been looking forward to this boss.  it's getting pretty stupid with the bb's "discuss" stuff.  plus us fighting each other over a stupid reason.  I bet the majority of ah players are grown men over 30 and yet we act like like bullies in the playground.  I guess we all deserve a time out to get back to business.

As a frequent victim of said personal (and often crude :huh) attacks :cry, I say wash their potty mouths out with soap!

Can one not admire the skills of the best fighter pilots (and tankers) without having their own good name dragged through the mud?  :headscratch: Can we not be gentlemen who demonstrate peace, love, and understanding? :)

Its not just this BBS or this game.  Its all MMO type games across the entire internet.  Any time more than one person is involved in any sort of a discussion it almost always turns into arguments with flagrant insults and worse.

Some people just get such a kick out being ********.

Actually I think that if people didn't get upset about being ho'ed or just plain shot down after spending a half hour flying to the fight there would be something wrong.

IF you are going to do anything, close Freq. 200!!! I have been playing this game for about 1 and 1/2 years and have NEVER tuned to 200. I enjoy the game just fine! Most of the problems, as I am told by other squaddies, is the interaction between countries on 200. Shut it DOWN!

200 is a great channel. Yeah you have a few folks that get out of hand sometimes, but all in all it's just good fun. I want to interact with other players including the ones i'm fighting. Because of the 200 channel i have learned a lot about the game, WW2 history, computers....you name it. Made quite a few friends because of it too.
Just today i got to talking to a guy on another country that wanted some tips on flying and doing some duels in hopes he'll have a better game. Another new player just started a week ago needed some help getting into some bombing. He rode with me for 2 or 3 hours while I told him hold to work the radio, how to turn and line up on targets, calibrate the bomb sight, how to land etc etc. It all started by a simple question on 200.

On 200 you can find out who is flying where, who the best sticks are, how and what they're flying. Heck I like 200. I don't think I'd like the game near as much without it to be quite honest.

Yo HT, as the "leader" of this game and community, most of the blame lies on yourself for allowing such behaviour to manifest itself. You can have others moderate the arena or forums in your place, but *you* made this game, and thus people will generally respect your self over anyone else.

I have pointed out this general degredation of behaviour before to you, but I was banned for doing so, and you might claim it was the manner in which I did it, but given a choice over pointing out the obvious here, or via PM. It seemed best not to possibly diminish the standing of your techniques in public, but you leave those of us who wish for the better little choice other to let it rot or say it in the open, thus.

Let me point out how this came about, I know you got your own ideas; but these might be worthy observations:

- By allowing Control freaks and agenda pushers to control the main chat channel, by being able to report stuff *they* think is bad, you have allowed those who take life and this game too seriously to assert their collective control over the mainstream air of communication. Thus driving out those who genuinely have fun cussing at eachother and the general competetiveness, respect and banter that comes with it. Such banter and lack-of-seriousness is what makes a game genuinely lighthearted and *fun* and attracts the sort of people the game needs. Im talking about the people who really make a game, the core, the heart, that the rest of the archetypes around here *originate* from, not these branding control-freak sorts are those who have been playing too long or too hard for their own good and lack the perspective to see any other needs then their own. They have their place in the community too, but the balance has shifted in their favour because of this.

- By losing focus of your vision and giving in to whims of *new* planes via voting, even if its a symbolic gesture of sorts; you are overstreching your resources and ability to keep things consistant. By adding new planes you secure the fact that in the future they will need a model upgrade or some other upgrade, and by adding multitudes of types of a plane you require even greater work to make sure they are accurate, thus leaving the planeset with some that look like they are from 2003, and others from 20010. This makes people lose a sense that the game is evolving and thus starts a downward spiral of measured-up expectations vs actual game direction.

I could go on, but I think you get the gist.

Peace out.

In which case I am content with me, I guess, not perfect, but not a raging you know what either.  I don't behave differently in MMOs than I do in reality, though I definitely see the keyboard bravery come out in some people.

In reality we have all sorts of ways to build our reputation, but online all we have is our name and the behavior associated with it.

I am guilty of behaving like a child.

