA and DA to point out some similarities and differences.

When you dive under your opponent you gain speed (In the MA this forces your opponent to go neg G's to keep his nose on you... a difficult shot to track).  In both the MA and the DA, once you're under and the distance/timing is right (just before the merge) you want to nose up toward your opponent (not a true nose to nose) forcing a high deflection angle slightly below his nose.  This is almost impossible for a HOer to hit in the MA.  In either case you're now bleeding speed while your opponent is nose down gaining speed.  If he tries to track the shot he's also bleeding E.

Quick quiz:  Who do you think will get over the top of an immelman first after this and who will have the tighter turn over the top?  Correct, the guy who dove under partly because he's already losing speed and partly because he's already started on the immel while the other guy is still nose down.

Not only will he get over the top sooner but, now with less speed, he'll be able to go over the top, nose down then nose back up at the faster opponent coming over.  This gains angles for the second time in the same move.

Note that the E states haven't significantly changed.  The guy who dove under is managing his E better to gain angles.

Since I started using this merge in the MA I haven't been HO'd and I've been able to aquire peoples sixes a lot faster than I used to.

Grizz is right, you can't win an angles fight with lateral seperation in a similar plane match-up.  There's no way to convert speed to angles without giving up E if you don't use the vertical and if you're the guy coming down you've already lost twice the vertical angle of the merge.

That's why all the top duelers use this merge.

[EDIT]  Of course, I always lose in the first round.

Another important factor with stick like grizz or joey. Sticks who practice this often will often be more dangerous from a slight E disadvantage than a slight E advantage. They both knew the other was savvy to counter attacks and thus both knew the danger of being slightly too fast to turn but not fast enough in a rope. At this level of competition no body wants to be the one popped essentially running vertically.

As I've said before I think the rules shuld be changed to where the fights happen at 23/24. on the deck.

With all due respect TJ, I am not in favor of this as a potential change to the duel bracket.

BE: I agree with what you're saying in that scenario.  I wasn't thinking of immelmans though, because yes, the plane coming up from underneath will have an advantage for several reasons, some that you've stated.

It was always pretty easy to use a higher cons greater E state against him if he was diving past me in a merge.  Is that what you're referring to in the type of nose up/nose down merge you mentioned?

What I typed didn't express what I was thinking, but I was thinking the higher plane dives down towards the merge and does something other than an straight immelman.

Try that w/ someone that knows what they are doing.

What I don't think you are understanding is that you are trading position for a slight E advantage.

The E advantage we are talking about is (usually) not enough to put you out of your opponents gun range.

In a dissimilar plane match up like you find in the LW you can do what you are talking about especially if you are flying to your planes strengths.

In a duel it'll get you dead more times than not.

BTW Kudos to TJ.

I understand Lute, but I don't think I'm conveying my thoughts well here.

Can you explain what you're envisioning from my posts, so I can better state what I mean?  What I'm missing is how I'm trying to be out of gun range - does it sound like I'm talking about using the alt to fight from the top down?

Thanks.

From what I am to understand, you are talking about not diving down w/ your opponent, keeping your alt, and merging down on to your opponent.

I can't really think of a good reason to do a merge like this, and quite a few reasons not to.

My best advice is to grab a Trainer, or a good "stick" who knows what's what and try it out.

The only reason to do what you suggested (that I could think of) would be to try and create and energy imbalance and E fight your opponent.

As they come up you nose down, maybe give them a shot and try to get them to bleed Energy, and then nose back up again and try to get position on them because they blew their advantage going for that shot.

That works in the LW, but vs. a decent duelist you gonna die.

From a positional perspective the lower pilot has more options if you decide to mix it up like that.  If they fly smart and don't do anything "stupid" they should hold most all the cards in the fight.

ETA:  (Response was to Lute, before the pic)

Ok, yeah, something like that, though I was thinking that at vis range, one would gain alt while the opponent was diving, so the vertical separation before the merge could eventually reach between 4k or 5k.

I don't know what the speed difference would be though.  Would the lower plane have so much more speed that it negates such a large difference in altitude?  Or would it be close enough to where the higher plane could gain an advantage?

I'd like to try this and see if somebody is willing.  I don't pantomime moves anymore like I did in the 90's, when I was addicted to AW, but this is still fun to figure out. :)

TonyJoey,

I agree with your pics.  Easy to see.

Without assumptions of plane type, speed at vis, what about this (assume the plane on the right may level a tad too, though the picture doesn't show it):

This is what I was trying to describe.

You will not get 4-5k vert. separation because as soon as you opponent sees you are climbing they will stop diving.

The reason players dive during the merge in a duel is because whomever is lower has a positional advantage.  By both diving to the deck and merging neither player has the advantage of position by being lower.  It is about position not Energy.

As soon as you opponent saw you climbing they would stop diving, as they are lower and have the advantage of position.
(you gave it to them)

The most you would get is 1-2k vert. separation (if that) and your opponent will start the fight in the drivers seat with more options.