My first year or two on the forums, I flamed away. My epiphany came when I was ready to come to blows over a frickin' game.

It is a game. A fun, challenging game for sure, but it is just a game.  Personally, I have been trying to act my age, but I still occasionally get whiny.

We should all remember the golden rule: Hitech has the gold, so he rules.  OK, not that one. This one:

Treat others as you want them to treat you.

Half the people on this BBS don't even fly the game, or even have active subscriptions, I'd wager.  Most of the talk I see here anymore sounds eerily similar to a high school hallways between lunch and 4th period

Simple solution IMHO, no subscription to the game, no BBS!

It's not that difficult. If you criticize the person or squad it's a personal attack. If you criticize a playing style, opinion, philosophy, explanation, or dispute data then it's not a personal attack. If you make your point without naming players or squads you don't have to worry too much about crossing the line. If you feel you were subjectively misunderstood you can PM whoever moderated you for an explanation.

This is an important issue that a lot of people have trouble with. People confuse what they do with what they are. This is especially important when raising children so I'll use that as an example. When a child does something wrong some parents will tell the child that they are bad. The child learns to identify themselves as bad which obviously causes problems later on. Other parents will tell the child that what they did was bad and that good children don't do that. This let's the child identify themselves as good, and reinforces the idea that good children behave a certain way and don't do bad things.

Now if you think that's idiotic you may express that opinion, but if you want people to agree then you may have to explain why you have that opinion.

criticizing someone's play style isn't a personal attack in my opinion, personal insults and criticizing a player is a personal attack.

That being said, everyone's guilty of it - in which its mostly minor - I rarely have seen anyone go "LT" on someone else.

I understand your point and I agree with you to a point. But most players are adults and thus should be defined by their behavior. Sure people can change, but most are not 'learning' from their mistakes, here, they are just repeating them, over and over and over.

Is it okay to call vtards vtards?

I would say that is an attack, if i understand correctly from the following quote.

Bashing a squad is a personal attack.

bashing a playing style is not.

I.E. Squad X Your style sucks.

VS Squad x you suck because of how you play.

Some of the questions are good questions.  I asked about the squad issue because I never get attacked personally on the forum, but a few people will verbally attack my squad when they don't like what I have to say about something.

This is akin to watching a class of 5th graders try to nitpick rules... and about as effective.

HiTech is, as far as I can tell, attempting to maintain order and good sportsmanship while at the same time leaving wiggle room for... "robust dialogue".

Continuing to nitpick what is or is not a "personal attack", either because you are attempting to be SlyPaws The Anarchy Squirrel, or simply because you are obtuse is counterproductive.

Would you rather the admin staff resort to Ultra-Fascist CareBear mode where even mild ribbing receives a banhammer JUST in case it may have offended someone?

This isn't rocket surgery, this is the very drivelescent material your mother(s) hopefully drilled or attempting to drill into your forming grey matter at a young age:

1.  If you don't have something nice to say...

2.  Sticks and Stones will indeed break both windows and bones, but name calling will get you a spanking

3.  Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.  If you are soft up top, do unto others as the average person would have done unto them.

Or, or, or... keep poking the badger and see what happens.

This points out an interesting problem these days. To argue a persons idea, or call it foolish, stupid et,c isn't an attack on the person, just the idea. People need to learn the difference.

if I HiTech is stupid, that's a personal attack.

If I say HiTechs decision the hire Scuzzy is stupid, then that's attacking the idea, not the man. Well, I guess it does kinda attack Scuzzy.

It's Especially a personal attack if you don't spell Skuzzys name correctly. :O

I agree to a point... but to me, at least, it's like calling the Germans "krauts" or "gerries" or whatever... it's derogatory, yet begrudgingly honorific... since they are an effective squad and the only "named" source of frustration I have heard (though I have only been back for a bit).

If you HO people in Aces high, you may lose and get mad.

If you get mad, you tell your children that they are bad.

If you tell children they are bad, they will hang out with undesirables.

If your children hang out with undesirables, they will get married to undesirables.

If they get married to undesirables, you will have a grandchild with a dog collar.

Don't have a grandchild with a dog collar.

Don't HO people in Aces High.

Wait...  what was this thread about, again?   :headscratch:

Sadly human nature is to not self regulate personal conduct in anonymous circumstances unless there are demonstrations of Draconian instantanious personal consiquences. The poor conduct is a self rewarding behavior.

Mobs don't have to be a group of people at a physical location running amok feeding off each others bad behavior. They exist in Internet Blogs all over the planet because most blogs don't require your real name and home address to take part in the anonymous community. Blog Mobs self empower through habituation of self reward by using any pretext to run with an issue once a topic or community member has been targeted. Eventualy forcing the Blog moderators to act harshly engendering a passive aggressive victom reponse from the mob. Being a victom is another form of self rewarding behavior to stave off responsibilty for ones conduct.

A mob either burns itself out until the next opportunity to self reward, or a more powerful entity executes a few examples in view of the group reinstilling their appreciation for individual self preservation. If it's a periodicly repeated scenario by the more powerful entity, only self preservation is triggered, not any self enlightened moral lessons learned. There is a very real chance the same perpetrators with new followers will repeat the same conduct in the future after things have cooled down due to past experience with the powerful entity's responses.

Bad behavior is emotionaly cathartic because the self reward mechanism is addictive once indulged and gotten away with. It's akin to the thrill of engaging in a personal act with your mate while in a public place and not getting caught. If you do eventualy get caught it's cathartic to blame the policeman for catching you and not yourself for the bad conduct.

After all you were simply enjoying yourself and the cop butted in and passed judgement on your conduct.

Has nothing to do with impartiality. It just seems harsh to suspend an account for a first offense unless it was way overboard.

totally understand but it's getting old in the bb some attacking others over stupid thing.  this is a game and that's all and yet most threads end up with my father can beat up your father thing.  if the suspension kicks in for maybe a day or two then perhaps we can be back to being civilized, if not then bye bye.

I am saying this due to back when i joined I could get lots of help when needed.  not most threads end up in the "i know more than you, so you are wrong".  try posting a thread about which computer components would be better then compare to let's say 3 years ago when you would get 4 or 5 different  set ups.  now you are lucky if you get a couple of replies. and that is due to lots of people stopped posting due to personal attacks that were sooo stupid.  it isnt about being thick skinned or not, it's about you get tired of arguing over stupid points.  I can  post lots of threads that coulddda been helpful to lots of us but ended up in personal attacks just for stupid reasons.

it is time really to stop this bs and actually be more civilized to each other.  most of us are way over 18 but still act like bullies in the playground sometimes.  if we want to tact like kids then let's get treated like kids.  1, 2 or 3 day suspension for being stupid isnt kill anybody. and in the long run might actually help all of us.

The way I see it, when we flame on each other if it is here on the BB's or on 200channel in game we also drag htc down into the mud at the same time in a way. Since we are doing it in an arena created by them, they are somewhat responsible for what is going on in here so out of respect of the creators of the game we should try and behave as best we can while using their product.
Yes I know it's "just a game", but still.. It is a great game, the greatest there is around. Why risk ruining this fantastic game by childish behavior if it can be avoided by a second thought, and 'think before speak' mentality instead.
And yes, we are paying to be here. But you have to pay to rent a house too, that's not the same as you have the rights to burn it to the ground at will.. Just my humble opinion.  :salute

The smack talk goes all the way back to the original doom 'deathmatchs'. I remember reading about how John Romero was dishing it out way back when. Does anyone remember his ad for that game 'Diakatana'  once he left Id and created that mega disaster Ion Storm? I think it was something like "John Romero wants to make  you his b***h".

Granted it's HTC's house, but to make grand claims about human behavior may be a bit of a stretch. It would be more accurate to say that this 'on-line' culture was set in motion long before 'Aces High' and will probably continue long after AH.

AH is a game... games are supposed to be fun. Why get mad? Take a chill pill.... if someone upsets you just get over it.

Don't bother fighting with people online.... there is no point. If you're fighting with someone, you're not having fun. You should be here to have fun.

If you take the time to let things go and not hold grudges here, you'll find that you have more fun. I did.

If you're having a crap day and you can't stop that coming into your game... log off and do something else.