Bottom line is by climbing like that you are giving your opponent a huge advantage in position and gaining only some stored/potential Energy.

(Edit: I might add you don't gain enough stored Energy to be out of a gun solution by your opponent.  They can close within' 4-600' and shoot ya')

(Edit:Edit: Yeah, I beat my typing teachers personal best in 8th grade w/ 90wpm and zero mistake.  Heck, I didn't use Vox for years in AH because I can type so fast I almost didn't need it)

I've been able to make a situation like that work Mir (in the MA) but I think vs anyone with even a basic understanding of ACM in a duel environment you would tip your hat so early that the opponent would cut his dive short and zoom up a bit in a shallow climb to maintain less vertical separation, and you'd be right back to the situation TJ illustrated.

*edit*

Lute types faster than I do. :)

I've never understood the reasoning behind having the duels in the canyon.

1.  For those unfamiliar with the DA it's the easiest place to find.
2.  There are more canyon fields than any other section of the map so if the DA is busy there's always an open set of fields.
3.  Variety of terrain
4.  Players can drag the fights out over the flats if they choose to.

If the merge is 10k I like the canyon area the longer fights you get to drag down in the canyon and it's fun

Even though I die before I ever get low enough to get into the canyons, would prefer to leave the fights as is (10k over the canyons). To me it not only allows the fight room to maneuver in the vertical (descending and ascending) but it also for a decent test of SA (getting too close to cliffs even though your not near the bottom yet).

Honestly I never really liked dueling on the deck and if the rules were changed to this then I would most likely not return for the next one. Not that anyone really minds if the bracket lost one more player but like I said I don't really like dueling on the deck.

dueling on the deck vs 10k is really not much difference besides of the speed difference on the high alt merge.  Both players are pretty much the same speed and alt. at the time the merge happens so it's a fair fight from there.

except the fact that you have 10k of altitude to work with versus less than 100 feet, leaving more options available.  yes tactics are pretty much the same though.

I would say there is a huge difference between fighting on the deck and at 10K, on the deck you have only a couple options, at 10K the options are not restricted at all, excepting of course the rules of engagement.
I am much more deadly at 10K then the deck, it gives you so much more room to maneuver and to nullify your opponents opening moves.

In the Brewster round against Changeup we got down inside a side branch of the canyon in a tight tight flat circle turning fight by the end of it.  I decided it was too dangerous and took the exit when I came around to it, back into the main part of the canyon.  He followed, and I never got back out from in front of him again really.  It was a super fun fight, and the canyon part of it was really intense and memorable to me.  I like dueling on the deck for fun, but I really enjoy having the fights at the canyon for the tourney.  It adds an entire dimension to the fight IMO.

At the beginning of the fight the deck has the same options as a 10k fight before against a better stick the last thing you want to do is keep giving up precious E.

In my tournament duel against Grizz I did work up a E advantage on him and he ended up winning the fight with some great shots so there is some exceptions to this rule but for the most part you can do anything on the deck you can do at 10k - only thing I can see the difference at is after your opponent goes up and you feel like if you went up he'd have a shot to you dive to extend for a sec to pull around for another merge.

I approach a 10k merge and a deck merge very differently. I can think of some major differences between the two. Higher merge speeds at 10k, and no ground to limit options, and the ability to merge with larger amounts of vertical separation.

In a 10k duel you have plenty of room to dive and will usually merge at a faster speed than in a deck merge. Most of these 10k fights I've been in had both pilots going for the E fight right off the merge. I'd imagine that would be partly attributed to wanting to fly a safe merge for the tournament, but mostly to having tons of speed on the merge. I know if I merge at 430mph, I'm not going to open up with a flat turn.

I see, and do, a lot more angle fighting during deck merges. You merge closer to corner speed and have less space to play in. If I can gain a good amount of angles on the merge, or shortly after, the enemy has less speed and altitude to attempt and reverse the fight.

The majority of the 10k fights I've been in were decided by a long, descending, one circle fight from the top of our immelmanns down to the deck. Both pilots vying for the best turn rate. Whoever was more familiar with riding the best turn rate would be the victor. In a deck merge you don't usually have the altitude to stay in that turn long enough to gain enough angles from it. It will more likely result in a lufbery.

One of the fights from the last tourney had my opponent in a very steep dive before the merge intent on merging below me. I kept just low enough to keep him in the dive but high enough to not lose a ton of E trying to get under him. I was over 2k above him when we merged and had secured the E advantage before the fight had even begun. This never could have happened in a deck merge.

They're different. :)

I like the 10k canyon merge, it makes the fights seem different from the everyday dueling. Plus as mentioned by others it gives the fighters more options on the merge and in the fight. One of the best fight's I've had in the tourny was vs Cactus in p38s. We went at it for nearly ten minutes before I augered, Cactus was clearly the better P38 driver but with 10k to play with I was able to put up a difficult fight. That fight would have lasted much less time if Cactus had had me on the deck from the start. So I believe to some extent it also allows people a chance to give more of a fight in a plane they are not as good in.