All of which culminated in a statement by HT at the 2003 convention that "you have to describe this to [him] because [he] doesn't play and doesn't know what you're talking about." :D
But, really, I wouldn't play a game I developed either. I'd probably be sick of looking at it, especially after releasing an expansion. :p

Actually on-topic, I've only ever been mod-edited once, and that was posting a screenshot of another player attacking me. So perhaps I'm a good child. Or...good enough. :noid

The beatings may commence with out warning very soon.

HiTech

Gonna go off on a limb here...

Perhaps he means quit with the "Player XXX HO'd me, look at this film see how bumb player XXX is"
Or, "ALL these people do is horde"
Or, "you fly an easy mode aircraft, and since I cant beat it you are a lamer"
Or, "OMG all you do is bomb tanks with your airplane you bomb****"
Or....and my favorite...."all you do is take your pick of a faster aircraft then mine, and then ACTUALLY use it to beat me...you...dweeb?"

If you subscribe to the above, you have stated that you totally understand how the game works...GO YOU!...and as a result..uh...why are you complaining?  You can pick whatever aircraft you want, and with a tiny amount of planning you can pick how you fight as well.

OK. I called up to HTC and got the inside skinny from one of the secretary's. Apparently a certain CEO/CFO/BOSS type person affiliated with the company, mind you I'm not naming any names here, has apparently been the victim of some boys school toiletry humor.
It seems two of the members of the company ( names rhyme with Gyro and fuzzy) interrupted this certain persons toilet session. According to my source they masked up to conceal their identity and kicked in the stall door, grabbed the victim, held him upside down and proceeded to give him a "Swirly". They then ran from the facility yelling  " Jokers Jokers and Vguys rule". This was apparently an effort to conceal their true identities and place the blame on innocent parties.

My source advised that this post was apparently made in error and was supposed to be an internal email for office staff. I think this type of pranking goes on quite a bit in this office from what my source told me.

O those silly guys and their little jokes......

I never told you this but I have to come clean with you now....I hate cats.  I hate stray cats, expensive cats, cats of any color, cute cats, kittens, rare cats, any cat, I hate.  I feel better now.  Thank you.

Same here.

Ailurophobia is a type of specific phobia: the persistent, irrational fear of cats. Fear leads to hatred and aggression whether in speech or conduct. BBS text is speech gents.

How many of you as boys and teens tortured and shot stray cats?

I knew guys who regulary burned stray cats, put them in bags and threw them in water. Or tried out their new BB, Pellet or 22cal gun on stray cats. Dogs kill people all over the world for many reasons. Unless you are talking Big Cats, the incidence of death related to domestic or even feral cats is very miniscule.

I've never been mauled by a domestic cat. I was attacked and nearly killed by a cattle dog when I was a child on my extended familes ranch in S.D. I love dogs as much as cats. The wife and I are planning to get either a Doodle or giant royal Poodles. The males average 100-125libs.

http://www.rubymtnkennels.com/program.htm

Or a Newfypoo: Half Newfoundland and Poodle mix. Up to a 150lb dog.

So whats your major malfunction gents?? Trying to get a BBS personal attack in by creating an instantaious coallition of Ailurophobiac's to cover your veiled personal attack?? It's OK to be intollerant and aggressive if you have a peer group to cover you ain't it gents??

Tollerance for me not Thee........................

I am not afraid of cats.   They usually end up being chased by our Redbone Coonhound, so it provides cheap entertainment.   But they shouldn't be chased in the first place, because the cat owners shouldn't be allowed to let the piles of dung run loose in the neighborhood.

Edit, I noticed you slipped the accusatory sentence.    I have never harmed nor tortured any cat, I just do not care for them.

Hitech could make it easy for himself by creating a new rule to take care of a whole world of your hurt causing his headach.

15- Slipping on the Bleeding Edge of the fire.

With that he would have the room to swing a bull by the tail in a china shop and not have to explain himself after the first warning. Most parents operate by this rule under other names. We should realy aplogise to Hitech and Skuzzy for forcing them to take the place of our parents while being guests on their forum. Some of us are parents or close to that state ourselves.

As if the current rules aren't as general as can possibly be.  Take for example Rule #4..

4- Flamebaiting, flaming, being abusing, being disrepectful, trolling, spamming or posting to incite or annoy is not allowed. If you cannot make a positive contribution to the thread, then just stay out of it.

"Flamebaiting", "being disrespectful", "spamming", "posting to incite  or annoy"?  Those are catch-all rules.  Any post that is slightly annoying in any way is a rule violation if someone reports it.  If the forum rules were followed to a tee, 90% of the posts would be See Rule #2's or Rule #4's.

It's really just a potential violation if someone reports it. Whoever is moderating that post has to agree that it's a violation and also that the poster deserves to be sanctioned. The difficulty in writing precise rules that fit every occasion is why we give discretion to the people who have the burden of enforcement.

A high percentage of the posts on here could be interpreted as rule violations, which was my point.  The rules are extremely vague.

"The beatings will continue until moral improves!"

Isnt that jumping the gun a bit?? Hitech has never said: "If I want your opinion I will beat it out of you!"

Once the moral drops through the floor becasue the Despot begins beating his followers and slaves for opinions. Then he has to utter "The beatings will continue until moral improves!" At this point all productivity has crashed to a halt and he's loosing valuble forced labor income due to irrational fear, apathey and depression. Contusions, broken bones, concussions...the usual kinds of incentives.

If you haven't broken their moral first they will simply ignore you if you utter the beatings will continue part. You have to give them something to look forward to. If you beat them all the time you might as well not attempt to get any work out of them. Comon didn't you get the memo to take the Marketing 101 for Despots seminar? There is a whole day at the seminar on how to brutalize followers and slaves to achive greater prophits in the short term crunch.

I don't know anymore....Despotism is a lost art.

Aww now Grizz. Billy Buckley could always get 5 or 6 with his eyes closed. I'm just a waanabe compaired to that commentator from Yale.

One liners like "The beatings will continue until moral improves." are so shallow, over used and boring commercialisations from demotivational sites. Sprucing it up with the imagery of being part of a Despot's Marketing seminar. Well it at least showed alot of thin skin in the game. Funny how with things like this you get laughs in sitcoms when the audience see's it as a joke on a cast member they have been setup to dislike. Yep contextualy very thin skin in the game for metaphor layered satire.

One mans droll is another man's hyper-verbosity.  Bustr's obsession with MBA vernacular is directly proportional to his perception of mundane, monosyllabic BBS responses on threads that are directly or indirectly attributable to HiTech.

You guys could at least stop showing yourselves as pure products of the internet age. Too many simile's to make even camp bathroom graffiti with more bark than the pot's smell. But, even our children know how to go piu, piu, piu. And the out come of those three simplistic words are most fought over by grown men on these boards than anything resembling the fathers of those children and their expectations of how their child would grow up.

Here's a hearty piu, piu, piu to you to, and a salute to fatherhood.

Bustr, don't be pretentious just because you prefer to paint turkeys with your hand instead of making gun shapes with them. At least the kids going piu piu are exploring combined media, (sound and form).  :neener:

One mans droll is another man's hyper-verbosity.  Bustr's obsession with MBA vernacular is directly proportional to his perception of mundane, monosyllabic BBS responses on threads that are directly or indirectly attributable to HiTech.

In other words, HiTech should never place a welcome mat near his six o'clock.

If the standards for the BBS were applied in game, I can see about 10 people instantly losing their accounts, the typical re-offenders when it comes to PM'ing or berating on vox.
Thus is one reason I alwayssssssssss film, it's one thing to cry cheats on 200, but to PM and berate someone because you suck is total different story.

I won't name the ones, but every player that played over a year probably ran into them a few times, assuming you kill them - the war on vox starts.

Heard someone say they got a "political warning" for talking about the current debt the U.S. has incurred.

So, someone is paying attention.

I mean, they clearly need to take a short class on basic economics and perhaps a similar class on politics (just the very basics, mind you) so they can tell the difference... but it is comforting to know that someone is keeping a watchful eye and cracking down on the drunken subversives on country channel!

Before you squelch on the roster, report.  If it happens enough/frequently, then attention will be given to that person by those who need to give it.

HTC:  The FORUM RULES are posted in public for all to see regarding Personal attacks of all kinds, on the forum, with a sticky, with no gray area and no ambiguity.

You know, it may be the perfect answer if HTC POSTED their OFFICIAL RULES, REGS, and POSITIONS for IN-GAME BEHAVIOR for every subscriber who plays in-game to see, learn, and follow.  It would also allow players to know what exactly does NOT constitute their position.  No gray area.  No ambiguity.  Please post the OFFICIAL HTC stance on the following:

"What Constitutes A Personal Attack?"

"What is The Difference Between A Personal Attack and Stating The TRUTH, Having Screenshots & Film To Back Up The Truth?"

"How Does A Player Properly Report A Personal Attack?"  (I E Requirements of screen shots or film)

"What Are The Repercussions (mute length in days, etc) of In-Game Personal Attack?"

"Are there Varying Degrees of Personal Attack as well as The Punishment Length's for Each?"

"What is the Difference between a Perceived Personal Attack and a Simple Exchange of Differing Ideals?"

"What Are HTC's recommendations for Avoiding Personal Attacks to Begin With?"

I want to see HTC's answer and policies to these personal attack issues, not forum members.

Since we are ALL (subscribers) expected to abide by HTC's rules in-game, it's only fair if they inform us as to exactly what those rules and expectations are.  This would solve the vast majortity of in-game problems with this issue.

MrGeezer: What you ask would not make any difference.

The people who wish to obey rules all ready know what behavior is expected of them.

The people who show abusive and rude behavior still will be problem children.

Hence nothing would really change except the problem children would now want to say, "But your rules didn't explicitly say xxxx"

I have always like the book title (this may be slightly off), All I need to know in life , I learned in kindergarten.

if in doubt about personal attacks you have 3 choices actually 4.

2 ignore
3  .report
4  .squelch

if you dont know what a personal attack is then for the record this is an attempt at one by sarcasm alone.  but seriously, saying you dont know what a personal attack is equals to saying you dont know what pron is.  you cannot explain it but you know it when you see it.

if ht was to post every single rule we had to follow then it would takes us months just to finish reading the first book.

like a wise man once said "just dont be a dick".  actually I think that is the only rule in the book.

MRI studies of brain activity are begining to support Hitech's simple assertion about kindergarden and his identification of his chronic problem children. Sadly most of the chronic problem children cannot keep themselves a secret or restrained for very long. They just need to share with everyone, all the time, as much as they can impose on everyone before getting clamped down on by the local Sister Mary Elephant yardstick swingers brigade.

After all these years Hitech must be up to a Titanium Bionc Light Saber Yard Stick. Or he's a pretty nice guy in general.

Rules don't always work so well ... Unless you're -THE- Lawyer ?

In the bad ole pre internet days, I was a fidonet sysop ... 1 million + members world wide ... We had two rules ...

1) - DO NOT BE OFFENSIVE ...

You can't play by those rules ... you're OUT. Amazing how well that worked.

In the bad old days when we broke our wrists playing tackle football in the local gravel covered vacant lot. Our parents were mortified if we walked through the neighborhood crying about it. Breaking the wrist was part of the game. Crying was something to be ashamed of. Your wrist heald. Your reputation didnt.

Now days crying is a book deal and a million dollar speaking tour on how to cry and get away with murder.

I liked it better back when you could legaly test your sword at cross roads. Man I'm old.......

I remember the phone system in San Antonio having rampant voice bleed over for domestic lines.

My sister and I used to pick up the phone just to listen to the bleed over when the parents weren't looking. It was when we walked into the living room one day and wanted to know why some guy wanted to lick a woman's cat that we got in trouble. We were in 2nd and 3rd grade and we had a cat. Who licks their cat? The two of us had cat box duty. We knew where cats go part of their day. Yeeech, blech, phooohy!! And we knew about hair balls first hand.........

I'm sure any of you with kids remember those days around 7-9 years old and how litteral littel minds are. Our mother almost fainted when we finished asking the question about cat licking. And our father for just an instant smiled with the humor before he lit our tiny kesters up.
